The Geeky Brummie Pull List with Beware the Planet of the Apes
Happy New Year, and welcome the first Pull List of 2024. This week we have 10 new comics for you. Remember, because of the holidays, new comics may be a day or two later to appear on comic shop shelves, so be patient. Our Comic of the Week title is Beware the Planet of the Apes from Marvel Comics. The other 4 comics on the main pull list are published by DC Comics and Marvel Comics. Our On The Radar selection includes 5 new comics from DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Dynamite, Dark Horse Comics and Image Comics. And in MEANWHILE… we bid farewell to the legendary John M. Burns.
If you want to send any comics or details of any comic related events we should feature, feel free to reach out to me at keith@geekybrummie.com or comics@geekybrummie.com
Now on with the comics…
Beware the Planet of the Apes
Issue 1
Marvel Comics
Script – Marc Guggenheim
Art – Alvaro López
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Beware The Planet of the Apes #1 (Link)
INTO THE FORBIDDEN ZONE! In a hostile world run by aggressive gorillas, scientists Cornelius and Zira are the only apes alive who see value in the mute, dumb human race—but even they know human capabilities have severe limits. So when their nephew Lucius goes missing, it is with great trepidation that they turn to a human ally, a young woman who will someday earn the moniker “Nova”… Steeped in a love for the classic tales, Marc Guggenheim and Álvaro López‘s series will take the Planet of the Apes legacy to explosive new heights—and it all starts here!
I really enjoyed Marvel’s first POTA series but I’m really excited to see them returning to the classic films timeline. I hope that this is the series that will inspire people to check out the original movies as it still holds up even after 55 years.
Birds of Prey
Issue 5
DC Comics
Script – Kelly Thompson
Art – Arist Deyn
Letters – Clayton Cowles
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Birds of Prey #5 (Link)
CAN THE BIRDS AND THE AMAZONS SAVE SIN? As the Birds and the Amazons double their efforts in fighting Megaera, Dinah and Sin take the battle inside, quite literally. The battle for the fate of Sin has now truly begun and it is not something everyone is gonna walk away from.
Time for a guest artist. This series is a fabulous read and I hope the use of a guest artist doesn’t distract from what has been a great story to date.
Shazam!
Issue 7
Marvel Comics
Script – Mark Waid
Art – Goran Sudžuka
Colours – Ive Svorcina
Letters – Troy Peteri
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Shazam! #7 (Link)
THE CAPTAIN VS. BLACK ADAM! The match you’ve been waiting for: the Captain versus Black Adam! Who will wield the thunder…and who will ultimately be crowned the Champion of Shazam?!
Waid continues as Mora steps away and we begin a selection of guest artists to finish out the run. Again, like Birds of Prey it’s a little disappointing to have the artist change so soon as I would have loved to see Mora handle the Captain’s, sorry Shazam’s, battle with Black Adam.
Fall of the House of X
Issue 1
Marvel Comics
Script – Gerry Duggan
Art – Lucas Werneck
Colours – Bryan Valenza
Letters – Clayton Cowles
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Fall of the House of X #1 (Link)
KRAKOA HAS JUST BEGUN TO FIGHT! Mutantkind has never had a greater fall. From the highs of Krakoa—their own glorious nation, a place where they were safe and happy—to the lowest of lows. Outlawed, hunted, killed, most of their kind missing or dead, and now, one their greatest leaders, Cyclops, is on trial facing a death penalty. Ready or not, the time has come for the X-Men to make their final stand against the forces that have struck them low. The day is now. The place is here. The tale of the house Xavier built will long be told…and few will forget this darkest chapter. From writer Gerry Duggan (X-MEN, MARAUDERS, UNCANNY AVENGERS) and artist Lucas Werneck (IMMORTAL X-MEN, X-MEN: THE TRIAL OF MAGNETO) comes half of the story that will bring the Krakoa Age to its conclusion!
This is it, the first part of the story that draws everything Jonathan Hickman began to its conclusion. How will X-Men fans feel once it’s all over?
