New Comic Book Day with John Constantine: Hellblazer.
Time to pick up some new comics from Worlds Apart Birmingham (formerly Nostalgia & Comics). These are Geeky Brummie’s picks of the comics available today from your local comic book store.
Following hot on the heels of the recent one-shot John Constantine returns with a new regular series as part of the Sandman Universe. I also recommend a bunch of other great comics to discover this week and you can find them all in my roundup below.
If all of these great comics aren’t enough for you then why not bolster your reading list by checking out some of my previous choices in the videos at the bottom of the page.
Title: John Constantine: Hellblazer
Publisher: DC Black Label
Issue No.: 1
Creative Team: Simon Spurrier – Writer : Aaron Campbell – Artist : John Paul Leon – Cover Artist : Charlie Adlard – Variant Cover Artist
I’ve really enjoyed what Si Spurrier has been doing with The Dreaming so I can’t think of anyone better to bring old John back to comics. The recent one-shot proved that John can still cut it in the 21st Century and that also left me with enough questions to fill many future issues. That issue also made it quite clear why this book is being put out under the mature Black Label imprint – it certainly didn’t hold back and I hope that continues in this regular series. As it’s a fairly dark time to be living in the UK I’m hoping that John’s adventures will reference the world as we know it in a similar fashion to his Vertigo heydays. I’m really excited to see what happens with this title and I’m sure I will not disappointed.
From the Publisher:
“John Constantine is back in London, back to his old tricks — and just in time, as things have become very dark indeed in his old stomping grounds. A small-time gang lord has found himself dealing with a big-time outbreak of supernatural weirdness…and without any allies to call on and nothing left to call his own, John doesn’t have much choice about taking a paycheck from one of London’s worst, or accepting the help of one of the gang lord’s would-be foot soldiers. But what should be an open-and-shut exorcism turns out to be nothing but…and the author of this madness may just be getting started on their terrible masterpiece!
The original Constantine is back in this series from Si Spurrier (The Dreaming) and Aaron Campbell (Infidel), with nothing to his name but decades of bad memories and an unearned second chance. How, exactly, will he squander it? There’s only one way to find out…“
Round Up
This weeks round up features quite a few second issues and one significant finale. Every one of them is worth picking up. Kicking off this week we have the second issues of New Mutants #2, Fantastic Four: Grand Design #2 and Yondu #2 all from Marvel. At Ahoy Comics we have Second Coming #5 and finally we have the very last issue of Curse Words #25 – I’ve really enjoyed this series and whilst I’ll be sad to see it go I’m hoping this finale is a doozy.
