The Geeky Brummie Pull List with Battle Action Special
It’s another great week of top quality comics in this weeks Pull List. Firstly, we have Battle Action Special, from Rebellion and the Treasury of British Comics which is our Comic of the Week. Then, we have three other books on the Pull List this week, from Image and Marvel. Next, we have another three great comics to look out for On The Radar from IDW Publishing and Titan Books.
Finally, in MEANWHILE… we pick a title from the future you may want to add to your Pull List now.
But wait! It may be Wednesday, but thanks to the Bank Holidays, UK comic fans will need to wait until Thursday to pick up your funny books from your local comic shop.
If you want to send any comics or comic related events we should feature, feel free to reach out to me at keith@geekybrummie.com.
Now on with the comics…

Two of the greatest British comics of all time join forces- and bring you seven new stories of blazing Battle Action!
Writer Garth Ennis (Preacher, The Boys) presents his own take on the classic characters of Battle and Action. Ace fighter pilot Johnny Red battles Skreamer of the Stukas on the nightmarish Russian front. Veteran leader The Sarge and his section face hell in the brutal Italian campaign. Wheeler-dealer Crazy Keller drives for his life as World War Two comes to its bloody conclusion. Lethal British agent Dredger doles out justice- of a kind- on the streets of 1980s London.
All these and more in this high-octane collection of fantastic new combat strips, featuring scripts by Ennis and art by some of the biggest names in modern comics, including Kevin O’Neill (Nemesis The Warlock, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), Chris Burnham (Batman) and John Higgins (Watchmen,
Dreadnoughts). Get your front-row seats to the front line, as only the legendary Battle Action can deliver!
Garth Ennis writes great war stories, so this collection based on characters from the legendary Battle and Action comics of the 1970s was a must pull. This comes with a hefty price tag but it’s well worth the money. Teamed with some of the best artists comics has to offer this book will take you back to the heady days of rip-roaring adventure. American readers will need to wait as this arrives there, in September. I’ll be posting a more in-depth review of this book in the coming weeks.
Twig
Issue 2
Image Comics
Writer – Skottie Young
Artist – Kyle Strahm
Colourist – Jean-Francois Beaulieus
Buy on Comixology – Twig #2 (Link)
The death of the Pathsayer sends Twig and Splat on a journey to a mysterious lab, where a premonition sheds dark light on further dangers to come. Join Eisner Award-winning writer SKOTTIE YOUNG (I HATE FAIRYLAND, MIDDLEWEST) and artist KYLE STRAHM (SPREAD, UNEARTH) as they bring us deeper into this unique dark-fantasy world.
Issue one was a delight and I can see readers already falling in love with Twig. This series is only solicited for five issues but I can’t see that being the end of a character and world that has so much to offer. This is more than a cute and cuddly book, it has depth and charm galore and really makes you appreciate the stories comics can offer.
The Amazing Spider-Man
Issue 3
Marvel Comics
Writer – Zeb Wells
Penciller- John Romita Jr.
Inker – Scott Hanna
Colourist – Marcio Menyz
Letterer – Joe Caramagna
Buy on Comixology – The Amazing Spider-Man #3 (Link)
I know that this is just #3, but did you notice that it’s LGY #897? That means something big is RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER! There are things you don’t know about Tombstone. Neither you, nor Spider-Man, will ever forget them.
LEGACY #897
It’s been a while since I picked up a Spidey book on a regular basis but this combo of Wells and Romita Jr. wasn’t something I could pass up. This story already has a lot of plates spinning and with issue 900 looming, I can’t see things getting any easier for our friendly-neighbourhood web-slinger.
Legion of X
Issue 2
Marvel Comics
Writer – Simon Spurrier
Artist – Jan Bazaldua
Buy on Comixology – Legion of X #2 (Link)
GOD FOR SALE! LEGION is offered an unholy deal by MOTHER RIGHTEOUS, wheeler-dealer of the astral plane. But is the price worth the prize for a young man stuck in his father’s shadow? Meanwhile, the Skinjacker grows bold. Not content with stealing identities of other mutants, he turns his powers on the Legion of X… And while newly arrived Arakki badass WEAPONLESS ZSEN has a beastly clash with a dangerous X-Man, her chaperone NIGHTCRAWLER is otherwise engaged—giving a massage…?
You can understand why Nightcrawler is such a fan favourite character when he is handled so eloquently by writers as good as Spurrier. This series will have certainly rewarded readers of Way of X, and may have confused new readers, but have faith as I’m sure this book will build into one of the better mutant titles in the Destiny of X line.

The Free Comic Book Day 2022: Doctor Who Comic leads into this new arc!
Coming Soon
Time to look ahead at a book that you should be adding to your Pull List Now.
The New Champion of Shazam! will introduce a new main Shazam! – the one-time Mary Marvel AKA Mary Bromfield – to the DCU in her first solo series. Written by Josie Campbell with art by Evan “Doc” Shaner, this is a title I’m looking forward to, very much. Evan Shaner is one of my favourite artists, who did some wonderful work on the Convergence: Shazam limited series in 2015, and Josie Campbell brought us the remarkable Future State: Green Lantern series. Take a look at the cover art, concept sketches and blurb for this exciting new series and ask your local comic store to reserve your copy now.
Go Mary
Mary Bromfield has always struggled to determine who she is outside her family…kinda hard to do when you’re all superheroes! Now, after Billy Batson’s heroic sacrifice, the power of Shazam has vanished, and she’s been left powerless. Most heroes would be distraught, but not Mary. It’s finally time for a voyage of self-discovery as she prepares for her freshman year of college and a civilian life. But nothing is ever truly normal for this young hero, because she’s just been chosen as the new champion of Shazam! (At least according to a talking rabbit sent by her estranged brother Billy.)
Will she embrace the power? Or will it die along with this world’s hope of survival against the mysterious magical forces waiting to take control? Find out in Mary’s first solo miniseries, brought to you by up-and-coming comics writer Josie Campbell (Future State: Green Lantern) and fan-favorite Shazam artist Evan Doc Shaner (Strange Adventures, Convergence: Shazam!)!
The upcoming four-issue series The New Champion of Shazam! will arrive on 2nd August 2022.
