The GB Pull List – #NTYCBD 29th April 2020

NTYCBD15042020

The Geeky Brummie Pull List with #NTYCBD.

Hello and welcome to yet another Pull List. This week I’ll be once again looking back at some comics I loved that may be new to you – #NTYCBD. Where possible I’d like people to reach out to their local comic book store – a list of the big UK ones are at the bottom this post – and make a purchase from them. I will include a link to the books on Comixology/Amazon as an option where possible. Some books may be more difficult to track down but it’ll be worth having a look on eBay for those.

This week I’m going to have a look a three books that are just a joy to read.

Title: Nextwave: Agents Of H.A.T.E.: The Complete Collection

Publisher: Marvel Comics

Written by Warren Ellis : Art by Stuart Immonen
Genres : Spy/Superhero

Page Count : 296 Pages

Comixology Link – Nextwave: Agents Of H.A.T.E.: The Complete Collection

From the Publisher:
Collects Nextwave: Agents Of H.A.T.E. #1-12.RRRAAAAAGGGGGHHHHH!!! Action! Excitement! Explosions! The Highest Anti-Terrorism Effort, or H.A.T.E. (a subsidiary of the Beyond Corporation©) put NEXTWAVE together to fight Bizarre Weapons of Mass Destruction. When NEXTWAVE discovers that H.A.T.E. and Beyond© are terrorist cells themselves, and that the BWMDs were intended to kill them, they are less than pleased. In fact, they are rather angry. So they make things explode. Lots of things. Starring Monica Rambeau (formerly Captain Marvel and Photon), Aaron Stack (Machine Man), Tabitha Smith (X-Force’s Meltdown), monster-hunter Elsa Bloodstone and The Captain! If you like anything, you will LOVE NEXTWAVE! BOOM! Included on the Top Ten Great Graphic Novels for 2007 by the Youth Adult Library Services Association, Nextwave is a pure extraction of comic-book action and adventure, with plenty of kicks, punches and explosions along the way!

Warren Ellis has written a lot of comics. He also writes a lot of different styles of comics. Nextwave is in a style all of it’s own. When other superheroes were getting more gritty and serious – the heroes of Nextwave were getting more ridiculous and bonkers. Taking some of my favourite lesser known Marvel characters – Aaron Stack and Elsa Bloodstone especially – Nextwave is an absolute riot. You can’t help but have fun with this book. It is full of humour and a really great story. The art by Stuart Immonen is the perfect match for the wonderfully playful writing of Warren. This book is so great it even has its own theme song.

Title: X-Statix: The Complete Collection Vol. 1

Publisher: Marvel Comics

Written by Peter Milligan : Art by Mike Allred, Darwyn Cooke, Duncan Fegredo, Sean Phillips & Paul Pope
Genres : Superhero

Page Count : 495 Pages

Comixology Link – X-Statix: The Complete Collection Vol. 1

From the Publisher:

Collects X-Force (1991) #116-129, Brotherhood (2001) #9, X-Statix (2002) #1-5.

Peter Milligan and Michael Allred reboot X-Force into the reality stars X-Statix, in their bright and bold 21st-century deconstruction of the X-books! Sex. Money. Power. Fame. That’s what drives these mutant heroes! But what really happens when an X-team becomes huge media stars? Find out in this wild examination of celebrity culture — with a far higher body count than any reality TV show! Fall in love with the Orphan, the Anarchist, Dead Girl, Phat, Vivisector, U-Go Girl, the incomparable Doop and more — but don’t get too attached, as there’s no guarantee that any of them will make it out of each battle alive! And when the team relaunches their brand as the X-Statix, will it propel them to even greater fame? Or will the interactive O-Force become the hot new thing?

My next choice this week follows in a similar vein to Nextwave. Written by fellow Brit Peter Milligan with art by Mike Allred, X-Statix rebooted the increasing dour X-Force and took it in a completely different direction. One that still stands out as one of the best X-Books ever released. Riding the wave of the ever popular reality TV boom, X-Statix did things the X-Books had stopped doing – having fun. This book is also responsible for introducing another of my favourite characters – Doop. Unfortunately this doesn’t come with its own theme song.

Title: The Puma Blues

Publisher: Dover Publications

Written by Stephen Murphy : Art by Michael Zulli

Genres : Fantasy/Science Fiction
Page Count : 559 Pages

Comixology Link – The Puma Blues

From the Publisher:

Originally published in the 1980s as comic books, these interrelated stories visualize life at the turn of the 21st century as a world of mutated animals, in which a lone government agent investigates the truth behind environmental degradation. Hardcover edition with new ending and more bonus material.

“Intriguing.” ― The Village Voice.

“Zulli’s wildlife art is utterly breathtaking.” ― The Comics Journal.

Contains adult material.

Alongside Cerebus, The Puma Blues was one of the first indie comics I collected. Initially drawn in by the beautiful black and white art of Michael Zulli, I fell in love with the characters and story. Containing some beautiful moments and visuals, including flying Manta Rays, The Puma Blues pressed forward a message of environmental responsibility, which I was very aware of at the time it was originally published. Many issues contained sections called “Notes on the Environment” and “The Fraying Weave”, which offered facts and often scary statistics about tropical rain forests, endangered animals, and other environmental concerns. This is truly one of the greatest graphic novels of all time and you owe it to yourself to read it.

My Pulls

With no new comics to buy this week what can you do in the meantime? Let your local comic shop know you are here for them.
