These are Geeky Brummie’s picks of the comics available today from your local comic book store including X-Men: Grand Design – Xtinction, The Wild Storm and Star Wars. Title: X-Men: Grand Design – X-Tinction
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Issue No.: 1
Creative Team: Ed Piskor – Writer, Artist, Cover Artist & Variant Cover Artist
Ed Piskor’s look at the entire history of the X-Men has been a masterclass in comics. Each issue has been a joy to behold. We are now into the final couple of issues and it should be epic. If you’re a fan of the X-Men you owe it to yourself to pick up this comic and relive all the classic moments of X-History as told by a true comics master.
From the Publisher:
“The series that has critics and fans raving returns for its final installment! The ruination of the X-Men revisited! Re-live the now-classic storylines like Mutant Massacre and The Fall of the Mutants. With appearances by Longshot, Cable, and The Marauders! Created soup to nuts by comic book superstar Ed Piskor in the Mighty Marvel Manner!“
Title: The Wild Storm
Publisher: DC Comics
Issue No.: 23
Creative Team: Warren Ellis – Writer : Jon Davis-Hunt – Artist & Cover Artist
I’ve been a fan of this book since issue one and here we are at the penultimate issue. I’ve featured it heavily in my comics picks and if not for X-Men: Grand Design this would have been comic of the week. Ellis and Davis-Hunt have been producing one of the most consistently brilliant comics in years. Just buy it.
From the Publisher:
“The storm of accidents, deaths, mistakes, confusion and anger has led to this. Miles Craven has lost his grip and Henry Bendix has lost his mind. Angie Spica’s journey is ending. And so is life on Earth.“
Title: Star Wars
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Issue No.: 108
Creative Team: Matthew Rosenberg – Writer : Luke Ross – Artist : Kerry Gammill – Artist : Guiseppe Camuncoli – Artist : Andrea Broccardo – Artist : John Tyler Christopher, Michael Golden, Carmine Infantino – Variant Cover Artists
I read a lot of the original Marvel Star Wars stories when they were reprint in the UK Star Wars Weekly. They were astounding stories that filled in the years between films in an age before VHS and DVD. They certainly channelled space faring adventures in the vein of Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. I’ve recently picked up the Marvel Epic collections of those comics and they are filled with awesome stories, characters and art – most of which goes against everything that was to come in the movies. In a special edition of the new Marvel Star Wars series we take a trip back to those days as they pick up the numbering of that original run. This is one of Marvel’s 80th Anniversary comics and it’ll be great to see those Legend-era characters especially Jaxxon and Valance The Hunter.
From the Publisher:
“THE ALL-NEW NEXT ISSUE TO THE ORIGINAL MARVEL STAR WARS SERIES! A long time ago on a spinner rack far, far away…STAR WARS comics were a LOT different than they are now! With wild and intricately plotted storylines, MARVEL’s historic original run introduced an array of unique heroes and villains to play alongside GEORGE LUCAS’s incredibly popular science-fantasy characters. In celebration of MARVEL’S 80TH ANNIVERSARY, this Legends-era sequel to legendary comic book writer Archie Goodwin’s “Crimson Forever” reunites HAN SOLO, LUKE SKYWALKER, PRINCESS LEIA, CHEWBACCA, C-3PO and R2-D2 with JAXXON, AMAIZA FOXTRAIN, DOMINA TAGGE and VALANCE THE HUNTER in a galaxy-threatening, nostalgic roller coaster! STRAP YOURSELVES IN!“
Round Up
Also out this week are some other comics I recommend you take a look at including Doomsday Clock #10, The Immortal Hulk #18, Rick and Morty #50, Star Trek Year Five #2 and Batman: Last Knight on Earth #1..
