Hello! Welcome to the latest Geeky Brummie Games Release Roundup!
This week, golden idols, plastic robot dinosaurs and more Tetris than you know what to do with.
Re-Releases and Ports
Tetris Forever (PC, PlayStation, Switch, Xbox) is one of Digital Eclipse’s Gold Master collections, where you don’t just get to play the games, you get an extensive history of those games. Tetris Forever is, unsurprisingly, a collection of Tetris games from over the years, including a recreation of Alexey Pajitnov’s original version. Perfect for video game history nerds.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake (PC, PlayStation, Switch, Xbox) is, as the name suggests, a remake of Dragon Quest III in the “HD-2D” style used in games like Octopath Traveler. Perfect opportunity to discover one of the pioneering entries in the long-running Dragon Quest series.
New Releases
Everholm (PC) is a cosy RPG that may not be as cosy as it first appears. You play as Lilly, a girl looking for her lost sister who finds herself in the town of Everholm, a place where everyone seems to know her. You build a little homestead while also delving into dungeons to discover the secrets buried underneath the town.
Sorry We’re Closed (PC) is a survival horror game unlike any other. While standard tropes of the genre are here, the whole game is wrapped in a gaudy, campy visual style that creates a wholly unique world full of bizarre characters. You play as a woman trying to break a demonic curse by delving into the underworld and uncovering the secrets within.
Great God Grove (PC, Switch, Xbox X/S) is a game about helping bickering gods communicate again. You play as a guy with a speech vacuum who can take speech bubbles from characters and deliver them to others. Played this one for a review and it’s a lot of fun, with a lot of silly characters to interact with. Definitely worth a look.
Lego Horizon Adventures (PC, PS5, Switch) is a Lego-themed spin-off of Horizon Zero Dawn and…I’m going to be perfectly honest with you here, I don’t know who this is for. I own a Lego Tallneck so I should be the target audience, but I see little here that appeals to me. Maybe the children who really like the idea of robot dinosaurs. But hey, it continues Sony’s push to try and get a younger demographic back from Nintendo, so we’ll see how it does.
Game of the Week
Game of the Week is The Rise of the Golden Idol (PC, PlayStation, Switch, Xbox), the sequel to 2022’s The Case of the Golden Idol.
You all know I love a good mystery game, and The Case of the Golden Idol is up there as one of the best out there. If you never played the original, I highly recommend it, as you steadily uncover a series of gruesome plots surrounding a mysterious idol. Gameplay involved finding words within a scene and using them to piece together a description of what happened, and required a significant amount of deductive skill to get through.
The sequel promises more of what made the original so great. The setting has been moved forward in time to the 1970s, with the era’s politics playing a huge part in the mysteries. I am excited to play this one myself at some point, and from what I’m hearing it’s a huge step up from its already superb predecessor, which is just making me even more hype for it.
