The Geeky Brummie Pull List with Amazing Fantasy
Another quiet summer week for comics with the latest issue of Amazing Fantasy taking our top stop and Once and Future makes up the remainder of this weeks list. Five other comics make it in to our On The Radar section, including the first issues of Superman ’78, Darkhawk and Cable: Reloaded, and you should definitely check them out.
In Meanwhile… we return to the O.Z. in a new Kickstarter and Worlds Apart Birmingham has Free Comic Book Day! Part Deux.
If you want to send any comics or comic related events we should feature, feel free to reach out to me at keith@geekybrummie.com. Now on with the comics…
Title: Amazing Fantasy
Issue: 2
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Written and Illustrated by Kaare Andrews
EXPERIENCE THESE HEROES LIKE NEVER BEFORE! Each of our heroes from across time and space seem to have found their tribes in this strange new land of wonder. But World War II Cap, Teenaged Spidey and Spy-School Black Widow soon discover that every paradise has its own costs and, eventually, everyone must pay! Is there a way to avoid the coming war? Or is fate the flute that leads us to our inevitable end? Our Amazing Fantasy continues!
The first issue of Amazing Fantasy rocked. This is just the kind of Marvel book I used to love as a kid. This isn’t hindered by current continuity and is only interested in telling a rip-roaring adventure story. Andrews art is spectacular as his writing and that makes for a comic that is fun and enjoyable to read. With so many books linked to events or long running storylines it’s a breath of fresh air to have a comic that just wants to tell a good story on it’s own terms.
Title: Once and Future
Issue: 19
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Written by Kieron Gillen : Art By Dan Mora : Coloured by Tamra Bonvillain
Is it possible that King Arthur and Merlin can save England from… King Arthur(s) and Merlin(s)?!?! A very strange war is a brewin’ indeed.
The Otherworld and our world have collided and England is ground zero for the chaos!
Bridgette has spent her whole life fighting to prevent this future from happening, but now that it’s arrived she’s at a loss. Fortunately, she has Duncan by her side, and he’s not about to let Gran give up.
Once and Future continues to be a great read. The modern spin on British folklore is so well done it deserves to be read by more. The writing and art are top notch and really drive the story. The only downside of the book is it whips by so quickly that the wait between issues feels like waiting for King Arthur to return.
On the radar this week some other comics not on the Pull List but well worth checking out:

Vinyl #3

As Walter continues to go even deeper into the sunflower death cult’s underground gore bunker, his serial killer friends decide to split up to sew their unique brands of chaos. New wickedly disturbing monsters are revealed on both sides. Who wins when the criminally insane take on pure evil?

Return to The O.Z.
A while back I had the pleasure of reading the first issue of The O.Z. I was quite taken with this contemporary take on the classic tale of Dorothy and friends. I loved a surprising twist involving Toto but you’ll have to read that first issue to find out more. Now the creators are back with the second issue on Kickstarter. You can check out the official press release and some preview pages below.
THE O.Z. #1-2
Written by David Pepose : Art by Ruben Rojas : Coloured by Whitney Cogar : Lettered by DC Hopkins : Cover by Ruben Rojas : Variant Covers by Maan House, Farid Karami, and Cem Iroz
What if Mad Max took place in The Wizard of Oz? Find out in THE O.Z., returning to Kickstarter now from multiple Ringo Award-nominated writer David Pepose (Spencer & Locke, Scout’s Honor) and superstar artist Ruben Rojas (Proton). Fans of The Old Guard, DMZ, and Fables will love this action-packed fantasy adventure, available to order now on Kickstarter!
THE O.Z. follows Dorothy Gale’s granddaughter and namesake, a disillusioned Iraq war veteran who is swept up by a tornado and dropped into the war-torn land of Oz. Now leading the Resistance against the Scarecrow’s regime, Dorothy must join forces with the Tin Soldier, the Prince of Lions and Jack Pumpkinhead if she hopes to locate the all-powerful Silver Slippers and bring peace to the Occupied Zone… or as the locals call it, The O.Z.
We are incredibly thrilled for The O.Z. to make its long-awaited return to Kickstarter,” said series writer David Pepose. “Thanks to the overwhelming support of more than 1,200 backers in our last campaign, we’re excited to pull the curtain back and lead our Yellow Brick Road Warriors through even more of our dangerous and sweeping fantasy world. If you’re a fan of L. Frank Baum’s iconic Wizard of Oz mythology, you’ll love our action-packed twist with The O.Z.
THE O.Z.’s Kickstarter will fund the series’ 44-page second issue, with early bird specials and catch-up tiers available for those who missed the first campaign. Rewards include:
-
Behind-the-scenes materials including David Pepose’s script, Ruben Rojas’ raw inks, and Whitney Cogar’s untouched colors;

-
