The Geeky Brummie Pull List with Bill and Ted are Doomed and The Rise of Ultraman
A strange Wednesday today where I only have two comics on my Pull List and they both make my Comic of the Week selection. Excellent! No other pulls this week but you can see preview pages from some other comics out today on our Twitter feed today. The Meanwhile section also continues this week with more comics related news.
Now on with the comics…

After defeating the evil dictator De Nomolos in Bogus Journey in 1995, things aren’t looking as excellent as they should for either Bill and Ted or Wyld Stallyns. There’s tension in the band and worry at home. Bill and Ted’s obsessiveness with writing the one song to bring peace to the world is affecting their playing and their relationships with their families. The band is losing favor with fans and the future isn’t shaping up as they were all led to believe it would from past (and future) events. Desperate for a solution Bill and Ted burst in to announce their great idea to revive the band’s fortunes: A world tour to spread the love-and the rock, and the love of the rock-to the world.
The new Bill and Ted movie has been released in some places with the UK having to wait until later this month for the opportunity to see it. But to help ease our Bill and Ted cravings Dark Horse are releasing this prequel story to the film written by screenwriter Ed Solomon and Evan Dorkin. Evan Dorkin was responsible for the Bill & Ted’s Excellent Comic Book a twelve-issue series published back in 1991. His art and affection for the characters made that series a joyful read. I hope that this new series captures the love and affection we all have for Bill and Ted and this is a most triumphant return to comics for our boys from San Dimas.

In darkness there lurks Kaiju – terrifying and unfathomable monsters. Between Kaiju and the rest of us stands the United Science Patrol! But who are these enigmatic defenders, and how do they perform their miracles? Shin Hayata and Kiki Fuji have spent half a lifetime trying to find out – and their quest is about to drive them toward a decades-old dark secret and put them on a collision course with a mysterious warrior from beyond the stars! Kyle Higgins (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), Mat Groom (Self/Made) and Francesco Manna (AVENGERS) reimagine the classic origin of a pop culture icon as THE RISE OF ULTRAMAN begins!
In some kind of coincidence my second pick of the week is also an adaptation of a popular screen franchise. This one is Ultraman, who first appeared on TV in 1966. Ultraman has since gone on to star in dozens of other TV series, films, comics, games and even a stage show. This new series from Marvel looks incredible and I hope this pushes this great character in to a more prominent place in the west. If you’ve never experienced Ultraman before you are in for a treat.
Do You Know Kung-Fu?
Shang-Chi returns to comics this month in a new series by Eisner Award-winning writer Gene Luen Yang and artists Dike Ruan and Philip Tan. With Shang-Chi set to make his live-action debut in the upcoming Marvel Studios film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings interest in the character is sure to rise.
Get your first look at Shang-Chi #1 in this motion comic trailer, featuring never-before-seen art from the first issue.
The new Shang-Chi series is due to hit comic book stores on September 30th.
BOOM! Goes BRZRKR
BOOM! Studio stirred up some online controversy this week when it launched a Kickstarter campaign for BRZRKR, the comic book co-created by Keanu Reeves. The campaign has already raised over 1/2 million dollars and some people have objected to the publisher using the platform to sell a book with such a high profile. For me the biggest problem with this the shipping costs to the UK which are astronomical. The single issues will still be appearing in comic shops soon and well before the projected shipping dates for this collection. Have a look at the campaign and decide for yourself if this is problematic here – BRZRKR Campaign
Beyond The Expanse
I’m a fan of the Sy-Fy and more recently Amazon series The Expanse so I was interested in the news that BOOM! Studios have announced a new four-issue limited-series. The comic is set between season 4 and the upcoming season 5 and is written Corinna Bechko with art by Alejandro Aragon. The Expanse due to hit comic stores in December 2020.
THE EXPANSE picks up with Chrisjen Avasarala at the end of the television show’s fourth season. The longtime Secretary-General of the United Nations finds herself dealing with the outcome of the tumultuous elections for her position and far from Earth but not its politics. When Bobbie Draper – a former Martian marine – brings Avasarala intel on an intergalactic black market weapons ring, Avasarala sees a chance to reclaim her political position through a clandestine operation. But as Draper digs deeper into this secret cabal, she soon realizes the threat they pose is far larger – and closer to home – than either of them ever imagined.
Corinna Bechko has been writing both comics and prose since her horror graphic novel Heathentown was published by Image/Shadowline in 2009. She has worked for numerous publishers including Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, BOOM! Studios, and Sideshow on titles such as Star Wars: Legacy, Savage Hulk, Angel, Once Upon a Time, Court of the Dead: The Chronicle of the Underworld and the Hugo-nominated series Invisible Republic, which she co-writes with Gabriel Hardman. Green Lantern: Earth One, co-written with Gabriel Hardman, was nominated for an Eisner in 2019. Her book for young readers, Smithsonian Dig it! Dinosaurs, co-written with Brenda Scott Royce, appeared last year as well. She lives in Los Angeles and has a zoology degree, both of which probably influence her writing even more than she realizes.
Save Hellblazer
With a Tom King Hellblazer book picking up great reviews I’d like to remind everyone how magnificent the current ongoing series is and how we shouldn’t allow DC to cancel it with issue 12.
