The Geeky Brummie Pull List with #NTYCBD.
Hello and welcome to another very uncanny Pull List. As Covid-19 is still impacting on new comics and retailers the Pull List will take a different tack over the next few weeks. Matthew Rosenberg, writer of 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank, came up with the idea of NEW TO YOU COMIC BOOK DAY on Twitter. #NTYCBD was an opportunity to share some recommendations for comics people may have missed over recent years. Therefore I will be highlighting a few of the comics and series I’ve really enjoyed from the whole of my comic reading history. Where possible I’d like people to reach out to their local comic book store – a list of the big UK ones are at the bottom this post – and make a purchase from them. I will include a link to the books on Comixology as an option where possible. Some books may be more difficult to track down but it’ll be worth having a look on eBay for those.
This week I’m going to start with a couple of great comics that are well worth reading and I absolutely love and the first one should come as no surprise to regular listeners of the podcast.

From the Publisher:
4 KIDS WALK INTO A BANK is the darkly comedic story of four burgeoning child criminals and their elaborate plans. When a group of bumbling criminals show up in her father’s life looking to pull one last job, young Paige has two choices — let her father get caught up in their criminal hijinks or enlist her three best friends to do the job first. Paige picks the bad one.180ish pages of full color comic-booking about friendship, family, growing up, and grand larceny from rising star writer Matthew Rosenberg (WE CAN NEVER GO HOME, KINGPIN, SECRET WARRIORS) and equally rising star artist Tyler Boss (LAZARUS, CALEXIT, Vice Magazine). This volume collects the complete series that Kieron Gillen (THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, DARTH VADER) described as “Imagine Tarantino does Goonies. And excellent.” And Brian K. Vaughan (SAGA, Y THE LAST MAN) said was “Exploding with ambition and love of the medium!”
4 Kids Walk Into A Bank is a fabulous story. It’ll make you laugh, maybe even cry and when you least expect it it will shock you. The way the kids act feels so natural and they don’t shy away from the serious turns the story takes. This is a story about robbing a bank, and all the risks that come with it. The humour, the story, the pacing, and the ending all deliver in ways few comics do these day. The art is absolutely perfect for the book. Tyler Boss draws you in to every page, the style and layout make this a joy to read. I loved this book and read it in singles and I highly recommend you pick it up. If you need further convincing I’d say the phrase “Stranger Things meets Reservoir Dogs” kinda sums the whole book up pretty well.
Title: The Omega Men (2015-2016): The End is Here

From the Publisher:
From one of the hottest writers in the industry, Tom King (BATMAN, GRAYSON) and artist Barnaby Bagenda (A1) comes the critically acclaimed OMEGA MEN: THE END IS HERE—a revolutionary new take on the classic DC space opera.
Named A.V. CLUB/THE ONION best series of 2015, Omega Men is known for hard-hitting, thought-provoking action, intrigue, romance, and revenge, it’s the alpha and omega!
THE GALAXY’S MOST WANTED
Kyle Rayner, the White Lantern, is dead. And the Omega Men killed him. On live TV. They’re a criminal gang, a terrorist organization, a fanatical cult.
And they’re the only hope for freedom this godforsaken sector of the universe has.
No matter what the citizens of the Vega System think they saw, the White Lantern lives…as the Omega Men’s prisoner. What they really want him to be is their latest recruit in their relentless war against the all-powerful Citadel and its tyrannical Viceroy.
As Kyle gets to know this motley crew of outlaws, he’ll question everything he knows about being a hero. In this strange system where the Green Lanterns are forbidden, will he break his oath and join their revolution? Or will he discover that the Omega Men are monsters in the end?
Collects the OMEGA MEN #1-12.
I read the original Omega Men in the ’80 and have a lot of fond memories for those characters. Although I’d seen some of the lovely promo art for this revived series I never actually picked it up. I did read this book more recently as part of Birmingham Graphic Novel Club and instantly fell for it. This was Tom King’s first major work, and it’s easy to see what made people mark him out as a talent to watch, to read this its easy to see the themes and influences that would make up a lot of his later work. This is an excellent revival of the Omega Men, the addition of the underrated Green Lantern Kyle Rayner, and a single, strong through-line make the book a tight and riveting read. Tom King is a former CIA agent and it’s easy to see the parallels about the war on Iraq in this space opera, but this is a book that can be enjoyed without knowing much about the DC Universe continuity thanks to its self-contained nature. The book had a troubled publishing history and hints of this can be seen in the occasional guest artist which can be slightly jarring. I was so won over by this book I described it as a “Watchmen” for the 21st Century. I can’t recommend this book enough.
