The Geeky Brummie Pull List with Strange Adventures
It’s another four great books out this week and our pick of the week is Strange Adventures which reaches its half way point this month. Also out this week are the latest issues of Once and Future, Bill and Ted Are Doomed and the latest New Mutants is an X of Swords crossover. In Meanwhile… we take a look at some more comic related news stories.
Now on with the comics…

How determined is Mr. Terrific to find the truth? The answer becomes more challenging as the whole world starts to turn against him. Adam Strange is a hero who can save the Earth from alien invasion, and who is Mr. Terrific to say otherwise? The extent of the denial only makes the man more suspicious. Not that the warmongering Pykkts care one way or the other. If Strange is to be believed, they only have one thing on their minds: taking over the planet. Adam and his wife beat them back once before, and the key to doing it again is to dig into the past that Mr. Terrific is so hell-bent on destroying. Read the series IGN calls one of the most anticipated comics of the year!
Tom King can do no wrong right now. He seems to be DC’s go to guy and on the strength of this series I can understand why. He has a few other books out today one of which I’m sure is on a lot of peoples radar but I have to single out Strange Adventures. It’s great to see Adam Strange in action again and the art partnership of Gerads and Shaner is just perfect. The mix of real world and sci-fi action flows seamlessly and every issue is a joy to read. If you’ve not already picked this up I recommend you do.

The veil between the Otherworld and the human world is thin, and as the story changes around Duncan and Gran, each foe becomes harder to defeat… and predict. They may be holding the line, but enemies both new and old are closing in fast, and even Gran and Duncan may not be prepared for what’s next!
I can’t believe this is issue 12. Where have those months gone. I would like it if this book had twice as many pages each issue. There is so much going on and Gillen’s deep dive into British folklore is fascinating. Mora and Bonvillain work a special kind of magic on every page and this book is a delight to read, it’s so rich and full of texture. I highly recommend this comic.

The official prequel series to the upcoming film! Bill and Ted are making ridiculous plans for a world tour that will somehow solve all their problems. They also hope to write the one song while on tour, energized and influenced by the people of the excellent planet Earth. Their confidence returning, they help the overburdened princesses with arranging the bookings. Things take a turn though when Wyld Stallyns is accidentally booked for a deadly-serious Scandinavian death metal festival (because of Death being in their band).
This series takes me back. This book is just having so much fun filling in the blank between Bogus Journey and Face The Music. It’s lovely to see Rufus in action again and the book is filled with lots of little joyful moments. Whilst I’d have looked to see Dorkin take on the art as well, Roger Langridge is bringing his A Game to the book with a style that reminds me of the glory days of underground comix. I’m having a blast reading this and so should you.

X OF SWORDS PART 7. Diligence. Discipline. A sword of the self.
I’ve been enjoying this revival of the New Mutants. In this issue the book crosses over with the major X of Swords storyline. We get to see Warlock again and he appears to turn himself into a sword. I love Warlock and Doug so I have to know where this is going.
Brawler Goes At It Again
After a hugely successful first Kickstarter campaign, the ever wonderful Steve Tanner is at it again by bringing us the long awaited second issue of Brawler. This second issue of Brawler is a 56 page, perfect bound, full-colour anthology features eight comic strips from talented UK comic creators, including David Millgate, Ferg Handley, James Devlin, Pete Woods, Gary Crutchley, Matt Soffe, Katie Cunningham, Danielle Wiebe, Jorgen Karlsson, Hakan Aydin, Ichsan Ansori & more.
In 2019 Brawler #1 was published after a successful pre-order campaign here on Kickstarter, and was received enthusiastically by its readers. Taking inspiration from the 80’s Warrior anthology series, our first issue featured a mix of new and established characters from some truly talented writers and artists. With Brawler’s sensational second issue #2 the plan is to do that once again!
Inside Brawler #2 you’ll find a fine selection of strange tales and amazing stories from some first class comics creators, and a mixture of returning favourites from our first issue as well as some brand new characters for you to enjoy.
You can pick up Brawler #2 along with some fantastic rewards on the Brawler Kickstarter page – Brawler 2
Spacewarp Gets Real
Earlier this year the legendary Pat Mills launched Spacewarp – his own revival of the British anthology comic. Initially Spacewarp was only available digitally but now you can preorder a physical copy from Get My Comics.
Three options are available including a signed or personalised edition. You can preorder your copy by heading over the the Millsverse page of the Get My Comics Website – Millsverse
NYCC Goes Meta
Last weekend thanks to continuing pandemic restrictions New York Comic Con and MCM Comic Con went online through Metaverse. This virtual con gave fans access to a whole host of content through the Metaverse online hub. The pick of the crop for comic fans were the panels for Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K and Helstrom TV shows and our first look at Robert Kirkman’s Invincible animated adaptation.
It’s the Mental Mobile Mechanized Organism Designed Only for Killing like you’ve never seen him before in a Robot Chicken meets Modern Family animated Marvel series that is coming soon to Hulu. In these first look clips from the show (co-created by Jordan Blum and Patton Oswalt), we learn that M.O.D.O.K. (voiced by Oswalt) isn’t a very good businessman, husband, or father.
Check out the first 10 minutes of the first-ever Marvel series with a horror twist. Created by Paul Zbyszewski, the show centers around Daimon and Ana Helstrom (played by Tom Austen and Sydney Lemmon), two siblings that fight against supernatural forces. The sneak peek begins at 00:29 in the video above. Helstrom debuts on Hulu this coming Friday, Oct. 16
Robert Kirkman’s imagination is bleeding onto Amazon with Invincible, an animated adaptation of the Skybound comic book series of the same name. The Walking Dead‘s Steven Yeun leads the voice cast as Mark Grayson, the 17-year-old son of the planet’s strongest superhero (J.K. Simmons). As he comes into his own, Mark realizes that his father’s legacy is not as pristine as he once thought. Invincible flies onto Prime Video sometime next year.
And whilst not strictly comics related I had to post this teaser for one return of one of TV’s best animated shows of all time Animaniacs.
Yacko, Wacko, and Dot Warner are brought back from extinction in the first footage from Hulu’s upcoming Animaniacs reboot. It’s almost like that movie with the theme park full of cloned dinosaurs. What’s it called again? It’s on the top of our tongue…Animaniacs arrives on Hulu Friday, Nov. 20.
How and where we will get to see these show in the UK is still a mystery to me but I hope we’ll get to see them soon after our colonial cousins.
Save Hellblazer
I’d like to remind everyone how magnificent this series is and how we shouldn’t allow DC to cancel it with issue 12. Sign the #SaveHellblazer petition here – Persuade DC Comics to continue the John Constantine: Hellblazer series
I hope that recent events depicted in Justice League Dark don’t have any bearing on this situation.
