New Comic Book Day with Second Coming.
Time to pick up some new comics from Worlds Apart Birmingham (formerly Nostalgia & Comics). These are Geeky Brummie’s picks of the comics available today from your local comic book store including Second Coming, Batman: Universe & Wonder Twins.
Title: Second Coming
Publisher: Ahoy Comics
Issue No.: 1
Creative Team: Mark Russell – Writer : Richard Pace – Artist & Cover Artist
Originally planned to be published via Vertigo at DC, Mark Russell’s Second Coming is now arriving via the little known in the UK Ahoy Comics. This book has garnered some controversy it doesn’t deserve and you may have trouble tracking it down. The basic premise of the book is Jesus Christ returns to Earth at the request of GOD as the roommate of the world’s mightiest superhero–a Superman analog who punches his way through life. Second Coming will look at us as a society, and how things like faith, love, peace, acceptance and forgiveness work in the 21st Century.
From the Publisher:
“Second Coming follows Jesus Christ as he returns to Earth and discovers that his teachings have been distorted. To rediscover his inner messiah, Jesus becomes roommates with humanity’s superhero savior, Sun-Man, the Last Son of Krispex.“
Title: Batman: Universe
Publisher: DC Comics
Issue No.: 1
Creative Team: Brian Michael Bendis – Writer : Nick Derington – Artist & Cover Artist : Dave Stewart – Colorist
The stories collected here were first published in comics only distributed in US Walmart stores. This is Brian Michael Bendis first work on Batman and here he is teamed with superstar artist Nick Derington, whose work I’ve loved on Doom Patrol. This looks to be the perfect combination of creators and is channelling the vibe of the old Batman: The Animated Series and I’m fully onboard with this title.
From the Publisher:
“Available to comics shops for the first time! Following the theft of a priceless Fabergé egg, the Riddler leads the Dark Knight on a wild hunt after its true owner: Jinny Hex, descendant of Jonah Hex! Guest-starring Deathstroke, Green Arrow and dozens of Riddler look-alikes in stories by Brian Michael Bendis with art by Nick Derington, originally published in BATMAN GIANT #3 and #4!“
Title: Wonder Twins
Publisher: DC/Wonder Comics
Issue No.: 6
Creative Team: Mark Russell – Writer : Stephen Byrne – Artist & Cover Artist
Mark Russell is doing something right. This is the second book this week he has written that I’m featuring in my picks. Wonder Twins is my favourite of the Wonder Comics line and this was supposed to be the last issue of the run. Luckily DC have noticed how marvellous this title is and have extended the run to 12 issues. This comic has it all – superb writing and beautiful art. I can’t recommend this book enough.
From the Publisher:
“The Scrambler has given the world one month to fix everything-or else suffer “The Great Scramble,” a dastardly plot that would swap the consciousnesses of everyone on the planet. As the scramble before the scramble commences, the Wonder Twins must team up with the Justice League to put a stop to the Scrambler’s plan! But an unexpected twist puts Jayna in conflict with the Justice League-will she choose the path of justice even if it means losing her best friend?“
Round Up
Also out this week are some other comics I recommend you take a look at including Supergirl #32, Black Hammer/Justice League #1, Outer Darkness #8, Giant Size X-Static #1 and The Six Million Dollar Man #5.
