Now on with the comics…
Star Trek: Defiant
Issue 1
IDW Publishing
Writer – Christopher Cantwell
Artist – Angel Unzueta
Buy digitally on Comixology – Star Trek: Defiant #1 (Link)
Someone is killing the gods… but while Benjamin Sisko and the U.S.S. Theseus have been facing the threats in the higher cosmos, very real casualties are growing on lower ground. The true enemy is a man, not a god, and Worf of House Martok has put together his own crew aboard the U.S.S. Defiant in the hopes of defeating the dangerous messiah behind a genocidal cult. Pulling from all eras of Star Trek canon to create something wholly unique and unexpected, Star Trek: Defiant unites some of the strongest personalities in the franchise — including Ro Laren, Spock, B’Elanna Torres, Lore, and more — on a mission with very little guarantee of success!
I’m enjoying the flagship Star Trek title IDW are putting out, but I try not to get sucked in to the multiple other titles they do, as I only have a finite comic budget. But when they announced this book and the tie in with main title coming soon, I just had to add it to my pull. Having Worf in charge of the Defiant again and being joined by Ro Laren, I knew resistance was futile. If this book is as good as the other IDW Trek titles, we’ll be in for a great ride.
Star Trek
Issue 5
IDW Publishing
Writer – Collin Kelly
Artist – Ramon Rosanas
Buy digitally on Comixology – Star Trek #5 (Link)
A fight for the fate of the universe has broken out in the God City. Up against an enemy ship that easily cracks the Theseus’ shields, the crew staves off enemy interlopers while the Orb of Destruction powers up with the Theseus in its scope. Already facing the impossible, the crew makes a shocking discovery that tests their faith in the mission and each other.
oh look, it’s the flagship Star Trek title. I’m having a blast with this title and I hope the synergy with Defiant, really propels the story to another level.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin – The Lost Years
Issue 2
IDW Publishing
Writers – Tom Waltz and Kevin Eastman
Artist – Ben Bishop
Colourist – Ifan Noor
THE TALE OF THE LAST RONIN’S FIRST MISSION CONTINUES! In the past, Michelangelo has mastered his first fighting form and has overcome his first gladiatorial challenge in Japan. With Master Splinter’s journal in his hands-and a burning desire for vengeance in his heart-Michelangelo resumes his westward trek across Asia and Europe in order to test his skills against his next deadly opponent. If he’s to have any chance of attaining victory in the final battle royal, Michelangelo will have to master an essential new martial skill-or die trying. Only then can he return to New York City to confront the Foot Clan. Thing is, he’s not alone. His dead brothers have joined him on his quest…and they won’t shut up! Meanwhile, in the present (a.k.a. our future!), Casey Marie Jones also follows the sage teachings found in Splinter’s journal as she continues her own journey as master and sensei to the next generation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!Writers Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz, alongside artist Ben Bishop (TMNT: The Last Ronin), bring us the next exciting chapter from the Ronin-verse!
I was a little worried this series wouldn’t be able to sustain the same level of storytelling we have in The Last Ronin, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well this book quickly established it’s own identity. If you have any love for the Turtles this comic is well worth picking up.

It’s the penultimate issue of our year-long celebration of Image’s 30th anniversary, and this time around we’ve got an all-new PRETTY DEADLY story by KELLY SUE DeCONNICK & EMMA RÍOS, the first NYC MECH tale in nearly 20 years by IVAN BRANDON & ANDY MacDONALD, the debut of GHOST MAKERS by EMI LENOX, “The Slacktacular Now” by JOHN ARCUDI & DOUG MAHNKE, and another look at IN HELL WE FIGHT! by JOHN LAYMAN & JOK. And as if that’s not enough, GEOFF JOHNS & ANDREA MUTTI bring us closer to the conclusion of “The Blizzard,” BRENDEN FLETCHER & ERICA HENDERSON prepare to wrap up “Red Stitches,” and the clock runs out for PATRICK KINDLON & MAURIZIO ROSENZWEIG’s “Gehenna.” Plus! SKOTTIE YOUNG’s “Stupid Fresh Mess” and DEAN HASPIEL’s “Billy Dogma!”
Plenty of new stories join the ongoing tales in this penultimate issue of this amazing anthology book. I hope that Image find someway to include an ongoing anthology title in their lineup as it’s a great way to revisit older stories and launch new ones.
All Against All

Letterer – Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
Buy digitally on Comixology – All Against All #4 (Link)
In the penultimate chapter of ALL AGAINST ALL, Helpless is loose, and now no one is safe. The last human prowls through the bowels of the ship, eviscerating every living thing he encounters. Meanwhile, B’Tay and his daughter V’lmann must find their way home through the warrens of the habitat while B’Tay himself struggles to suppress his animal nature. Can he keep control long enough to stop Helpless’ rampage?
Featuring variant covers by JACOB PHILLIPS (THAT TEXAS BLOOD) and ALISON SAMPSON (Sleeping Beauties)!
Excellent plot, pacing and art make this book a delight to read. Questioning nature vs nurture and whether humanity will exist when humans don’t, really sets this book apart.
Danger Street

Colourist – Dave Stewart
Letterer – Clayton Cowles

CHAPTER FOUR: LADY COP
The hunt for the murderers continues as Lady Cop prepares herself to take down some superhero suspects. But as the case develops, a true killer, Manhunter, emerges as a faithful servant to the Green Team and their quest for power. Only the Creeper seems to be on to these “innocent” kids and starts to uncover a conspiracy. It all begins with a single question: Who are the Outsiders?
Just check out that cover. More people need to turning on to this comic. Whilst it features lower tier characters, they are all ones I have some love for, and am glad to see back in print. For me, this is up there with Mister Miracle and Strange Adventures. Tom King really knows how to keep things surprising and interesting.
Writer – Peter Milligan
Artist – Michael Allred
Colourist – Laura Allred

But the spotlight won’t be big enough when the next generation of the X-Statix drop in! Join Peter Milligan and Michael Allred for the final half of their mutant celebrity saga!
Yes, The X-Cellent are back. Not sure why Marvel has chosen to release this a a new No.1 instead of continuing the previous run, but it’s great to have Milligan and the Allred’s back doing their own thing without a care for the rest of Marvel continuity. Bonkers and brilliant, this is the one mutant book everyone should be reading. Also Doop!

SINS OF SINISTER TIE-IN
These Sins of Sinister have really surprised me. The jump across years from issue to issue are keeping me guessing as to where things are going to end up.

Issue 3
Marvel Comics

CHAPTER THREE

I’m revelling in having Alan Davis work on the Avengers again. This comic perfectly captures the era it’s aping and is a great little romp.
