DEGENERATES ONE AND ALL
THE WORLD’S STRANGEST HEROES ARE BACK IN THE DC UNIVERSE! After the events of Lazarus Planet, more people than ever have active metagenes! Most of these new metahumans have become misfits, shunned and imprisoned by a fearful society. They are hidden away in the dark, lost to a system that only sees them as weapons or guinea pigs-ticking time bombs that can only be defused by the Unstoppable Doom Patrol! Robotman, Elasti-Woman, and Negative Man are joined by their brand-new teammates Beast Girl and Degenerate and led by Crazy Jane’s mysterious new alter, the Chief, on a mission of saving the world by saving the monsters!
I’ve always loved the Doom Patrol. I first discovered them in the early 80s when Paul Kupperberg brought them back from obscurity in the post Crisis world. Then Grant Morrison really hooked me with his phenomenal run of comics. Rachel Pollack continued that fascination but I drifted away for a while to return when Gerard Way launched the Young Animal imprint and the Doom Patrol kicked ass again. Now one of my favourite teams of misfit are back, after cameoing in recent issues of World’s Finest with a run that has already been expanded to 7 issues. I’m really looking forward to this series and I can’t wait to see David Lafuente as guest artist on issue 4.

UNMADE
“No livin’ thing’s supposed to have power like this. No matter how blue your eyes are or how pretty your face is, you’re just as much a monster as me.”
War rages on between Metropolis’s two men of steel, Superman and Metallo! As Metallo’s new body continues to evolve in unexpected and nightmarish ways, the voice of his “operating system” has been changing too, testing the limits of his sanity. Finally, when his alien tech takes on a life of its own and infects the most violent members of the Blue Earth movement, the resultant abominations target Superman’s greatest strength and greatest weakness: his family! Introducing the first appearance of the Necrohive!
I was initially only picking this up for the Power Girl story but the whole Dawn of DC line has really brought me back to DC. With this and Superman, DC really are entering a new golden era of Kryptonian comics.
Dungeons and Dragon: Saturday Morning Adventures
Issue 1
IDW Publishing
Writers – Sam Maggs and David M. Booher
Artist – George Kambadais
Buy digitally on Comixology – Dungeons and Dragons: Saturday Morning Adventures #1 (Link)
Long before the world turned upside down and new generations discovered D&D, six kids boarded a magical roller coaster and were transported to the Forgotten Realms! Noble ranger Hank, intrepid acrobat Diana, quiet thief Sheila, impulsive barbarian Bobby, fearful cavalier Eric, and uncertain magician Presto only want to get back to their own world. But escaping the Realms has turned out to be much harder than getting there! Danger lurks at every turn, the enigmatic Dungeon Master is less than helpful, and Venger, the force of evil, will stop at nothing to get his hands on the magical weapons the kids have come to rely on. To top it off, Hank has made a startling discovery: Despite the dangers, Sheila, Bobby, Diana, and the others aren’t so sure they want to go home after all!
Even though I was technically too old when the series first aired, I really loved the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon. I even have the DVD boxset. So it was a bit of a no-brainer when this book was announced. With D&D back in the headlines I hope this series finds a new audience to enthral and we see more of the adventures of Hank, Diana, Shelia, Eric, Presto and Bobby.
Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain
Issue 2
Marvel Comics
Writer – Tini Howard
Artist – Vasco Georgiev
Colourist – Erick Arciniega
Letterer – Ariana Maher
Buy digitally on Comixology – Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain #2 (Link)
TWO CAPTAINS—ONE COUNTRY—AND ONE HELL OF A FIGHT! Britain has a new champion—but don’t be mistaken, she’s been here for years. Morgan Le Fay is back for vengeance, and Captain Britain is first on her list! But where one captain fails, another may suffice…and Peggy Carter’s got a right hook that would inspire the devil herself. Magical machinations and feral fisticuffs abound in Tini Howard and Vasco Georgiev’s continuing epic!
Oh Captain, my Captain. So this issue gives me both Captain Britain and Captain Carter. How could I resist. After an enjoyable first issue that set things up, it looks like this series will continue to entertain over the coming months.

Get Ready for Quantum
We covered Quantum a few weeks ago when it was first announced. Since then more information has emerged and I thought it was a great time to show you what’s in store when the book launches, only in newsagents initially, next month.
Quantum, from Time Bomb Comics, is a new, physical comic magazine which will be available in newsagents across the UK and select international retailers, in a bold new step to reach a new audience.
