The Geeky Brummie Pull List with Star Trek: Year Five
After a busy couple of weeks, things calm down for this Pull List. Taking the title of Comic of the Week we have the final issue of Star Trek: Year Five. Making up the rest of the Pull List are two mutant titles from Marvel, New Mutants and Excalibur. This week we only have one comic to look out for On The Radar and that is Defenders also from Marvel.
In Meanwhile… Matthew Rosenberg pops by to tell us a little more about his new comic series.
If you want to send any comics or comic related events we should feature, feel free to reach out to me at keith@geekybrummie.com.
Now on with the comics…
Title: Star Trek: Year Five
Issue: 25
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Written by Paul Cornell, Jim McCann, Jackson Lanzing, Colin Kelly, Jody Houser and Brandon Easton : Art by Christopher Jones, Silvia Califano, Angel Hernandez and Stephen Thompson
The five-year mission may be over, but now it’s time for the next adventure to begin. Join the crew of the Enterprise for the end of an old chapter and the beginning of the new in this special oversized epilogue from the entire Year Five series writing team that bridges the gap between the end of the five-year mission and the beginning of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
With the main story wrapping up last issue, this final epilogue gathers together all of the writers and artists who have worked on this excellent title for one last hurrah. This title has been a delight to read and I’m hoping we might see more adventures set during The Motion Picture era, one that was last explored by Marvel but without the ability to call upon the legacy of the series. If you’ve not yet picked up this series, grab this issue and then grab all of the previous 24 as well. Excellent stuff.
Title: New Mutants
Issue: 22
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Written by Vita Ayala : Art by Rod Reis : Letters by Travis Lanham
SHADOW KING SHOWDOWN! He’s been skirting the line…skulking around the Wild Hunt…and now he’s simply gone too far. On Krakoa, where the dead walk among the living and the unforgivable has been forgiven, the NEW MUTANTS now battle an old foe…the psychic entity known as the Shadow King!
I like this series. I like seeing these characters interacting. I like Rod Reis’ art, it’s a really lovely look and I’m here for it. I like what Ayala is doing here and it seems to exist mostly without too much influence from the other X-books. This is a series I enjoy reading and that is exactly what I want from my comics.
Title: Excalibur
Issue: 24
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Written by Tini Howard : Art by Marcus To : Coloured by Erick Arciniega : Letters by Ariana Maher
KINGDOMS OF BLOOD! The ten kingdoms of Otherworld must decide: Are Excalibur heroes of the realm, or witchbreed to be put to the stake? The peace brought to Otherworld by their X OF SWORDS victory comes to an end.
Much like New Mutants, this is a series I enjoy reading. There is plenty going on, there are nods to events that happened way back in old Captain Britain stories. Would I like more of that old school Captain Britain feel? Yes, of course I would, but this is not Marvel UK and they are playing pretty nice with the characters we know and love, which is more than can be said for past comics. I love the Braddocks and this series is trying something new.
On the radar this week some other comics not on the Pull List but well worth checking out:
Defenders #3
Marvel Comics
Written by Al Ewing : Art by Javier Rodriguez
THE DEBUT OF THE DEADLY MORIDUN! Doctor Strange and his misfit crew land in a world of dark, primal magic—where our world’s master of the mystic arts is just a magical morsel for countless hungry sorcerers. The most powerful entity on this plane, the maker of magic itself, already knows the Defenders and their mission. Their paltry abilities mean nothing to him, save one: The power to move between cosmos. All of existence lies vulnerable as the Defenders find themselves outmatched!
7 Inch Apocalypse
Matthew Rosenberg first came to my attention with Twelve Reasons to Die and 4 Kids Walk In To A Bank for Black Mask. He has since gone on to write some of my favourite books including Hawkeye: Freefall and Multiple Man. In November, alongside Tyler Boss, his collaborator on 4 Kids, Matthew will be bringing us his newest book What’s The Furthest Place From Here, published by Image Comics. Set in a post apocalyptic world. where music is everything, each issue of the deluxe version of the comics will shop with an exclusive 7″ vinyl single. I’m really looking forward to this series and when Matthew asked if he could do short promo videos for people, we jumped at the chance. So here is Matthew to tell you more about this exciting new comic…
