Welcome to the latest edition of the Geeky Brummie Gaming Roundup, and it’s a bit of a shorter one this week. As Christmas approaches, we’re seeing fewer announcements and fewer releases, as you’d expect.
But we did have the Game Awards last week, so let’s take a look at some of the announcements from there.
OBSIDIAN REVEAL NEW RPG – THE OUTER WORLDS
The big announcement of the night was, of course, the new title from Obsidian Entertainment. You may know them from the likes of Pillars of Eternity or Fallout: New Vegas, and this new title looks to be following in their footsteps. The Outer Worlds is a sci-fi RPG set out in colonies in space. The Fallout connection is obvious from the trailer, but with a touch of Borderlands’ irreverent sense of humour thrown in for good measure. Essentially, it’s looking like the game people wish Fallout 76 was. Statements from the developers suggest this is very much a classic RPG in the vein of the developer’s previous titles. You play as an employee of an intergalactic mega-corporation, fighting for survival in a terraformed colony on an alien planet. All the elements you’d expect are here – first person combat similar to Fallout, a companions system and branching dialogue options, flaws and perks to customise your character, and a massive space colony to explore. And best of all, no microtransactions! The Outer Worlds is out next year, and a few of us on the Geeky Brummie team are very excited to play this.
SMASH BROS DLC ANNOUNCED
Another big announcement is the reveal of Nintendo’s first DLC character for Super Smash Bros Ultimate. We’ve known that there are five DLC characters on the way, with a bonus Piranha Plant, but we’ve not known who until now. The first DLC character is a surprising choice; it’s Joker, the protagonist of Persona 5. With Persona 5 being a PS4 exclusive, this wasn’t an expected character choice. However, judging from the responses on social media, it is a welcome one. As someone who loves both Smash Bros and Persona, this announcement has me very excited and I can’t wait to see how he plays in game. It also means Smash Bros is getting Persona music and that’s one of the best parts of this news.
OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS
There were a few other announcements at The Game Awards, but not a lot of details. Here’s a quick roundup:
- Marvel Ultimate Alliance returns after a ten-year absence, and the third game will be a Nintendo Switch exclusive
- Bioware have confirmed development of Dragon Age 4
- Just like Blood Dragon followed Far Cry 3 and Primal followed Far Cry 4, Far Cry 5 is getting its own side game, the Fallout-esque New Dawn, out in February
- As rumoured last week, there will definitely be a Crash Team Racing remake, out in June next year
- Transistor developers Supergiant have announced a roguelike dungeon crawler called Hades
- Ark developers Wildcard have announced a survival game with pirates and dragons called Atlas
- Microsoft announced that Ashen is out right now on Xbox One and PC
- Mortal Kombat 11 was revealed, and is set to arrive in March
- Psychonauts 2 got its first proper trailer, and it still seems amazing that a sequel is happening
SONIC MOVIE POSTER HAS BEEN REVEALED, HORRIFIES THE WORLD
Outside the Game Awards, there hasn’t been a lot of major news outside of general DLC announcements. However, we did get our first glimpse at the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie, and it’s horrifying. We’ve seen a couple of posters so far – a Sonic in silhouette and Sonic’s legs sitting on a bridge. What we have is a disturbingly muscular Sonic, with a massive head, and ominous news that the movie’s producers and Sega had arguments about how to handle “the eye decision”. This is the second animal-based live-action video game movie announced recently, but while Detective Pikachu mostly looked decent, things aren’t boding well for Sonic. And that’s everything for this week. Let us know what you think of the Game Awards announcements. Are you excited for The Outer Worlds? What are you most excited about from last week’s announcements? And are you as terrified by live-action Sonic as the rest of us? I’ll be back next with a roundup of 2018 in gaming for you all! See you then!
