Birmingham is gearing up for one of its biggest weekends of the year. ESL One Birmingham 2026 and DreamHack Birmingham 2026 prepare to take over the National Exhibition Centre from March 26–29.
Bringing together elite esports competition and a full-scale gaming festival under one roof, the four-day event is expected to attract thousands of fans, players, and creators from across the UK and beyond.
Birmingham Hosts the UK’s Premier Dota 2 Esports Event
At the centre of the weekend is ESL One, one of the most recognised circuits in competitive gaming. Taking place at BP Pulse Live Arena, this tournament will showcase 16 top international teams as they compete for a prize pool of $1,000,000. Teams will also earn points towards securing their position at The International in Shanghai later this year.
For the uninitiated, Dota 2 is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA). Played from a birds-eye perspective two teams of five face off against each other with the goal to destroy the “throne” in the centre of the opposing team’s base. Each player assumes a different hero who fulfils a certain role such as high damage, high durability or support. While Dota 2 isn’t the biggest MOBA, it remains one of the most competitive and enduring esports ecosystems in the world. The game still outperforms many AAA live-service games on PC being among the top 5 most played games on Steam.
What is Esports?
In a nutshell, esports is a form of competition using video games as the medium. Games tend to be online multiplayer games played head-to-head or in teams in organised tournaments, normally with a prize pool. Tournaments are normally watched by spectators both online and in person.
Esports has been around since the dawn of the video games, but it’s only really since the 2010s has the industry gained unprecedented momentum across the world. According to findings by Ukie, the UK esports sector supported £111.5m in Gross Value Added to the economy in 2019. This figure is considerably larger post-pandemic.
DreamHack Expands the Experience
Running alongside the tournament, DreamHack will bring its signature mix of gaming culture, community, and entertainment to the NEC. DreamHack is a Swedish ESL brand specialising in esports tournaments and other gaming conventions; at its core it’s a massive LAN Party and computer festival. Often described as a “digital festival,” DreamHack offers a broader experience beyond competitive play including:
- Large-scale LAN gaming areas
- Indie developer showcases
- Arcade area
- Cosplay competitions and community events
- Appearances from content creators and industry personalities like Sidemen and Bov Boys
The combination of DreamHack’s open, festival-style format with ESL One’s structured competition is expected to create a diverse and inclusive environment for visitors of all interests and experience levels.
Gaming and geek culture under one roof
While both ESL One and DreamHack are established in their own right, their co-location in Birmingham makes this an attractive and rare treat for gamers, geeks and esports fans alike with one ticket getting you access to everything on offer.
Competitive esports fans will have access to a broader festival experience, while casual attendees can engage with live esports in a more accessible setting. The result is expected to be a crossover event that reflects the evolving nature of gaming culture as both entertainment and community.
This is a big deal for Birmingham and UK Esports
The event comes amid continued growth in the UK’s esports sector, with increasing investment, audience engagement, and international visibility. Hosting global brands like ESL One and DreamHack further reinforces the UK’s position as an emerging hub for major gaming events.
Birmingham, in particular, has been gaining recognition as a destination for large-scale conventions, and this weekend is likely to strengthen that reputation with thousands of visitors expecting to visit the city adding to local trade and tourism.
Get ready for a memorable weekend
As the March 26–29 dates approach, anticipation continues to build among fans and organisers alike.
