The Geeky Brummie Pull List with Crypt of Shadows
It’s a full sweep for Marvel in the Pull List this week starting off with our Comic Of The Week, the one-shot horror special, Crypt of Shadows. Also on the Pull List we have the first issue of Miracleman: The Silver Age, which was very nearly my pick of the week, and the latest issues of Predator and X-Men. In our On The Radar selection, we have 5 new comics, The Silver Coin and Public Domain from Image Comics, Defenders Beyond from Marvel Comics, Fables from DC Black Label and Shaolin Cowboy: Cruel To Be Kin from Dark Horse Comics. And in MEANWHILE… we have two UK indie comics projects for you to back on Kickstarter.
If you want to send any comics or comic related events we should feature, feel free to reach out to me at keith@geekybrummie.com.
Now on with the comics…

THE CRYPT OF SHADOWS / WEREWOLF BY MOON KNIGHT / DOWN CAME THE RAIN / NEITHER BIG NOR BAD / SKIN CRAWL / ENDLESS SLAUGHTER IN THE INFINITE SWAMP
The heroes of the Marvel Universe spend most of their time in the bright sun, flying high above it all…but every once in a while, they venture into the darkness that lurks in the hidden corners of the world. There lurk the creatures, the monsters, the vampires…the ones who prey on innocence and goodness. Join us, and some of your favorite heroes, for tales of fangs, claws and silent, stalking swamp creatures to celebrate All Hallows’ Eve!
Back in the 70s and early 80s I used to love the Marvel and DC horror comics. As a kid in the UK reprints of Tomb of Dracula, Man-Thing, Werewolf by Night, Swamp Thing and others, looked incredible in black and white, this was in the days before colour reproductions. So I couldn’t resist making this spooky season one-shot my comic of the week. The recent Werewolf by Night TV Special (which I haven’t watched yet, I’m saving it for closer to Halloween, but has been spoiled slightly by the interwebs), has introduced a new audience to these wonderful characters, so I hope this special issue takes me back to those autumn nights of spooky tales but now with added colour.
Miracleman: The Silver Age
Issue 1
Marvel Comics
Writer – Neil Gaiman
Artist – Mark Buckingham
Colourists – Jordie Bellaire and Matt Brooker (D’Israeli)
Letterer – Todd Klein

THE SECRET ORIGIN OF YOUNG MIRACLEMAN
“THE SILVER AGE” BEGINS AGAIN! After thirty years, Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham’s unfinished storyline “The Silver Age” begins again!
Young Miracleman – the lost member of the Miracleman Family – is back! His last memories were of a 1963 world of joy and innocence. Now, he’s been thrust into the 21st century, where his best friends have become gods and monsters. Remastered with stunning new artwork by Mark Buckingham! Including material originally presented in Miracleman (1985) #23, plus bonus content.
Very nearly my comic of the week, Miracleman is a comic I am looking forward to. I have followed this character since I first encountered him in the pages of Warrior magazine, and now we are finally going to see the end of the adventure that began all those years ago. I loved the recent #0 issue, which set the stage nicely for what is to come, and it’s great to see Gaiman and Buckingham final get to bring this home.
Predator
Issue 3
Marvel Comics
Writer – Ed Brisson
Artist – Kev Walker
Colourist – Frank D’Armata
Letterer – Clayton Cowles
Buy on Comixology – Predator #3 (Link)
Theta is ambushed by a Predator! But is this the Predator that she’s been tracking all these years? And without her weaponry, is she prepared to take it on one-on-one?
I’m mostly here for the excellent art of Kev Walker, who doesn’t get as much praise as he deserves, but I’ve been enjoying the story, which reminds me of those early Dark Horse Comics tales. It seems my comic choices are heavily influenced by nostalgia this week.
X-Men
Issue 16
Marvel Comics
Writer – Gerry Duggan
Artist – Joshua Cassara
Colourist – Marte Gracia
Letterer – Clayton Cowles
Buy on Comixology – X-Men #16 (Link)
FORGING A WAY AHEAD! Forge has a secret mission that he’s been working on for the Quiet Council for some time. Now that he’s been elected to be one of the X-Men, it’s time to put it into action…even if it does break some of the laws of Krakoa.
