Hello! Welcome to the latest Geeky Brummie Games Release Roundup!
This week, I Can’t Believe It’s Not Jet Set Radio, Leatherface and swashbuckling.
There are so many cool looking games this week, I almost struggled to pick a Game of the Week. I didn’t actually struggle because I knew, deep down, exactly what I was going to pick due to how long I’ve been wanting to play it. But there were definitely some real contenders this week.
I mean, look at the lineup! There’s a game all about dashing swashbuckler swordfighting! I’m down for some of that! Also, a stealth strategy game about ghost pirates? I’m intrigued! There’s also some interesting narrative adventures featuring Jules Verne and witches (not at the same time). But let’s be real here, I was never going to pick anything other than a game whose entire premise is We Made Jet Set Radio 3 Ourselves Because Sega Are Cowards.
New Releases
While I might not understand its appeal myself, Vampire Survivors continues to take the world by storm, and now launches on Switch this week. Now with added couch co-op!
Releasing in Early Access, Wayfinder (PC, PlayStation) is an online RPG about people known as Wayfinders, who venture into dangerous territory to get loot. Frankly, one of the most generic games I’ve ever seen.
Verne: The Shape of Fantasy (PC) is a point-and-click adventure where you play as Jules Verne in a steampunk world inspired by his works. You will travel under the sea to find the lost city of Atlantis and uncover its secrets. Looks neat!
Gord (PC, PS5, Xbox X/S) is a grim strategy survival game set in a world inspired by Slavic folklore. Sanity management is key to success in this game, as the horrors of the world can take a toll on its cast. Hopefully unlike the acid reflux condition it shares a name with, it won’t leave a bad taste in your mouth.
If you’re seeing everyone enjoying the heck out of Baldur’s Gate 3 but your computer is a potato? Hammerwatch II (PC) might be the answer. It’s a retro throwback RPG promising high adventure and plenty of action.
The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood (PC, Switch) is a narrative adventure game about witches. You get to make complex choices, build tarot cards for divination purposes and hear a witch talk about her five-minute orgasms. I’m not joking, it’s right there on the Steam page.
TinyBuild are still desperate to make Hello Neighbor a viable franchise, despite the fact that none of the games are particularly good. And now, they’ve turned the janky horror game into…uh…a construction game? Hello Engineer (PC, PlayStation, Switch, Xbox) is a game that no one asked for but it certainly exists.
Moving Out 2 (PC, PlayStation, Switch, Xbox) is the second outing for the Team 17’s house moving party game. Think Overcooked! but with more sofas going through windows and you have a good idea of what to expect.
En Garde! (PC) is a game about swashbuckling and sword fighting. You play as Adalia de Volador, an adventurer seeking to take down the Count Duke. Expect plenty of parries, ripostes and smart use of the scenery as improvised weaponry. This game looks a lot of fun and, as I stated, was a real contender for Game of the Week.
Speaking of swashbuckling, Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew (PC, PS5, Xbox X/S) is Desperados III via Pirates of the Caribbean. You play as a cursed pirate crew heading out in search of treasure, glory and adventure. Expect a lot of strategic stealth gameplay that developer Mimimi have built a reputation for. Also a Game of the Week contender.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (PC, PlayStation, Xbox) is an asymmetric multiplayer horror game based on the movie of the same name. Play as a survivor or a killer from across the franchise and either survive or murder everyone. It’s Dead By Daylight with less Nic Cage, or more aptly, it’s exactly the Friday the 13th game that came out a few years ago but with a different license.
Game of the Week
Game of the Week this week is Bomb Rush Cyberfunk (PC, Switch) which is what happens when developers get tired of waiting for Sega to make a new Jet Set Radio and decide to do it themselves.
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is Jet Set Radio 3 in all but name. It’s a game about extreme sports, graffiti, a dystopian future city hounded by youths from the 1990s and a Hideki Naganuma soundtrack. It’s even got the blocky cel-shaded art style we all know and love.
Look, Jet Set Radio is exactly my vibe. It’s the same reason Hi-Fi Rush and Splatoon are held so highly in my mind. I love me some 90s-inspired beats and clothes combined with cartoony visuals. Plus Jet Set Radio had some fun rollerblading gameplay, which this has expanded on with BMX and skateboarding. So to see an indie team decided to do their own take so hard they even hired the original composer has had me excited from the moment the project was first announced. I am honestly still amazed it’s releasing this week. I need this game injected into my veins.
