EIGHT ROM-COM-INSPIRED NEW STORIES ABOUT LOVE—AND TRYING TO FIND IT—IN THE DC UNIVERSE! Romance is rarely a simple affair—love is almost always followed by some sort of conflict. Whether you’re Plastic Man twisting yourself into knots trying to please someone, or the Flash traveling back in time to make a catastrophic 50 first dates perfect, or even a lonely robot who just can’t seem to find love unless it’s mail from a computer screen, like Red Tornado, love actually is…a pain in the 27 dresses. So in the grand tradition of these dating conundrums a la rom-coms of the ’90s and ’00s, we are proud to present eight new stories about love and trying to find it in this zany world.
Just in time for Valentines Day, comes this collection of romantic stories from across the DC Universe. Obviously I was won over by the title and cover, who can resist the charms of Guy Gardner, but this book promises to be more than just that. I like that DC are happy to embrace these silly and charming issues, often featuring characters who I’ve loved for ages, but don’t have regular series of their own. The eight stories presented here look a lot of fun, and with Valentines Day just around the corner, it would make a great gift for any romantically inclined comic fans.
Shazam!
Issue 8
DC Comics
Script – Mark Waid
Art – Goran Sudžuka
Colours – Ive Svorcina
Letters – Troy Peteri
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Shazam! #8 (Link)
THE CAPTAIN VS. ALIEN DINOSAURS! The Captain’s side deal with Solomon is proving to be more curse than blessing! Will even his newfound levels of wisdom help him stop the alien dinosaur invaders called The Auditors from unleashing planetary chaos?
I didn’t miss Dan Mora as much as I thought last issue, which just goes to show how strong this book is. Goran Sudžuka, has stepped in to some big boots, and has acquitted himself admirably. Mark Waid continues to have a lot of fun with the good Captain and I’m loving how DC are totally embracing the lighter side of things.
Birds of Prey
Issue 6
DC Comics
Script – Kelly Thompson
Art – Leonardo Romero
Colours – Jordie Bellaire
Letters – Clayton Cowles
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Birds of Prey #6 (Link)
ALL-OUT WAR ON THEMYSCIRA! It’s all-out war on Themyscira as the team faces off against the mythical Megaera…can the Birds overcome this ancient evil?! Or will one of them have to pay the ultimate price…?
My third DC book of the week, and it’s another one that is really pulling me back into the DC Universe. DC really hit the mark with the Dawn of DC shake up and Birds of Prey has gone from strength to strength. I hope this book is successful enough to extend beyond the schedules 8 issues, as I want to see more from this amazing team.
The Sensational She-Hulk
Issue 5
Marvel Comics
Script – Rainbow Rowell
Art – Ig Guara
Colours – Dee Cunniffe
Letters – Joe Caramagna
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – The Sensational She-Hulk #5 (Link)
She-Hulk, Hell-Cat and CAPTAIN MARVEL were supposed to have a nice night out at Hell-Cat’s favorite bar…but it’s the Marvel Universe and in the Marvel Universe, we can’t have nice things. With their very souls at stake, Captain Marvel asks She-Hulk a question that could have absolutely HUGE consequences.
LEGACY #183
Some scheduling shenanigans means I was a bit confused about where we are with She-Hulk, as the blurb for last issue was not what happened in the book. But we are back on track now and the arrival of Carol Danvers, who just so happens to be the leader of The Avengers, dropping by to ask a question, can surely only mean one thing.
X-Men
Issue 31
Marvel Comics
Script – Gerry Duggan
Art – Phil Noto
Letters – Clayton Cowles
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – X-Men #31 (Link)
THE ULTIMATE MUTANT HUNTER! The X-Men lived in fear of Nimrod’s creation, and now it’s clear why! The ultimate weapon of mutant extinction is ever-adapting, ever-evolving, with only one goal—DEATH TO MUTANTKIND!
Do I know what is going on in the X-books right now? No, not really, but that doesn’t stop me from enjoying the race to the end of the Krakoa era. I have to say, that whilst things don’t look too good for Logan and Kitty on this cover, Kurt appears to be having too much fun bamf’ing around, just look at the grin on his face.
Star Trek: Defiant
Issue 11
IDW Publishing
Script – Christopher Cantwell
Art – Mike Feehan
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Star Trek: Defiant #11 (Link)
The Defiant crew faces their most dangerous bounty in the finale of Defiant arc two! Iotion gangster Benny the Munch is in town looking to expand his turf, and he’s not stopping until he owns every living being in the galaxy. Meanwhile, when Captain Worf sends Nymira on an undercover mission to uncover the infamous mobster’s grand plans, she finds herself volunteering her captain to fight Benny’s prized Gorn goon in a Kreel death tournament known as the Kash-Baht Death Crucible. Whoops!
IDW really are going a bang up job with their Star Trek line. Defiant has managed to come out of Day of Blood stronger than ever, and the crew of misfits really does gel. I don’t think enough of you are picking these books up, and I believe and self respecting Star Trek fan would get a lot out of this series.
On the Radar, these are comics I’ve not got on my physical Pull List, but are books I’ll pick up digitally or in trades:
Fantastic Four #17
Marvel Comics
Script – Ryan North
Art – Carlos Gómez
Colours – Jesus Aburtov
Letters – Joe Caramagna
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Fantastic Four #17 (Link)
When construction unearths something unexpected, Susan Storm is called in—not as a super hero but an archaeologist! But when the bones she uncovers—tens of thousand of years old, dating back to the first arrival of humans in the Americas—turn out to be female…and matching her build…and wearing the shredded and decayed remains of what appears to be BLUE FABRIC constructed of unstable molecules, she must accept the fantastic: Dr. Susan Storm is going to DIE deep in Earth’s prehistory…and that time is coming sooner than she might think! Also in this issue: an anniversary date for Reed and Sue! So Sue gets both inarguable evidence of her own death AND some romance. Not in that order though.
LEGACY #710

Finally, both box sets will contain multiple exclusive posters, including a Sex Bob-omb concert print and a deluxe holofoil art print.
“We’ve all been working hard on these box sets, which I think are such a complicated project and interesting challenge,” said Bryan Lee O’Malley. “It’s been fun working with the legend Patrick Crotty and my buddy Nathan Fairbairn, and the folks at Oni Press are doing a great job. I hope everyone likes the end results!”
“This box set is an experience from top to bottom, inside and out,” added Sierra Hahn, Oni Press Editor-in-Chief. “Bryan and Patrick have created something that faithfully honors Scott Pilgrim fans as well anyone who loves exceptional, fun storytelling and is obsessive about graphic design. I can’t wait for readers, new and old, to behold this incredible tome this summer!”
I’ve been a massive Scott Pilgrim fan since the beginning and even though I have the original black and white issues and the colour hardback releases, I really want to add both these sets to my collection. Not sure how I will afford it but they are very desirable. I hope this also means we will see more Scott Pilgrim related merchandise to celebrate this 20th anniversary.
