The Geeky Brummie Pull List with Billionaire Island.
It’s Wednesday so that means it’s time to pick you the new comics from Worlds Apart Birmingham (formerly Nostalgia & Comics) or it’s distingushed competition Forbidden Planet. These are Geeky Brummie’s picks of the comics available today from your local comic book store.
My comic of the week this week is from the creators of DC’s recent The Flintstones revival – Billionaire Island #1 from Ahoy Comics. My second big pick of the week I think will be one of the comics of the year – Strange Adventures #1 from DC Black Label.
I also recommend a bunch of other great comics to discover this week including a bunch of new titles from IDW, BOOM! Studio and Skybound at Image plus a couple of Marvel and DC titles.
If all of these great comics aren’t enough for you then why not bolster your reading list by checking out some of my previous choices in the videos at the bottom of the page.
Title: Billionaire Island
Publisher: Ahoy Comics
Issue No.: 1
Creative Team: Mark Russell – Writer : Steve Pugh – Artist, & Cover Artist
Ahoy Comics are making a mark on comics publishing by putting out interesting books that are doing something with the medium. They continue that streak with a new book from one of the hottest writers in comics right now Mark Russell. Billionaire Island #1 reunites Mark Russell and Steve Pugh – the partnership behind DC Comics expert subversion of the animated 60s classic, The Flintstones – in a comic which takes a swipe at income inequality and global climate change. Russell is adept at shining a light on issues that are affecting modern society and the divide between the 1% and the rest of us is ripe for his style of satire. If The Flintstones, Snagglepuss and Second Coming are anything to go by this comic will be a hot property. As Ahoy are relatively new on the comic scene you may have to ask your local comic shop to order this book in. I highly recommend that you do. This is a series that should not be missed.
From the Publisher:
“A savage satire reuniting the critically acclaimed team behind DC’s The Flintstones, Mark Russell (Second Coming) and Steve Pugh (Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass), in an all-new creator-owned series! Welcome to Billionaire Island, where anything goes…if you can afford it. But the island’s ultra-rich inhabitants are about to learn that their ill-gotten gains come at a very high price. Every AHOY comic also features extra prose stories and illustrations.“
Title: Strange Adventures
Publisher: DC Black Label
Issue No.: 1
Creative Team: Tom King – Writer : Mitch Gerads – Artist, Cover Artist : Evan ‘Doc’ Shaner – Artist, Variant Cover Artist
Mister Miracle was one of the best books released in recent years and now the creative team behind it are back with Evan Shaner in tow to drag Adam Strange, kicking and screaming into the 21st Century. Adam Strange is the quintessential 1950s pulp science hero cut from the same cloth as Doc Savage, Tarzan and Flash Gordon with a hint of John Carter of Mars. He’s been knocking around the DC Universe for a while and has had a regular presence in other books despite having no series of his own. He’s such a great character with an iconic look that it about time he received this kind of attention. The previews I’ve seen of the book are beautiful and the way Gerads and Shaner are working together plays to the strengths of both artists. Tom King is no slouch when it comes to writing and I’ve high hopes that the writer behind some of the great books of the last 10 years or so – Omega Men, The Vision and Sheriff of Babylon – will once again take comics to the edge of what the medium can do. The theme of the stories we tell ourselves, the stories we tell other people, and the gap between the two features heavily in his work and Adam Strange seems the ideal character to truly represent this on the page.
From the Publisher:
“After winning five Eisner Awards and topping year-end “best of lists,” the comic book of 2019 was Mister Miracle. The comic book of 2020 will be Strange Adventures.
The Mister Miracle team of writer Tom King and artist Mitch Gerads are joined by fan-favorite artist Evan “Doc” Shaner to bring you an epic tale in the tradition of Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns, and DC: The New Frontier—a story of blood, war, and love that readers will be talking about for years to come.
Adam Strange is the hero of Rann, a man famous throughout the galaxy for his bravery and honor. After leading his adopted home to victory in a great planetary war, Adam and his wife Alanna retire to Earth, where they are greeted by cheers, awards, and parades. But not all is as happy and nice as it seems, as the decisions Adam made during battles on Rann come back to haunt his family and threaten the entire DC Universe. And now a surprise DC hero will have to choose between saving Adam Strange and saving the world.
A story like no other, Strange Adventures is an ambitious, thrilling, shocking, and beautiful 12-issue saga that will push Adam Strange to the breaking point—and beyond!“