The Amazing Spider-Man
Issue 41
Marvel Comics
Script – Zeb Wells
Art – John Romita Jr. and Scott Hanna
Colours – Marcio Menyz
Letters – Joe Caramagna
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – The Amazing Spider-Man #41 (Link)
GANG WAR CONTINUES! With all of New York’s super underworld fighting for dominance, you didn’t think Wilson Fisk, the former Kingpin of Crime, would sit it out, did you?
LEGACY #935
Gang War continues, but I’m really here for the ROM Spaceknight variant cover.
On the Radar, these are comics I’ve not got on my physical Pull List, but are books I’ll pick up digitally or in trades:
Fantastic Four #15
Marvel Comics
Script – Ryan North
Art – Ivan Fiorelli
Colours – Jesus Aburtov
Letters – Joe Caramagna
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Fantastic Four #15 (Link)
I was created by mistake: a mind of minds, spread out across the vast swath of humanity, unseen but strong, stronger still every day. The world was confusing, but I learned. I grew. And then the Fantastic Four, the world’s greatest heroes—themselves led by the world’s smartest man—tried to kill me. They failed. But they showed me they were a threat. They showed me I needed to defend myself. They showed me that the Fantastic Four needed to die. And as I strengthen my control over the world, Reed Richards, Susan Storm, Ben Grimm, Johnny Storm and Alicia Masters will soon learn there’s nowhere they can hide…
LEGACY #708
Gargoyles #11
Dynamite
Script – Greg Weisman
Art – George Kambadais
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Gargoyles #11 (Link)
With the Manhattan Clan back together again, Brooklyn and Katana ask Broadway, Lexington, and Angela to stand as their Seconds during the all-important Commitment Ceremony. The Clan has never felt stronger – which is a good thing, because a desperate Dino Dracon is about to make one last play to take over all of New York City!
Love Everlasting #11
Image Comics
Script – Tom King
Art – Elsa Charretier
Colours – Matt Hollingsworth
Letters – Clayton Cowles
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Love Everlasting #11 (Link)
The answers are here in this eye-opening new arc of the Eisner and Harvey-nominated series! Since issue one, Joan has been hunted and haunted by the Cowboy. Now, we travel west and explore his origins as we discover a huge clue to why Joan is trapped inside this strange world of love and violence.
Superman ’78: The Metal Curtain #3
DC Comics
Script – Robert Venditti
Art – Gavin Guidry
Colours – Jordie Bellaire
Letters – Dave Lanphear
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Superman ’78: The Metal Curtain #3 (Link)
WHO BUILT METALLO? THIS LOOKS LIKE A JOB FOR…LOIS LANE! THE SUPERMAN ’78 SAGA CONTINUES IN THIS NEW SERIES! Superman is in bad shape after the beating he took from Metallo, but questions need answers. How did the Russians build his suit, and where did his Kryptonite come from? And when it comes to getting answers, the Man of Steel knows just who to turn to: intrepid reporter Lois Lane!
Giant Robot Hellboy #3
Dark Horse Comics
Script – Mike Mignola
Art – Duncan Fegredo
Colours – Dave Stewart
Letters – Clem Robins
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Giant Robot Hellboy #3 (Link)
Giant Robot Hellboy goes rogue, leaving both the island and the laboratory in explosive chaos! Inspired by Mignola’s viral-hit pencil drawings from Mike Mignola: The Quarantine Sketchbook, Giant Robot Hellboy gets his own story in this 3-part miniseries from Mignola and longtime Hellboy artist Duncan Fegredo!
In Memoriam: John M. Burns
It has been reported this week that the legendary British comic artist John M. Burns passed away on the 29th December 2023, aged 86.
I first discovered John’s work in the pages of Countdown, and then in TV Action, Look-In and 2000AD. He illustrated the strips of my favourite TV shows at the time, UFO, The Tomorrow People, Space: 1999 and many, many more. His drawings of the Eagle transporter were ones I copied in copious sketchbooks.
Throughout his prolific career he has illuminated some of the UK’s most well know newspaper comic strips, including Modesty Blaze, Eartha, Danielle, The Seekers and Jane. More recently for 2000AD he has drawn Judge Dredd, the hugely popular Nikolai Dante and The Order.
John M. Burns style was distinctive and utterly unique and he will be missed by the comic community of the UK and beyond. The whole Geeky Brummie Team would like to offer our condolences and to John’s family and friends.
