The Geeky Brummie Pull List with The Return of the Comics.
Wow! Things have certainly changed this week. Many of the UK’s comic shops have now reopened (see the list at the bottom of this post for links to a few of the big ones where details of new opening hours and store policy can be found) but one thing that is quite so clear is which comics they will have in stock. With all the delays over recent weeks there is sure to be a backlog and with DC switching distributor we can’t be sure what will be arriving here in the UK.
If you have a regular order in place with your local comic book store I’m fairly certain that as stock arrives your order will be filled. I’d also suggest caution in returning to pick up your books – maybe give the store a call and arrange when you’ll be looking to pick up to avoid congestion outside and inside the store. In my experience most comics shops now have the comics section hidden away from the Funko Pops and other merchandise up or down stairs that are not particularly social distance friendly.
I like everyone else want to support my local store as much as possible but I don’t want to overwhelm them in these early days. I’ll reach out over social media to let them know I’m still here and ready when they are to pick up my comics. It will take some time for things to get back to what used to be considered normal but remember if you do go back to the shops be patient, be considerate and thank the staff for being there.
With some comics hitting shelves this week I’m going to pick out a few that have caught my eye. It’s possible they may have been delayed but if you fancy checking them out too ask your store to add a copy to your standing order.
Now on with the comics…
Title: Adventureman

From the Publisher:
A CATACLYSMIC ADVENTURE DECADES IN THE MAKING!In this WILDLY AFFORDABLE TRIPLE-LENGTH FIRST ISSUE, revisit how the legend of the greatest pulp hero of them all, ADVENTUREMAN, ended in a heartbreaking CLIFFHANGER with our hero facing execution at the vile hand of his ultra-nemesis BARON BIZARRE on the eve of the MACABRAPOCALYPSE…or did it?!? Eighty years after his apparent demise, single mother Claire and her Adventurefan son Tommy seem to be the only two people alive that remember the thrilling ADVENTUREMAN sagas…but from that memory burns THE SPARK OF RESURRECTION! WHERE HIS STORY ENDED…HER STORY BEGINS! This sense-obliterating, earth-shaking, imagination-quaking adventure that spans generations comes to you from MATT FRACTION (SEX CRIMINALS, Hawkeye) and TERRY & RACHEL DODSON (RED ONE, X-Men/Fantastic Four)!!!
A new book with art by Rachel Dodson & Terry Dodson – yes please! Written by Matt Fraction of Hawkeye/Sex Criminals fame – double yes please! This dieselpunk book looks great and is set to scratch my Doc Savage/Indiana Jones itch. The book seems to have a meta angle to it with a book within a book story and the world building and character development is spot on. Of course the art is eye wateringly beautiful to look at and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
Title: Strange Adventures
Issue: 2
Publisher: DC Black Label
-
-
- Written by Tom King : Pencils, Inks, Colour & Cover by Mitch Gerads & Evan Shaner
-
- Genres : Superhero
From the Publisher:
What is the truth about Adam Strange? When an activist who publicly accused him of war crimes ends up dead, the public begins to doubt Strange’s stories about his adventures on the planet Rann-and he’s even starting to doubt himself. It’s going to take a special investigator to get the truth, and he’s going to have to tear apart Adam Strange’s life and reputation to do it.
A special miniseries set on two worlds, it takes two artists to bring Strange Adventures to life. Mitch Gerads tackles the earthbound sequences, while Doc Shaner launches us into space. And it’s all written by Tom King, the Eisner Award-winning writer who brought you Mister Miracle, Omega Men, and Sheriff of Babylon.
I loved the first issue of Strange Adventures. Tom King, Mitch Gerads & Evan Shaner did a phenomenal job switching between timelines and the shift in art styles adds to the overall effect. I’m a big fan of Adam Strange and I’m loving seeing him headline a major book for the first time in years. I have to say I prefer Evan Shaner’s work here – it just looks so perfect. There is a long way to go in this 12 issue series and if it reaches even half the heights of Mister Miracle I’ll be a very happy bunny.
Title: Wynd
Issue: 1
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
-
- Written by James Tynion IV : Pencils & Cover by Michael Dialynas
From the Publisher:
Wynd lives a quiet life in Pipetown — working at the local tavern, out of sight in the secret rooms beneath the floorboards, often stealing away to catch glimpses of the son of the castle’s groundskeeper as he works. But Wynd also has a secret… magical blood betrayed by his pointed ears, forbidden within the city limits. His shaggy hair has obscured them for most of his life, but now that Wynd is a teenager they are growing too unwieldy to hide. Joined by his best friend Oakley and Thorn, the groundskeeper’s son, Wynd’s strange dreams and an encounter with the city guard send him on the most dangerous adventure he could imagine, where Wynd will discover the magic in the world around him and, most importantly, the magic within himself. The GLAAD Award-winning team of writer James Tynion IV (Batman, The Woods) and artist Michael Dialynas (The Woods) present a new young adult fantasy series about learning to spread your wings no matter the dangers that life puts in your way.
I don’t know much about this book but I have heard good things about it. It looks like BOOM! has another hit on its hands with this one, the opening pages features a brilliantly illustrated transformation of the lead character. Michael Dialynas art is beautiful and we get to see the wonderful storytelling of James Tynion IV. This comic is another excellent addition to the BOOM! Studios line-up which just goes from strength t0 strength.
BOOM! Studio have put out this video preview that gives you a great look at what to expect from this book.
My Pulls
With no new comics to buy this week what can you do in the meantime? Let your local comic shop know you are here for them. Contact them and see if they are still open, continue to pre-order titles, and use this as an opportunity to purchase one of my #NTYCBD suggestions, a new collection or back issues from them. Use one of the apps or websites below to see what’s due to be coming out soon and pre-order the titles you’re interested in, since, as of now, publishers still intend to release the comics that are not currently able to get to stores.
