New Comic Book Day with Marvel Comics 1000.
Time to pick up some new comics from Worlds Apart Birmingham (formerly Nostalgia & Comics). These are Geeky Brummie’s picks of the comics available today from your local comic book store – it’s nearly a clean sweep for Marvel this week as the comic book giant celebrates its 80th Anniversary with the release of Marvel Comics 1000.
Title: Marvel Comics 1000
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Issue No.: 1
Creative Team: Al Ewing: Story & Writer : A Cavalcade of Comic Book Luminaries
How could I not pick this as my comic of the week? Overseen by the awesome Al Ewing this huge issue pulls together a host of legendary Marvel creators who each contribute a page to this massive story. It’s some achievement to pack this many creators under one cover and I’m sure it would made Stan Lee very happy to see this marking the 80th Anniversary of Marvel Comics. Excelsior!
From the Publisher:

In celebration of Marvel’s 80th Anniversary, we have gathered together the greatest array of talent ever to be assembled between the covers of a single comic book! Featuring the entirety of the Marvel Universe of characters! Rated T PERFECTBOUND FORMAT!“
Title: Marvel Monsters
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Issue No.: 1
Creative Team: Cullen Bunn – Writer : Becky Cloonan, Scott Hepburn, Gerardo Zaffino – Artists : Superlog – Artist & Variant Cover Artist : Nick Bradshaw – Cover Artist
I’m monster mad. Yes, I love a bit of Kaiju action and Marvel has a very long history of monster comics. They even published some Godzilla comics way back when, where he even meets the Avengers and more. So I couldn’t resist popping Marvel Monsters on my list this week – those splash pages alone will be awesome.
From the Publisher:
“THE MONSTERS ARE COMING! Someone is doing terrible things to the Marvel Monsters, and only Kid Kaiju can stop it! But that’s not all! A murderers’ row of artists like Becky Cloonan, Gerardo Zaffino and others are on hand to provide awesome monster splash pages, accompanied by cross sections from superstar artist Superlog! It’s the big, bold, beautiful celebration of all things Monstrously Marvel that you won’t want to miss!“
Title: Power Pack: Grow Up!
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Issue No.: 1
Creative Team: Louise Simonson – Writer : Gurihiru – Artist : June Brigman – Artist & Cover Artist : Elsa Charretier & Logan Lubera – Variant Cover Artists
This is just a one shot as part of the Marvel 80 celebrations but I used to love the Power Pack books. Bringing back the original creative team instantly meant I was going to pick this one up. The team have been popping up in other stories lately (you have been picking up Future Foundation right – https://geekybrummie.com/comics/doom-patrol-weight-of-the-worlds-ncbd-7th-august-2019/) so this blast from the past is a great way to find out more about the Powers siblings. Oh, and one of my favourite X-Men characters Lila Cheney makes an appearance and I wasn’t going to miss that.
From the Publisher:
“BELOVED POWER PACK CREATORS LOUISE SIMONSON AND JUNE BRIGMAN GET THE GANG BACK TOGETHER FOR A SPECIAL 80TH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE!
For more than 60 issues, Louise Simonson and June Brigman brought a light and youthfulness to Marvel Comics that had rarely been seen before — or since. Alex, Julie, Katie and Jack Power — four ordinary children granted incredible alien abilities — soared into our hearts with amazing adventures from the Morlocks’ sewers to the depths of space. Now Louise and June return for a blast into the past — with a bonus helping of Wolverine and Kitty Pryde! When the Brood crash a Lila Cheney concert, Power Pack jumps into action. But can they fight past their own anxieties — and each other — fast enough to drive off the invasion? Plus: Fan-favorite artist Gurihuri teams up with Louise Simonson for the first time in a special short story!“
Title: Dial H For Hero
Publisher: DC Comics
Issue No.: 6
Creative Team: Sam Humphries – Writer : Joe Quinones : Artist & Cover Artist
Stopping this week from being a clean sweep for Marvel is issue 6 of Dial H. You’re missing a real comic treat if you’ve not been picking this book up (I’ll let you off if you’re planning on buying the trade). Pure unadulterated fun from cover to cover, Sam Humphries and Joe Quinones absolutely smash it every month. These Wonder Comics books are some of the best books out there and I can’t recommend them highly enough. Go get them.
From the Publisher:
“Just as Miguel and Summer learn the stunning truth of his identity, Mr. Thunderbolt launches his most devastating attack yet—by using the H-Dial on everyone in Metropolis! As chaos ensues throughout the city, Miguel and Summer seek out a certain Big Blue Boy Scout for help…but is it too late? Has Mr. Thunderbolt already won?“
Round Up
Also out this week are some other comics I recommend you take a look at including The Amazing Spider-Man #28, House of X #3, She-Hulk Annual #1, Spider-Man: Life Story #6 and Marvel Team-Up #5. I’ve picked a couple of these books in order to celebrate the news this week from D23 that Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk are getting their own Disney+ shows so what better way to introduce yourself to these incredible characters.
