Ryan went through the tech trends of 2018 and also picked a few films and tv shows for your consideration:

Tech

The Phone Notch

Originated by the Essential Phone and popularised by the release of the iPhone X in 2017, in 2018 the notch became ubiquitous with many flagships and mid-range phones aping the trend and squeezing every last drop of real estate from their devices.

The Decline of Intel

AMD Upset the applecart back in 2017, with the launch of their Ryzen and Threadripper lines of CPU’s forcing Intel to throw cores left right and centre, and pulling their Coffee Lake generation forward to try and counter the threat. Since then, things have gone from bad to worse for them. Still struggling to move off their 14nm process, something they’ve been on since the Broadwell generation of CPUs. It will be interesting to see if and how Intel will be able to keep their monopoly going into 2019.

OLED Technology

OLED has actually been around since the late 80s, however this year it’s taken off a storm. Now manufacturing has caught up with screen sizes people want, expect this trend to continue well into 2019 with flexible and transparent screens becoming more and more the hottest trend in TVs and smartphones.

Film

Runner Up

Mission Impossible: Fallout is the sixth film in the long running franchise and the first one in the series to have a returning Director in Christopher McQuarrie.  A solid, rip-roaring action adventure with a well thought out script and solid action set pieces, exactly what you want from a spy-movie. Highly recommended.

Film of the Year

Was it ever going to be anything else? Avengers: Infinity War was the culmination off 10 years, 19 films, multiple TV series’ it was a visual spectacle. We’re all holding our breath from Endgame, but hats off to The Russos’ for knitting all those threads into a coherent plot which made us jump for joy and bite our nails in terror at the same time…

 

TV

Runner Up

 

Jumping from a videogame to the small screen. Netflix’s Castlvania has been a stunning series on Netflix, with two (short) seasons available now. Lush animation, solid story and stunning voice work from Richard Armitage, James Callis & Graham McTavish, it’s all to brief and leaves you wanting more.

Winner

Showing on Netflix in the UK and on TBS in the US, a surprisingly thought-provoking series with equal parts drama and comedy. Go – watch it now.
