The Geeky Brummie Pull List with Alienated and Valentine’s Day with IDW.
It’s Wednesday so that means it’s time to pick you the new comics from Worlds Apart Birmingham (formerly Nostalgia & Comics) or it’s distingushed competition Forbidden Planet. These are Geeky Brummie’s picks of the comics available today from your local comic book store.
This week it’s Alienated #1 from BOOM! Studios that takes the pick of the week but we have a couple of Valentine’s Day Specials from IDW for you sci-fi romantics out there – Star Trek: Year Five – Valentine’s Day Special #1 and Transformers: Valentine’s Day Special #1
I also recommend a bunch of other great comics to discover this week including a bunch of continuing Marvel titles and the first issue of the second season of Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp’s Green Lantern and you can find them all in my pull list below.
If all of these great comics aren’t enough for you then why not bolster your reading list by checking out some of my previous choices in the videos at the bottom of the page.
Title: Alienated
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Issue No.: 1
Creative Team: Simon ‘Si’ Spurrier – Writer : Christian Wildgoose – Artist & Cover Artist : Bengal – Variant Cover Artist
Simon ‘Si’ Spurrier is writing some of my favourite comics right now so I’m curious to see what his slightly wonky take on E.T. will be like. The preview art I’ve seen by Christian Wildgoose looks incredible and I’m liking the repeating layout for the introductions of the main characters. I suspect this will be a less biting title than Hellblazer but with Spurriers often lyrical writing and the beautifully designed and laid out art I’m certainly looking forward to this one.
BOOM! Studios recently released this short promo for the book which gives you a taste of what to expect.
From the Publisher:
“Acclaimed writer Simon Spurrier ( John Constantine Hellblazer, Coda ) and artist Chris Wildgoose ( Batgirl, Batman: Nightwalker ) present a subversive coming-of-age story about having all the power to change the world but the unready hands to truly wield it.
Three teenagers, each an outcast in their own way, stumble upon an unearthly entity as it’s born. As they bond over this shared secret and the creature’s incredible abilities, it becomes clear to the teenagers that their cute little pet is a superpredator in the making—and it’s in need of prey.
Guided by the best intentions at first, the teens’ decisions soon become corrupted by adolescent desires, small town jealousies, and internal rivalries, sending them into a catastrophic spiral of their own making.“
Title: Star Trek: Year Five – Valentine’s Day Special
Publisher: IDW
Issue No.: 1
Creative Team: Paul Cornell – Writer : Christopher Jones – Artist & Cover Artist : Derek Charm – Variant Cover Artist
Paul Cornell is best known writing Captain Britain and MI:13 as well as some Doctor Who here he takes over Star Trek: Year Five for a special Valentine’s Day one-shot. The main title has been a thoroughly entertaining take on the original TV show and I am excited to see what Mr Cornell can do to make Valentine’s Day extra special.
From the Publisher:
“James T. Kirk has had many loves during his mission among the stars, but this time he may have met his match in fellow Starfleet Captain Laura Rhone. This special story by award-winning writer of prose, comics, and television Paul Cornell (Doctor Who) takes Captain Kirk to where he has never gone before!“
Title: Transformers – Valentine’s Day Special
Publisher: IDW
Issue No.: 1
Creative Team: Patrick Ehlers – Writer : Sara Pitre-Durocher – Writer & Artist : Jack Lawrence – Artist
In the second of this weeks IDW Valentine’s Day Specials we have this from Patrick Ehlers, Sara Pitre-Durocher and Jack Lawrence. This book looks delightfully cute and also features Dinosaurs. So why not give your special someone something different this year and give them a comic book as a Valentine’s Day present.
From the Publisher:
“Bookish Glyph wants a challenge-to do work for xeno-relations, not just data analysis. Athletic Tap-Out needs a challenge-his boxing career isn’t working out so well. When one mission presents both of them a chance to meet new challenges head-on, will they be able to lift each other up to the task or will they just get in each other’s way?
Robo-mance is real in this adventure focusing on love in the Transformers universe!
The perfect gift for Valentine’s Day or any romantic occasion!
Back-up story written by the real-life engaged couple: Kate Leth & Cohen Edenfield!“
