Hello! Welcome to the latest Geeky Brummie Games Release Roundup!
This week, an accidental Asian special.
It’s a quiet week in terms of quantity, as only three games are on my list. Surprisingly though, they’re all notable games from Asian studios, each coming from a different country. We have one of Japan’s longest-running game studios, one of Korea’s biggest publishers and arguably the most notable Chinese developer of the last few years all releasing high profile games this week.
Apart from that, there’s not a lot else going on besides these games. Clearly the Elden Ring DLC is scaring everyone off for a few weeks, as we won’t see much improvement next week either.
New Releases
The First Descendant (PC, PlayStation, Xbox) is a free-to-play looter shooter about special operatives fighting against an invading force. Players can choose from a range of characters with unique abilities, combining their strengths with other players in order to take down huge boss enemies. This one’s been getting a lot of promo thanks to shows like Summer Game Fest although the reaction to the actual game has been a little mixed.
Developed by Korean studio Nexon (Dungeon & Fighter, Blue Archive, Dave the Diver).
This week sees the long-awaited English localisation of The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak (PC, PlayStation, Switch), the 14th game in the Trails series and the 19th in the overall Legend of Heroes franchise. It’s considered to be the start of the second half of the Trails story, set on a new continent with a new cast of characters. You play as Van Arkride, a bounty hunter detective taking on a case from the president’s daughter. I honestly don’t know a lot about the Trails series aside from it having a lot of games, so I have no real idea what else to say about this one.
Developed by long-running Japanese studio Nihon Falcom (Ys series, The Legend of Heroes series) and published by NIS America (Atelier series, Disgaea series)
Game of the Week
Game of the Week is Zenless Zone Zero (PC, PS5, Mobile), the new game from MiHoYo.
Much like MiHoYo’s previous games, Zenless Zone Zero is a gacha game about collecting your favourite anime girls (and occasionally guys) as you venture on a sprawling quest. This one’s much more cyberpunk than their previous efforts, set in a post-apocalyptic world where the remnants of humanity form factions to fight against Ethereal, strange creatures that have emerged from mysterious portals.
I’m not normally one to celebrate the gacha genre, but after Honkai: Star Rail, I think it’s safe to say I trust MiHoYo to make something good out of it. I’ve played a little bit of it and the brash, rebellious tone and light Devil May Cry style combat are huge plus points for me. I think it has potential to join their previous games as something distinctly them, yet entirely its own thing.
Developed by popular Chinese developers MiHoYo (Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail).