No Judgement Day tie-in this issue, with Forge taking centre stage and that cover looks creepy as hell.
On the radar this week some other comics not on the Pull List but well worth checking out:
The Silver Coin #15
Image Comics
Writer and Artist – Michael Walsh
Buy on Comixology – The Silver Coin #15 (Link)
We first met Louis in 1978 at the scene of a concert fire where he found the Silver Coin. Then we saw him shortly after, at that diner that went up in flames. And again some years later, dead after a home invasion. So how did the ill-fated firefighter spend his time with the coin? Or rather: how did the coin spend him?
Public Domain #5
Image Comics
Writer and Artist – Chip Zdarsky
Buy on Comixology – Public Domain #5 (Link)
After the bombshell revelation of the last issue, can the Dallas family come together to start this wild new chapter in their lives? Join CHIP ZDARSKY (Batman) as he teams up with hot new artist CHIP ZDARSKY (Detective Comics) on this hot new issue!
Defenders Beyond #4
Marvel Comics
Writer – Al Ewing
Artist – Javier Rodriguez
Letterer – Joe Caramagna
Buy on Comixology – Defenders Beyond #4 (Link)
DA’AT: THE LAND OF COULDN’T-BE-SHOULDN’T-BE
On their quest to save reality itself, the Defenders have stared down the Beyonder and survived the scorching flames of the Phoenix, but now Loki and Co. must face their greatest threat yet—themselves! The Defenders find themselves in a plane of possibility, where they are haunted by visions of the lives they wish they could have—if only, the dream weaver warns, they didn’t have the others holding them back! Will they turn against each other? Or accept closing those doors?
Fables #156
DC Black Label
Writer – Bill Willingham
Artists – Mark Buckingham and Steve Leialoha
Colourist – Lee Loughridge
Letterer – Todd Klein
Buy on Comixology – Fables #156 (Link)
THE BLACK FOREST, CHAPTER SIX: THE TINKER BELL DILEMMA
Connor Wolf has taken a shine to a wandering hero who has plans to teach Connor all he knows. They’ll make daring rescues and slay monsters, but when the pair comes across Old Sam in the Black Forest, Connor discovers that his mentor’s sense of adventure has a cruel streak. Plus, a French bistro in New York becomes a dueling ground as Greenjack makes a dramatic entrance to square off against Pan.
Shaolin Cowboy: Cruel To Be Kin #6
Dark Horse Comics
Writer and Artist – Geof Darrow
Colourist – Dave Stewart
Buy on Comixology – Shaolin Cowboy: Cruel To Be Kin #6 (Link)
The SCU has never had a supply chain problem with action, and this penultimate issue is no different as it delivers a two-fisted riposte to the evil of Big Daddy Snell and his ever-evolving manifestation of hate and intolerance. This one will slap your eyeballs silly!!!
Harker in Colour
After bringing the previous three volumes of the original black and white Harker into glorious colour, those fine folks over at Timebomb Comics are about to launch the second part of Harker – The Black Hound.
The campaign is due to begin shortly, so make sure you don’t miss it by registering your interest on the Kickstarter page: Harker – The Black Hound Part Two (Link)
Bring a Hammer to a Hell Fight
With just under a week to go, our other Kickstarter selection is I Took A Hammer To Hell by Matt Garvey Mulele Jarvis and Fabi Marques. This action and gore filled comic looks amazing and if you back now, you are guaranteed to get the digital awards BEFORE October 31st, just the thing for Halloween. I’ll hand you over to Matt for the pitch and some preview pages from this first issue.
THE PITCH
Jake made deal with the devil for his eternal soul (original I know, but wait till you read it, this is VERY different) but instead of waiting till his time is up or trying to wiggle out of the agreement, he goes to Hell WILLINGLY!
Why on Earth would someone do this?!… Well, he has only one goal in mind.
With nothing more than a MASSIVE hammer duck taped to his hand, Jake is going to kill the devil!
This comic has action, it has gore…but it also has a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
So, F#@K REDEMPTION…EMBRACE VENGENCE!
You won’t be disappointed!
You can find out more and back this great looking comic by heading over to the official Kickstarter campaign page, which includes some rather excellent rewards – I Took A Hammer To Hell (Link)
