New Comic Book Day with Dead Eyes.
Time to pick up some new comics from Worlds Apart Birmingham (formerly Nostalgia & Comics). These are Geeky Brummie’s picks of the comics available today from your local comic book store. This week my main picks are both indie books that I highly recommend – Dead Eyes from Image and Grendel: Devil’s Odyssey from Dark Horse.
Title: Dead Eyes
Publisher: Image Comics
Issue No.: 1
Creative Team: Gerry Duggan – Writer : John McCrea – Artist & Cover Artist
Late last year you may remember seeing a comic called Dead Rabbit. Due to reasons to complicated to go into here that title had to cease publishing. Now thankfully the wonderful creation of writer Gerry Duggan and local Birmingham artist John McCrea is back with a new name. The first couple of issues of Dead Eyes will be reprinting a reworked version of the original Dead Rabbit issues with all new material starting in issue 3. I really enjoyed this comic and I’m glad to see it back. The artwork is phenomenal and the story of a guy from the wrong side of the tracks returning after what he though was his last big score is a delicious slice of neo-noir. Don’t miss it.
From the Publisher:
“Set in the 1990s, “Dead Eyes” was a prolific stick-up man and hoodlum in Boston until he took down one last big score and disappeared. Nobody ever discovered the truth. He retired to be with the love of his life, but now he’s back in the mask to save her. No one—not his wife, the mafia, or the cops—is happy that he’s out of retirement.“
Title: Grendel: Devil’s Odyssey
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Issue No.: 1
Creative Team: Matt Wagner – Writer & Artist : Brennan Wagner – Colorist : Fabio Moon – Variant Cover Artist
Having recently finished Mage, Matt Wagner is back with his other legendary series – Grendel. I have been a fan of Grendel for a very long time and I’m looking forward to the latest iteration of the character as we take a trip into space this time. Matt’s art is beautiful and the colour work by his son Brennan compliment his artwork perfectly. If you’ve never heard of or seen a Grendel book then I highly recommend you add this title to your pull list today, you won’t be disappointed.
From the Publisher:
“Grendel Prime searches the stars for a new home for mankind, and Matt Wagner returns to his darkest creation! As civilization comes to an end on Earth, the final Grendel Khan gives Grendel Prime a new directive: Find a perfect planet to be the new home for the human race. But will the deadly and relentless paladin ultimately save humanity… or destroy it? * Grendel Prime continues the legacy in a space adventure! * Sci-fi, fantasy, and horror combine.“
Round Up
There are some other great books out today including Marvel Comics #1001 which contains a new Death’s Head story by his creator Simon Furman, House of X #6, DCeased #5, The Dreaming #14 and Doom Patrol: Weigh of the Worlds #4. All of these are well worth picking up if you haven’t already.
