Hello! Welcome to the latest Geeky Brummie Games Release Roundup!
This week, Nazis. I hate these guys.
It’s the last roundup of the year! This is because next week will be the annual roundup of the Top 50 Most Notable Games of the Year, and I have top men working out the calculations on that list right now. But for now, we have a quiet yet still pretty good list to end the year, especially with this week’s Game of the Week. I believe you’ll agree I’ve chosen wisely.
Re-Releases and Ports
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver I+II Remastered brings two classic games to all modern systems after a long absence. The two Soul Reaver games focus on a vampire named Raziel, turned into a soul-eating ghoul after centuries of agonising torture, as he seeks revenge on his former clan master, Kain. The two games are Tomb Raider style adventures where you can shift between two planes of reality on a whim. Very happy to see them back on modern systems.
Early Access
Path of Exile 2 is the major Early Access release recently, although while my dates list had it down for this week, it appears to have released last week. That said, the original Path of Exile was a dense CRPG that gave Diablo a severe run for its money, and this sequel promises even more of what made the original great.
New Releases
From indie collection masters Digital Eclipse comes a different kind of retro revival. Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind (PC, PlayStation, Switch, Xbox) is a side-scrolling brawler based on the original Power Rangers series from the 90s. Occasionally the action is broken up with pseudo-Mode-7 shooting sections too. Looks like a fun time.
Fairy Tail 2 (PC, PlayStation, Switch) is the second part of the grand sprawling RPG adaptation of the popular manga about a guild of battle mages. This sequel sees the Fairy Tail guild go up against a crew of bizarre mages in order to take down an immortal tyrant. I played this one for a review and it’s generally pretty good, although I highly recommend not playing it on Switch.
Game of the Week
Game of the Week is Indiana Jones & The Great Circle (PC, Xbox X/S), a game I am desperate to play but will be waiting for its PS5 release early next year.
It’s Indiana Jones! The world’s greatest archaeologist sets out on another adventure to find various sites along a mythical Great Circle that spans the world. Along the way you’ll find yourself not just battling Nazis but also the fascist Italian blackshirts in a race to prevent fascism from obtained this mythical power.
I love a good pulp adventure and you can’t get much better than Indiana Jones, so that alone has me excited for this. The fact it’s made by Wolfenstein studio MachineGames already puts it on a solid footing, but every review also says it’s a perfect blend of Dishonored and Hitman, where clumsily making it up as you go, occasionally hitting a Nazi with a guitar, is the way forward. Everyone who’s played it is raving about it, so how can I not make it the final Game of the Week of 2024?
