The Geeky Brummie Pull List with Guardians of the Galaxy
It’s an absolutely huge Pull List and On The Radar this week. The Comic of the Week title goes to Guardians of the Galaxy from Marvel Comics. The other 8 comics on the main Pull List come from Image Comics, Syzygy Publishing, DC Black Label, IDW Publishing and Marvel Comics. Our On The Radar selections are 7 comics from Image Comics, Dark Horse Comics, Marvel Comics and Vault Comics. With so many new comics this week, MEANWHILE… takes a short break.
If you want to send any comics or details of any comic related events we should feature, feel free to reach out to me at keith@geekybrummie.com or comics@geekybrummie.com
Now on with the comics…
Guardians of the Galaxy
Issue 1
Marvel Comics
Writers – Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly
Artist – Kev Walker
Colourist – Matt Hollingsworth
Buy digitally on Comixology – Guardians of the Galaxy #1 (Link)
WHO ARE THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY? One year ago, the Guardians of the Galaxy were destroyed. Their optimistic future shattered by the betrayal of one of their own. Now they ride the space lanes of a lawless corner of the galaxy, trying to outrun their tragedy. Can they rediscover their heroism and humanity on the bleakest frontier? Can they forgive the failures of their past? Or will they fade into the dark, eternally unforgiven? Writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly (CAPTAIN AMERICA: SENTINEL OF LIBERTY) team up with artist Kev Walker(PREDATOR) for a Guardians story like no other!
LEGACY #181
It was a close run thing for the comic of the week title with some many great comics being released. What finally swung it was the fact this new Guardians series is being illustrated by Kev Walker. Kev is one of my favourite artists and seeing him draw the GOTG was something I couldn’t miss. The writers, Lanzing and Kelly are no slouches either, and if you read this column regularly you’d see I pick up quite a few books by those guys. The cover promises something extraordinary and I can’t wait to see it all pays out.
Eight Billions Genies
Issue 8
Image Comics
Writer – Charles Soule
Artist – Ryan Browne
Buy digitally on Comixology – Eight Billion Genies #8 (Link)
MINISERIES FINALE! The monumental ode to worldwide wish fulfillment completes its story with an exploration of THE FIRST EIGHT CENTURIES after the moment eight billion genies appeared on earth. We’ll see how the last remaining wishes get used and discover the fates of the characters we met at the Lampwick Tavern all that time ago. What’s our wish? That you’ll see us through, all the way to the end.
This series has been phenomenal and a truly unique experience. Soule and Browne have crafted a comic unlike any other, and I imagine this final issue will hit hard.
Danger Street
Issue 5
DC Black Label
Writer – Tom King
Artist – Jorge Fornés
Colourist – Dave Stewart
Letterer – Clayton Cowles
Buy digitally on Comixology – Danger Street #5 (Link)
CHAPTER FIVE: MANHUNTER
What does a small-town murder have to do with the mysteries of the Multiverse? Lady Cop is on the case, but time is running out! Gods from beyond the stars are battling over the boy who could save all their lives, the Manhunter is stalking his prey, and, meanwhile, the Dingbats are tired of waiting for answers…and they’re about to take revenge into their own hands!
I’m loving this series. Tom King has struck as vein, taking on some of DC’s forgotten characters and crafting some of the most interesting books in comics. Be sure to look out of the Tom King variant cover as it is one of the best covers available.
Star Trek
Issue 6
IDW Publishing
Writer – Collin Kelly
Artist – Ramon Rosanas
Buy digitally on Comixology – Star Trek #6 (Link)
Chaos ensues as the God City sets out on a collision course for Earth! Inside the living city, Captain Sisko and Dr. Crusher face off against the cosmic being wearing the ancient city as armor. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Commander Data pushes the Theseus and its crew to their limits in trying to keep up with the being zooming across the quadrant. But where do ants stand among giants?
The IDW Star Trek era continues to go from strength to strength. This flagship title is doing some interesting things with the characters and it’s fun filling in the blanks between the years depicted in the live action TV shows.
Star Trek: Defiant
Issue 2
IDW Publishing
Writer – Christopher Cantwell
Artist – Angel Unzueta
Buy digitally on Comixology – Star Trek: Defiant #2 (Link)
Convinced that the only hope to prevent planetary genocide lies in understanding how the power of the gods is being harvested, Captain Worf and first officer Spock set the stolen Defiant on course to break into a highly guarded Section 31 outpost to recruit the highest computing mind in the galaxy-Lore!
Reading this after watching season three of Picard really makes some things hit hard. I hope that these books are canon as it seems these stories really do tie in to the live action stuff well. If you’re a Star Trek fan you really should be picking up these IDW books.
All Against All
Issue 5
Image Comics/Syzygy Publishing
Writer – Alex Paknadel
Artist – Caspar Wijngaard
Buy digitally on Comixology – All Against All #5 (Link)
Helpless is no longer the apex predator. A new monster is running amok in the habitat, destroying everything it sees in a frenzy of instinct unbound. Meanwhile, as the most dangerous animals that have ever lived clash and vie for supremacy, a humbled and gravely injured B’Tay must finally choose between his life’s work and his children-alien and human alike.
Featuring variant covers by GABRIEL RODRIGUEZ (Locke & Key) and JAMES STOKOE (ORC STAIN).
So this looks like the end of the road for this series. It’s been a great ride and a beautiful book to read.
The Ambassadors
Issue 2
Image Comics
Writer – Mark Millar
Artist – Karl Kerschl
Buy digitally on Comixology – The Ambassadors #2 (Link)
The six best people in the world will be given superpowers by a Korean billionaire who’s cracked the superhuman code. First up is an Ambassador for India and his training at their secret Antarctic base.
I missed this when issue one was published but I heard good things and managed to pick up a copy before it sold out. So here it is on the main Pull List as issue two pops up with next artist with the next individual to be given superpowers. Will they be worthy?
Storm & The Brotherhood of Mutants
Issue 3
Marvel Comics
Writer – Al Ewing
Artist – Alessandro Vitti
Colourist – Rain Beredo
Letterer – Ariana Maher
Buy digitally on Comixology – Storm & The Brotherhood of Mutants #3 (Link)
THE LAST STAND! One thousand years in the future, the Empire of the Red Diamond has located Fortress Arakko—the burning Last Castle at the heart of the Storm System! The only hope for the universe lies in bringing a long-lost legend back to life… Ororo of the Storm returns to the Sinister Age for the final battle!
SINS OF SINISTER TIE-IN
The last issue was a blast of a Star Wars homage and I’m really surprised by how great these Sins of Sinister books have been. As we near the end of the event I hope they go out with a big bang.
X-Men
Issue 21
Marvel Comics
Writer – Gerry Duggan
Artist – Stefano Caselli
Colourist – Federico Blee
Letterer – Clayton Cowles
Buy digitally on Comixology – X-Men #21 (Link)
LORD OF THE BROOD, PART THREE
Why have the Brood gone mad? Which of the X-Men’s past deeds is coming back to haunt them? And are bloodthirsty alien monsters even the biggest threat the team is currently facing? All these answers and more will be revealed! Featuring a connecting cover to CAPTAIN MARVEL #48!
It’s been fun seeing the X-Men face a lethal Brood again but after that last page cliffhanger in the previous issue, who knows where the story will go next.
On the radar some other comics not on the Pull List but well worth checking out:
