Hello! Welcome to the latest Geeky Brummie Games Release Roundup!
This week, Zelda, detectives and the entire history of the world.
Re-Releases and Ports
Worms Armageddon: Anniversary Edition (PS5, Switch, Xbox X/S) is a remaster of the classic quirky turn-based multiplayer game to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The package has been produced by Digital Eclipse, meaning their usual standards of documentary and preservation are present, including an interactive museum and the inclusion of the Game Boy version of the game.
Epic Mickey: Rebrushed (PC, PlayStation, Switch, Xbox) is a remake of the 2010 Wii game, where Mickey Mouse journeyed through a wasteland of Disney history. So if you want to fight Pete as a Tron guy with a camera that isn no longer completely terrible, now’s your best opportunity!
In a surprise announcement, Palworld also turned up on PS5 this week, just as Nintendo hit the game with a lawsuit. Brilliant timing.
Early Access
The first of this week’s Early Access releases is #Drive Rally, a rally racing game featuring a cartoony aesthetic and heavily inspired by the races of the 90s. There’s also a large focus on unique co-drivers who act as your cheerleader.
Developed by Pixel Perfect Dude.
Realm of Ink is basically ukiyo-e Hades, where a swordswoman known as Red discovers that her life is being governed by a pre-determined destiny. She now sets out, complete with the power of the Fox, to break free of this destiny and gain control of her own future.
Developed by Leap Studio.
Greedfall 2: The Dying World is a prequel to the original Eurojank RPG Greedfall, set three years before and starring a native of the continent the cast of the first game were heading to. Expect more of the first game, with all the expected RPG trappings with a lower budget charm.
Developed by Spiders (Steelrising, The Technomancer, Of Orcs and Men) and published by Nacon (Robocop: Rogue City, Crown Wars: The Black Prince, Vampire the Masquerade: Swansong).
New Releases
Tiny Glade (PC) is a toy similar to Townscaper or Summerhouse, where the goal is to simply build stuff. You basically have free reign to build little settlements in a cosy woodland, with a huge range of tools at your disposal. There are no limits, no rules and no time limits, only vibes.
Developed by Pounce Light.
Mouthwashing (PC) is an utterly weird horror game set on a spaceship that’s slowly dying. Low poly visuals and surreal imagery abound as the crew refuse to fully expire. Not sure why it’s called Mouthwashing though.
Developed by Wrong Organ (How Fish is Made) and published by Critical Reflex (Buckshot Roulette, Arctic Eggs, Aeon Drive).
Bloomtown: A Different Story (PC, PlayStation, Switch, Xbox) is an RPG that combines social elements like farming and fishing with a dark story about a demon underworld that threatens the protagonist’s cozy town. You play as a girl named Emily as she battles demons and works to save her town from destruction.
Developed by Lazy Bear Games (Bandle Tale, Graveyard Keeper) and Different Sense Games and published by Twin Sails Interactive (News Tower, Ember Knights, Wantless: Solace at World’s End).
All You Need is Help (PC, PS5, Switch, Xbox X/S) is a co-op puzzle game where you must learn to work together to navigate your sentient puzzle pieces into their appropriate shapes. Looks silly in all the best ways.
Developed by Q-Games (PixelJunk series, Nom Nom Galaxy).
Leaving Early Access this week, Shadows of Doubt (PC, PS5, Xbox X/S) is a detective game where the mystery is procedurally generated out of a cast of shady characters in a moody 1980s city. It’s an ambitious work that got a lot of attention during Early Access that’s worth checking out.
Developed by ColePowered Games and published by Fireshine Games (Core Keeper, Gestalt: Steam and Cinder, KeyWe).
Ara: History Untold (PC) is Microsoft’s attempt to step on Civilization’s toes. You lead a nation to glory, although where this differs from 2K’s franchise includes a non-linear tech tree and unique turn mechanics.
Developed by Oxide Games and published by Xbox Game Studios.
Game of the Week
Game of the Week is The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (Switch), the first actual Zelda game.
Note that wasn’t italicised, because when I say Zelda, I mean the princess. In Echoes of Wisdom you finally get to play as the titular character in a game that wasn’t made for the Philips CD-i and therefore ejected from history by Nintendo. Link has disappeared into a mysterious rift and Zelda is the only one who can save him and the rest of Hyrule, using a special magic wand.
This may be a hot take, but The Legend of Zelda is always a good time. Shocking, I know. But seeing Zelda in a starring role is a nice change of pace for the series, as is a stronger focus on puzzle-solving and creativity built around the wand mechanic. The visuals are straight out of the Link’s Awakening remake too, which is no bad thing. In conclusion, an easy Game of the Week contender.
Developed by Grezzo (The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (remake), Ever Oasis, Miitopia) and published by Nintendo.
