Title: Star Trek: Year Five

Issue: 24

Publisher: IDW Publishing

Written by Jackson Lanzing and Colin Kelly : Art by Silvia Califano : Inks by Elisabetta D’Amico : Coloured by Charlie Kirchoff : Lettered by Neil Uyetake : Cover by Stephen Thompson

Their journey has taken them to the edge of the known universe and beyond. They’ve faced down impossible odds, conquered incredible enemies, and now, here in the shadow of home, their mission will come to an end… and nothing will ever be the same. The crew of the Enterprise will put it all on the line in the grand finale of Star Trek: Year Five from showrunners Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly (Gotham City Garage, Green Arrow) and artist Silvia Califano.

This is the last issue of the story, we have a final epilogue issue to follow this, so I felt the time was right to give this book the title of Comic of the Week. Across the last 24 issue the team of creatives under the guidance of Lanzing and Kelly have created one of the best Star Trek stories ever made. I’ve loved how this series capture all that made the original series so great and how elegantly it has woven in the changes coming as the crew and the ship move towards the era of TMP and the subsequent movies. If you’ve not picked this up you really should grab the trades and immerse yourself in the 23rd Century and revel in the incredible story that has been crafted here. Highly recommended.

batman892

Title: Batman ’89

Issue: 2

Publisher: DC Comics

Written by Sam Hamm : Art by Joe Quinones : Coloured by Leonardo Ito

A showdown in Burnside leaves both Batman and the Gotham borough reeling. As the community rallies together behind Harvey Dent, can Bruce find a way forward for both Batman and the city?

Loved the first issue and Quinones is the perfect artist for this series. It’s been a while since I’ve regularly bought a Batman book and I feel really out of the loop with the main line, but as a big fan of Burton’s movies this has proven to be a great way to get reacquainted with the Dark Knight.

fightgirls3

Title: Fight Girls

Issue: 4

Publisher: AWA/Upshot Studios

Written and Illustrated by Frank Cho : Coloured by Sabine Rich

Ten hard-as-nails women face off in an ancient contest of champions where the winner truly takes all: the title of “Queen of the Galaxy.” To win the challenge each contestant must survive the hazards of the planet’s harsh landscape, the ferocious predators on and below its surface, and their fellow contestants. This edition of the contest has a twist: one of the contestants is an infiltrator who has her eye on something bigger than the prize. Who is she and what does she really want?

This book looks incredible and has been great fun so far. I can feel it building to an interesting denouement and as long as the journey there continues to be filled with adventure and giant monsters I’m there for it.

trialofmagneto2

Title: The Trial of Magneto

Issue: 2

Publisher: Marvel Comics

Written by Leah Williams : Art by Lucas Werneck : Coloured by Edgar Delgado : Cover by Valerio Schiti

HABEAS CORPSES! Heroes of the Marvel Universe came to Krakoa for a memorial. Now they’ve got a fight. Magneto pushes Krakoa and the Council to the brink! Also…there’s something wrong with the body…

I didn’t pick the first issue up of this series as I wasn’t sure it would do anything interesting. How wrong I was, my local comic shop had slipped it into my regular order and I was hooked. The art is absolutely lovely and there is much more going on than I expected. Things are going to chance for the mutants as a result of the contents of this series and Leah Williams has proved before how good a writer she can be.

Bermuda must get to the north shore of Triangle, the island that is at ground zero of a bizarre dimensional portal—it’s a two-day ride via passenger lizard… or it’s a half-day walk if you’re willing to sneak through Soldier’s Bay. Pledge for Rico

The Geeky Brummie team love the work of artist Ian Richardson, so it’s fantastic that we are now able to pledge on this new collection of Ian’s work on Kickstarter. The campaign is being run by Unlikely Heroes Studios who published The Unthinkables by Ian and writer Paul Hanley earlier this year. The book will contain a compilation of work from the last couple of years including many previously unseen commissions. This book looks amazing and has already smashed its funding goal – it has now added some incredible stretch goals.

I’ll hand over now to Laurie-Anne Foster from Unlikely Heroes Studios for more about this spectacular campaign:

Welcome to the Art of Ian Richardson! Everything contained within this book has never been seen in print, in any publication, ever before. It’s a compilation of commissions, large and small, as well as personal warm-up pieces and color pieces with the assistance of colorists. We’ve collected 132 pages of artwork in this first volume, AS WELL AS some fun captions and comments Ian wrote for many of the pieces as a personal touch! The book will be A4 size and perfect bound!

Ian Richardson has been a professional comic book artist since 2001, with his first published work appearing in 2000AD on a Sinister Dexter story with Dan Abnett.  Since then he has worked on an impressive plethora of titles: Image’s Noble Causes;Platinum’s Cowboys & Aliens; the Marvel UK line of Captain America, The Falcon, Doctor Doom, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Luke Cage, and Modok; Dark Horse’s Halo:Escalation series; Zenescope’s Grimm Fairy Tales; Unlikely Heroes Studios’ The Unthinkables; and, of course, he continues to work on Judge Dredd and similar titles for 2000AD to this day!

Find Ian at @ian_richardson_art on Instagram.

You can back the campaign now over on Kickstarter, but be quick as there will on be 9 day left from the time this post is published – The Art Of Ian Richardson

Final Girl Returns

I picked up the first issue of Final Girl and Hardcore Bazooka Allstars earlier this year directly from Plan B Comics and immediately fell in love with the work of writer/artist Nick Holmes. This comics captured all things I loved about 80s movies with an art style that reminded me of the best British indie creators like Jamie Hewlett (co-creator of Tank Girl and Gorillaz). Now the second issue of Final Girl is being made available via a new Kickstarter campaign.

Here’s Nick to explain more about this great new comic:

Set in the world of Classic American Slasher Movies, where it’s always 1981 and every summer camp, high school, suburban home and cabin in the woods has it’s own homicidal urban legend, Final Girl is the ultimate Survivor. Like Laurie Strode in ‘Halloween’ or Ash in ‘Evil Dead’ she’s survived her night of gruelling terror and now she’s bringing the massacre back to the Psychopaths.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer for the slasher generation – she’s the last line of defense against overwhelming evil which builds it’s mythology upon the classic horror movies of the 80’s from Friday the 13th to A Nightmare on Elm Street via The Evil Dead!

This comic is a personal passion project of mine and my love letter to the Slasher movies of the 80’s that myself and countless other gorehounds grew up on.  Final Girl, Sworn Enemy of Backwoods Mutants, Redneck Cannibals and Dream Demons everywhere!

While the first issue established the character and world of Final Girl, this issue begins one of her first adventures (to be concluded in issue 3) where the character really gets to kick loose and smash evil!

It’s Evil Dead meets Friday the 13th as an ancient evil is unleashed in the woods which also happen to be the favourite haunt of notorious slasher legend, Sackhead Jack! And the only thing standing between these two forces of nature and some hard partying teens is Final Girl!

Final Girl is a 32 page black and white US Comic sized book, printed on recycled paper and with a full colour cover (or black and white if you pledge the sketch cover).

You can back the campaign now over on Kickstarter, and there will be 15 day left from the time this post is published for you to pledge – Final Girl
