New Comic Book Day with Legion of Super-Heroes.
Time to pick up some new comics from Worlds Apart Birmingham (formerly Nostalgia & Comics). These are Geeky Brummie’s picks of the comics available today from your local comic book store.
After a few relatively quiet weeks this week has gone huge. There are so many great comics out today that I’ve done a double-sized round-up with 10 of the best comics you can buy. My overall pick of the week is the long awaited return of those 31st Century legends the Legion of Super-Heroes who return with a new 1st issue courtesy of Brian Michael Bendis and Ryan Sook.
If all of these great comics aren’t enough for you then why not bolster your reading list by checking out some of my previous choices in the videos at the bottom of the page.
Title: Legion of Super-Heroes
Publisher: DC Comics
Issue No.: 1
Creative Team: Brian Michael Bendis – Writer : Ryan Sook – Artist, Cover Artist &Variant Cover Artist : Jim Cheung – Variant Cover Artist
When Brian Michael Bendis moved to DC a while ago he had big things planned. So far he’s done a great job with Superman, started one of my favourite imprints with Wonder Comics, but that was just the beginning. All of this has been building to the one thing he really wanted to do – bring back the Legion of Super-Heroes. This comic could be one of the most ambitious mainstream comic books ever attempted as Bendis and artist Ryan Sook relaunch the Legion with stories anyone can pick up (the Legion has one of the most complex and convoluted back histories of any mainstream comic). The Legion comic were always a delight to read and I’m looking forward to a bright new future with these 31st Century legends.
From the Publisher:
“Welcome to the 31st century! Inspired by the acts of and lessons learned from the greatest heroes of all time, the Legion of Super-Heroes have gathered together to stop a galaxy from repeating its past mistakes. The greatest lineup of heroes in comic book history returns with new, fresh, and reader-friendly stories!
Eisner Award-winning writer Brian Michael Bendis reteams with master artist Ryan Sook (Action Comics) for one of the most ambitious mainstream comic books ever created! Why have the Legion of Super-Heroes broken the cardinal rule of the United Planets and inducted Jon Kent, a.k.a. Superboy, into the Legion? What are they hiding? And what does it have to do with Aquaman’s long-lost trident?“
Round Up
It’s a big week for comics this week with many great titles hitting the shelves. Local legend John McCrea has two books out this week – Dead Eyes #2 continues at Image whilst Marvel releases Yondu #1, this new mini-series sees John taking on one of the stand-out characters from Guardians of the Galaxy and from the previews I’ve seen looks to be a sure fire hit. Al Ewing and Joe Bennett reunite on The Immortal Hulk #26, one of the best comic books series out there right now. Marvel keep the Dawn of X titles coming and this week it is New Mutants #1 by Ed Brisson, Jonathan Hickman and Rod Reis. This comic brings together the classic team and packs them off into space and I’ve high hopes for this one. (X-Force is the other Dawn of X title out this week but I didn’t fancy that one much).
Brian Michael Bendis and Nick Derington are producing some of my favourite Dark Knight comics and this week sees the release of Batman: Universe #5. Simon Spurrier and Bilquis Evely start the final part of their adventures together in the Sandman Universe with The Dreaming #15 – a absolutely beautiful book and a must read title. And speaking of must read comics be sure to pick up Mark Russell and Stephen Byrne’s Wonder Twins #9 and see why this is likely to be my comic of the year. Becky Cloonan and Michael Conrad take over on Doom Patrol: Weight of the Worlds #5 which sees the return of the classic Morrison/Case character Dorothy Spinner! Mariko Tamaki and Gurihiru bring us the absolutely lovely looking Spider-Man/Venon: Double Trouble #1 – the previews of this have been astonishing! And finally Matt and Brennan Wagner continue Grendel: Devil’s Odyssey #2 – it’s great to be back in the world of the Grendel and this book looks amazing.