Following on from the success of Time Bomb’s 2022 Gerry Anderson Spectrum anthology, Quantum will be available bi-monthly in WH Smith’s, alongside independent newsagents. The title will also be available internationally, with distribution already secured in Germany, Sweden, Australia and the United States.
Quantum #1 will contain five stories, and begin four ongoing serials, each one set in a world alternate to our own. Time Bomb also plan to feature original articles about British indie comics.
Time Bomb Comics chief, Steve Tanner, spoke about his hopes for the new comic and for the decision to make Quantum a title mainly available through the distribution channels that were once traditionally used to reach comics readers but which most comics publishers now avoid:
I think the response to Spectrum being on sale in WHSmith’s made us realise that there’s a whole readership out there that don’t buy comics online, at conventions or even comic shops. Quantum is what we’ve produced for those readers, but we’re hoping that a lot of our existing readers will come along for the ride – via their newsagent, of course!”
Quantum importantly also marks a new stage in Time Bomb’s story, with Steve stating, that Quantum is, “a first step; some of the things we have planned long-term as part of the Quantum project are things that genuinely haven’t been done before. Not just by an indie UK comics publisher. Not by any comics publisher. Ever.
The new bimonthly title aimed at the newsagent audience has that great-looking cover from David Morris and Ben Lopez featuring some of the characters you’ll be seeing inside the 52-page, full-colour title.
What’s In Store
Here is a preview of the line-up for Quantum #1, with details of the creative teams involved and what to expect from the story.
Major Rakhana: Pax Galactica Part One, written by Steve Tanner, artist Pete Woods, colourist Dan Harris, letterer Rob Jones.
The idea behind Major Rakhana is she’s a steampunk space ace – a Victorian Dan Dare figure, but a little more vicious than Dan ever was. And of course, because it’s a steampunk setting you can have fun with Rakhana’s environment, and present it in a way that would make perfect sense in the late 1800s. I created Major Rakhana with artist Pete Woods (for Time Bomb’s Brawler). In the Brawler short stories Rakhana comes across as pretty much the alpha in the pack. Pax Galactica is her first multi-part serial, reintroducing the character for Quantum readers as she and her beloved Brittanic Empire faces a larger threat than ever before.
Steve Tanner, Writer
WesterNoir: Moon Cursed Part One, written and lettered by Dave West, artist Joseph Parangue, colourist Matt Soffe.
The frontier of the old west brought all manner of folk. Those looking to carve a new, and better, life from the new world and those only looking to escape the life they left behind. For some of these however the distance was not great enough and their past soon caught up with them. WesterNoir was created by myself and Gary Crutchley, inspired by the old western movies we watched growing up and given a twist of horror to take the typical western anti-hero into a world where monsters exist, to be hunted and to hunt. Moon Cursed takes that in a whole new direction.
Dave West, Writer
Memphis, written, drawn and lettered by David Morris.
It’s a sci-fi adventure set in a universe where Egypt continued to flourish under the Ptolemaic Dynasty, leading to a magnificent world of art, culture and technology. Although there were periods of upheaval the empire remained relatively stable, allowing science and technology, art and culture to flourish. The once powerful Pharaoh has suffered a stroke and is unable to rule, with his daughter’s succession undermined by powerful factions and ancient sects, and worse, a resurrected god returning to begin a second Age of Chaos.
David Morris, Creator
Whatever Happened to the World’s Fastest Man? Part One,written by Dave West, artist Marleen Lowe, letterer Andy Bloor.
If you had a super power what would you do with it? Would you dress up in spandex and haunt the rooftops at night or would you just try to live your life as normally as you could? Originally presented as part of Accent UK’s Blessed/Cursed range of books which focus on the fact that for each positive outcome of having a super power there is always the negative, this tells the story of Bobby Doyle, the decisions he makes and the consequences of doing so.”
Dave West, Writer
The Clockwork Cavalier, written by Steve Tanner, artist Ed Machiavello, colourist Dan Harris, letterer Bolt-01.
The concept behind the Clockwork Cavalier is wonderfully daft: a mechanical man drafted into the Bow Street Runners to fight crime in 18th Century London! The Clockwork Cavalier made his debut in Flintlock Book One back in 2016, and Quantum number one reprints that complete story, but now in full colour as opposed to the original black and white. We figured that the majority of Quantum’s readers wouldn’t have encountered the Cavalier before, so what better introduction to Time Bomb’s popular Clockwork Conundrum?”
Steve Tanner, Writer
Quantum will be available in retail newsagents and select comic shops in late April and will have new issues available every two months.
