The Geeky Brummie Pull List with Adventureman
It’s another small Pull List this week with Adventureman taking the Comic of the Week title once again. Filling out the rest of the Pull List is the final issue of the current iteration of Excalibur. We four new comics to look out for On The Radar from IDW, BOOM! Studios, Dark Horse Comics and Marvel.
In Meanwhile… we take a sneak peak at the upcoming Archaia title Cursed Pirate Girl: The Devil’s Cave
If you want to send any comics or comic related events we should feature, feel free to reach out to me at keith@geekybrummie.com.
Now on with the comics…
Title: Adventureman
Issue: 7
Publisher: Image Comics
Written by Matt Fraction : Art by Rachel Dodson and Terry Dodson
“GHOST LIGHTS”
Snow keeps falling, old ghosts keep calling, and Claire Connell discovers a giant secret buried deep underneath Manhattan.
It should come as no surprise to anyone that Adventureman is my Comic of the Week once again. This is such a fun series and really scratches that pulp adventure itch (I downloaded Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze on iTunes this week too). Fraction is a writer who can punch right in to the 30s/40s vibe but with a modern twist. The juxtaposition of the original Adventureman and Claire’s new experiences are delightful and shows how powerful and resourceful she is but also how much her family is part of her life. The Dodson’s continue to deliver art that is nothing short of perfection. Apparently issue 8 is hitting stores next week so don’t be shocked if this book takes the top spot then.
Title: Excalibur
Issue: 26
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Written by Tini Howard : Art by Marcus To
OTHERWORLD FALLS! Merlyn and King Arthur have taken the Starlight Citadel. Saturnyne still lives – but not for long. Betsy Braddock must decide once and for all where her loyalties lie. It’s all been building to this – the fantasy ends here and reality rushes in. There is no haven for the witchbreed. Can they hold on to their champion, here at the twilight of an age?
This is it, the end of the line for this current version of Excalibur. It’s been a fun run, especially with these later issues leaning more in to the Captain Britain lore of old. Will it wrap everything up satisfactorily? Probably not, but I hope we get to see Captain Britain appear again soon in some form. If Excalibur were to return I would like to see them as a fully UK based team, working with S.T.R.I.K.E and for Pete Wisdom to return. With Destiny of X still to unfold, who know what the future holds but Marvel would be foolish to let such great characters sit on the sidelines for long.
On the radar this week some other comics not on the Pull List but well worth checking out:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #124
IDW Publishing
Written by Sophie Campbell : Art by Ken Garing
The TMNT and their Mutant Town neighbors celebrate the holidays, but not everyone is enjoying the times. The Turtles feel the absence of Master Splinter, tensions are rising in the neighborhood, and a new threat is emerging. Can the Turtles find their way back to the spirit of the season before disaster strikes? A special “silent night” holiday issue!
BRZRKR #6
BOOM! Studios
Written by Matt Kindt and Keanu Reeves : Art by Ron Garney and Bill Crabtree
What revelations will B. unlock when his handler’s life hangs in the balance?
During a mission to retrieve an artifact from a museum in the midst of an ongoing civil war, B. saves his handler, Jim, from a chopper explosion. As he races to get his gravely injured friend to the extraction point, B. reveals new secrets from his past, but little does he know that Caldwell and Diana are secretly recording everything.
Mazebook #4
Dark Horse Comics
Written and Illustrated by Jeff Lemire
Stuck in an urban labyrinth of his own torment, melancholy building inspector Will and his talking canine companion fight their way through a dangerous metropolitan maze and head underground on the hunt to find his long-gone daughter
Defenders #4
Marvel Comics
Written by Al Ewing : Art by Javier Rodriguez
BEFORE THERE WERE GODS… THERE WERE MARVELS! Doctor Strange and his Defenders land in the Fourth Cosmos – the home of the Archetypes of Good and Evil, primal entities of pure myth destined to echo through every reality to come – as the desperate Dr. Zota attempts to harness their power to rewrite all existence in his own hand! Al Ewing and Javier Rodriguez explore the truest origins of the Marvel Multiverse in a cosmos-colliding epic you’ll have to experience to believe!
Yo Ho Ho
Archaia and BOOM! Studios have just revealed a first glimpse at Cursed Pirate Girl: The Devil’s Cave #1, a special issue that marks artist/creator Jeremy Bastian’s return to his cult 2012 series. This one-shot issue reveals the next chapter of Cursed Pirate Girl, and is due for release in January 2022.
In this long awaited continuation of Cursed Pirate Girl, her loyal companion Pepper Dice reveals that there’s still time to bring back her father, the Dread Pirate Captain Douglas! If she can escape the Sea King’s Palace with The Bright Star, will she be bold enough to enter The Devil’s Cave in the hope of bringing her father back? Or will the Devil Jonah and his minions stop her?
This is definitely one to look out for especially for fans of Bryan Talbot’s Luther Arkwright series.
