Now on with the comics…
Planet of the Apes
Issue 1
Marvel Comics/20th Century Studios
Writer – David F. Walker
Artist – Dave Wachter
Colourist – Bryan Valenza

DAVID F. WALKER & DAVE WACHTER BRING PLANET OF THE APES BACK TO MARVEL COMICS IN SPECTACULAR STYLE! A new era of apes kicks off with part 1 of “Devolution”! The ALZ-113 virus has rampaged across planet Earth, and humanity is crumbling. While well-meaning researchers hunt for a cure, a fanatical group of humans has their own solution: Kill all apes. Peacekeeper Juliana Tobon is one of the few willing to stand against them, but the crisis is spreading, and soon apes will witness the true depths of human cruelty… Eisner-winning writer David F. Walker (POWER MAN AND IRON FIST, Bitter Root) joins forces with artist Dave Wachter (IRON FIST: HEART OF THE DRAGON, Star Wars: The High Republic – Trail of Shadows) on one of the most beloved sci-fi franchises in history!
When I was a kid I always loved the Planet of the Apes comics, whether they were the TV show based annuals or the Marvel UK reprint comics that eventually merged with Dracula Lives. The comic franchise has bounced around publishers and featured stories based on the various movie continuity. Now the Apes are back at Marvel with this new mini-series. Marvel have been doing great work with some of the other 20th Century Studios content so I have high hopes for this one.
I Hate This Place
Issue 7
Image Comics
Writer – Kyle Starks
Artist – Artyom Topilin
Colourist – Lee Loughridge
Buy digitally on Comixology – I Hate This Place #7 (Link)
No place on the ranch is safe now that Trudy’s murderous survivor cult family has invaded the house. Will the couple stay and fight, or will they take their chances out on the farm?
This new arc got off to a great start with the things taking a very definite turn for the worst when family turns up. How will the farm react to these interlopers, I can’t wait to find out.
Samurai Doggy
Issue 5
Aftershock Comics
Writer – Chris Tex
Artist – Santtos
Buy digitally on Comixology – Samurai Doggy #5 (Link)
A hugely powerful machine threatens the life of Samurai Doggy and a fierce battle begins.
Without much time to think, Doggy must fight against this new technology of the Clan Empire and try to survive this surprise attack by the robot playground park gang.
Utterly bonkers. Some may find the book slow going but I love the OTT story and the magnificent art that captures every blow.
Immoral X-Men
Issue 3
Marvel Comics
Writer – Kieron Gillen
Artist – Alessandro Vitti
Colourist – Rain Beredo
Letterer – Clayton Cowles
Buy digitally on Comixology – Immoral X-Men #3 (Link)
THE EXPERIMENT ENDS? Year 1 was the start of the experiment. By Year 10, it was filling a petri dish. By Year 100, it had cracked the glass and spread across the desk. Now it’s been 1000 years, and the lab is filled by the writhing, pulsing sins of sinister and all the lab staff have been devoured. Everyone is in hell. The upside: this includes Sinister.
SINS OF SINISTER TIE-IN
Following the sci-fi homages of the previous issue it’ll be interesting to see how Gillen and co tie things up a thousand years in the future. Will Sinister’s sins catch up with him?
The Avengers: War Across Time
Issue 4
Marvel Comics
Writer – Paul Levitz
Artist – Alan Davis
Colourist – Rachelle Rosenberg
Letterer – Cory Petit
Buy digitally on Comixology – The Avengers: War Across Time #4 (Link)
CHAPTER FOUR
The king of the dwarfs has Mjolnir and the Lava Men are ready to erupt from beneath the earth! While the Avengers are all that stand between Earth and a fiery doom, Kang is picking the perfect moment to strike again.
This retro style story continues to hit all the right nostalgia buttons for me. These are the Avengers I read in those black and white reprints in the early 70s. Having Alan Davis provide the art is the icing on the cake and proves he is still one of the greatest superhero artists.
The Amazing Spider-Man
Issue 23
Marvel Comics
Writer – Zeb Wells
Artists – John Romita Jr. and Scott Hanna
Colourist – Marcio Menyz
Letterer – Joe Caramagna
Buy digitally on Comixology – The Amazing Spider-Man #23 (Link)
WHAT DID PETER DO?! We opened this series with a question. The centerpiece of the answer is a flat-out fight.
LEGACY #917
What did you do Peter? I hope that the answers have been worth the nearly year long wait. I love the cover, especially as it riffs on the original The Amazing Spider-Man #1 cover from 1962.
On the radar some other comics not on the Pull List but well worth checking out:
Saga #63
Image Comics
Writer – Brian K. Vaughan
Artist – Fiona Staples
Buy digitally from Comixology – Saga #63 (Link)
Is this hell?
Scarlet Witch #4
Marvel Comics
Writer – Steve Orlando
Artists – Sara Pichelli and Elisabetta D’Amico
Colourist – Matt Wilson
Letterer – Cory Petit
Buy digitally on Comixology – Scarlet Witch #4 (Link)
BATTLE FOR BLOOD! The Scarlet Witch’s shopkeeper, Darcy Lewis, has a secret—and when the consequences of that secret result in the annihilation of Wanda’s shop, Wanda Maximoff must choose between protecting her new life or saving her friend’s. SCARLET WITCH faces SCYTHIA, leader of the Bacchae, in a battle to answer the question: What does it mean to enact justice?
Love Everlasting #6
Image Comics

Colourist – Matt Hollingsworth

Back again: The book that turned the comics industry upside-down with “quite a bit of humor…[and] a lot of heart” (The New York Times). Jesus Christ, the Son of God, tackles his biggest challenge in 2000 years: babysitting a child with super powers! Meanwhile, his roommate-the superhero called Sunstar-faces his greatest enemy, and his own guilt, in a court of law. Written and co-created by 2022 Eisner winner Mark Russell with art by co-creator Richard Pace and Leonard Kirk.
Where Monsters Lie #3
Dark Horse Comics

Artist – Piotr Kowalski
Colourist – Vladimir Popov
Letterer – Joshua Reed
Buy digitally on Comixology – Where Monsters Lie #3 (Link)
The monsters residing at Wilmhurst find their secret havens time cut short as law enforcement comes knocking at their door for a bloody showdown.
A brand-new meta-horror story that’s Cabin in the Woods meets Tucker and Dale vs. Evil.
Hey X-Men, watch out
Last weekend Marvel revealed its first promotional image for the upcoming The Fall of X series of books. Drawn by the legendary Bryan Hitch the image harks back to a similar image from The Fall of The Mutants in 1988. The image reveals the titles involved in the crossover with some very interesting new titles and some decidedly non-mutant books like Avengers, Iron Man and Spider-Man.
The original Fall event saw the Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor and the New Mutants undergo major ordeals and drastic changes in their status quo. Here is the promotional image for that saga by Alan Davis and Paul Neary for comparison.
What will The Fall of X hold in store for all of mutantdom? I guess we’ll find out in August.
