Hello! Welcome to the latest Geeky Brummie Games Release Roundup!
This week, two Sony exclusive shooters battle for attention.
Another quiet week for games, although a relatively busy one for Sony. Of course, there’s not much here if you don’t own a PlayStation but what can you do?
New Releases
Clem (PC, Switch) is a small indie point and click about a makeshift doll, brought to life by a mysterious voice. Expect a lot of spooky exploration and an intriguing story.
Helldivers II (PC, PS5) is the sequel to 2015’s Helldivers, shifting that game’s top-down perspective into full third-person shooter territory. You play as elite squads of intergalactic soldiers, heading down to dangerous planets to fight bug-like aliens. Think Starship Troopers in video game form, basically.
Game of the Week
Game of the Week this week is Foamstars (PlayStation), a multiplayer shooter released as part of this month’s PlayStation Plus games.
Look, I didn’t expect to do this, but it happened. Square Enix’s suspiciously Splatoon-like shooter made it to Game of the Week. I fully expected to be cynical about this one, but I tried it out and…it’s good? What?
Okay, there is plenty to be cynical about, mostly in the excessive monetisation, but the core gameplay is surprisingly solid. It takes a lot of the fun of Splatoon and builds on it with a more aggressive main mode and uses the foam concept as a way to shape the terrain to your benefit.
I’ve been having a lot of fun with Foamstars and as such, it’s hard not to award it Game of the Week.
