The Geeky Brummie Pull List with Red Room
Some great comics make it on to the Pull List this week Our comic of the week comes from indie legend Ed Piskor who invites you in to the Red Room. A magnificent seven other new comics make it in to our On The Radar section though and you should definitely check them out.
In Meanwhile…pick a few of our favourite interview and panels from the online Bunker that homed the Lawless Comic Con last weekend.
Now on with the comics…
Title: Red Room
Issue: 1
Publisher: Fantagraphic Books
Written and Illustrated by Ed Piskor
From the creator of Hip Hop Family Tree and X-Men: Grand Designcomes this ALL-NEW monthly comic book series, with a specially priced, self contained, double-sized debut issue! Red Room is a cyberpunk, outlaw, splatterpunk masterpiece. Aided by the anonymous dark web and nearly untraceable crypto-currency, there has emerged a subculture of criminals who live-stream and patronize webcam murders for entertainment. Who are the murderers? Who are the victims? How do we stop it? Red Room #1 is 64 pages of dynamic storytelling and gorgeous art. Every issue of this 12-part series is a complete, self-contained, satisfying story. As seen on Piskor’s YouTube channel sensation, Cartoonist Kayfabe!
Hold on you your hats. This book isn’t pulling any punches as Ed Piskor returns with a new comic that is weird and graphic and plays on the evils that come with an interconnected world. This looks incredible and takes me back to the indie comics like A1 and the work of Robert Crumb. This won’t be for everyone but horror fans will be in for a treat.
Title: We Only Find Them When They’re Dead
Issue: 6
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Written by Al Ewing : Art by Simone Di Meo
From the Publisher:
Fifty years have passed since Captain Malik and the crew of the Vihaan II embarked on their fateful mission-and the universe has changed in ways no one ever expected.Jason Hauer, one of the fated Vihaan II crew, is now 71 years old and living a life on the razor’s edge between the Harvesters and the Worshippers. But as these rivalreligious factions clash throughout the galaxy, Jason finds himself thrown into the center of the chaos and forced to confront his tortured past. But the only people who can help Jason have their own secret agenda-one that may bring him face to face with Captain Malik in ways beyond comprehension…
This high concept sci-fi series now takes a leap 50 years into it’s future to continue the story of the Vihaan II. Al Ewing is swiftly becoming the 21st Century Alan Moore, a writer who can pivot from blockbuster super-heroics to mind expanding cosmic explorations often within the same comic. Some might find the single issue releases of this title less satisfying as the story builds but the whole thing is phenomenal and is another example of the risks BOOM! takes with its output.
Title: Way of X
Issue: 2
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Written by Simon Spurrier: Art by Bob Quinn
From the Publisher:
A VILLAIN REVEALED! The dark force hiding within Krakoa begins to show its true form. The answers are hidden…WITHIN THE MINDSCAPE. Kurt’s—and…others. One of the most dangerous mutants is reborn!
British writers are just knocking out of the park right now. Whilst Al Ewing is doing his thing, Si Spurrier is matching him speech bubble for speech bubble. After just one issue this comic has proved itself to be one of the best X-books available. Nightcrawler has always been a character that can be used to tell stories that question identity and faith. And now with the impact the formation of the Krakoan nation he seeks those answers more than ever. Highly recommended.
Title: Ultraman: The Trials of Ultraman
Issue: 3
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Written by Mat Groom & Kyle Higgins : Art by Francesco Manna
From the Publisher:
It turns out that the forces aligned against the USP and Ultraman are far more widespread—and more organized!—than our heroes had ever suspected. If they’re going to survive, they’ll need a new ally of their own…and the man they’re looking at just so happens to be one of the most powerful and influential people in the world. But what’s his history with the USP, and why does he seem to have his own hidden agenda?
Bet this surprised you. If you’re a regular reader of this column I’m sure you already know how much I lover this series. G. Willow Wilson is doing a phenomenal job writing this series and the art by Nick Robles (and M.K. Perker on this arc) is just beautiful. This is a worthy continuation of the legendary Vertigo series and if you were a fan of that I urge you to pick up this book.
On the radar this week some other comics not on the Pull List but well worth checking out:
