The Geeky Brummie Pull List with Godzilla: Monsters & Protectors
It’s a busier week for comics this time round. The Big G makes a triumphant return to comics, the X-Men find a different way, S.W.O.R.D. sharpens up and there’s more Kaiju. Four other comics make it in to our On The Radar section and you should definitely check them out.
In Meanwhile… we are take a look at the return of Hey Kids! Comics! and Shang-Chi gets a trailer.
Now on with the comics…
Title: Godzilla: Monsters and Protectors
Issue: 1
Publisher: IDW
Written by Erik Burnham : Art by Dan Schoening
From the Publisher:
Godzilla roars back into comics with a giant-sized first issue! Extra story and extra content mark the King of Monsters’ triumphant return! “Rise Up!” Part 1: When a coldly single-minded businessman uses an untested element to create clean energy for a profit, he inadvertently awakens the beast from the deep—Godzilla! Sensing the harm the new energy poses to the planet, Godzilla attacks the heart of the problem—humankind! It will be up to three intrepid middle-school students—with a little magic help from Infant Island—to show Godzilla that not all humans are bad… and that there is still hope for Planet Earth. Reuniting the blockbuster creative team of writer Erik Burnham, artist Dan Schoening, and colorist Luis Antonio Delgado (Ghostbusters), Godzilla: Monsters & Protectors promises to romp and stomp fans—old and new—of the greatest kaiju ever like never before!
The Big G makes a triumphant return to comics as IDW launches its latest Godzilla line. This is the first new Godzilla comics since 2016 and is aimed at the younger reader market. The previous IDW Godzilla books have been great and featured some fantastic art and whilst this book is more cartoonish in style I hope it brings plenty of new readers to the comic adventures of the King of Monsters.
Title: Way of X
Issue: 1
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Written by Simon Spurrier : Art by Bob Quinn : Coloured by Javier Tartaglia : Cover by Giuseppe Camuncoli
From the Publisher:
THE WAY TO THE FUTURE OF X! Mutantkind has built a new Eden… but there are serpents in this garden. Some mutants struggle to fit in. Some mutants turn to violence and death. And the children whisper of the Patchwork Man, singing in their hearts…Only one mutant senses the looming shadows. Snared by questions of death, law and love, only NIGHTCRAWLER can fight for the soul of Krakoa. Only he – and the curious crew he assembles – can help mutants defeat their inner-darkness and find a new way to live. The WAY OF X. SI SPURRIER (X-MEN LEGACY) and BOB QUINN (CAPTAIN AMERICA) push the frontiers of Krakoa in this unmissable entry into the bold new REIGN OF X.
Si Spurrier is writing some great comic and I hope his return to the X-Men book keeps up that quality. Pitched as a story that takes Nightcrawler and his team on a journey through a psychedelic tale about faith, science, culture, love and law this book could be something special.
Title: S.W.O.R.D.
Issue: 5
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Written by Al Ewing : Art by Valerio Schiti
From the Publisher:
ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK! On Krakoa, Fabian Cortez and the Quiet Council discuss the rules of murder. But in space, the murders have already begun…and the killer has a connection to Cortez he’d never suspect. The color may be gold…but this, my friends…is pure giallo…
Finally moving out of the shadow of the King in Black I’m hopeful we’l get to see Al and him team fulfil the promise of the first issue. The last few issues weren’t bad by any means but now that albatross has flown off we’ll see Al let loose.
Title: Ultraman: The Trials of Ultraman
Issue: 2
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Written by Mat Groom & Kyle Higgins : Art by Francesco Manna
From the Publisher:
When a teammate is in danger, you pull out all the stops to save them — and sometimes, when things are really dire, that means…donning your Sunday best? But even if Team Ultraman can pull off an unorthodox rescue, the results will raise some mind-bending questions…and put our heroes in the crosshairs of a brand-new threat!
Seems only fitting to round off the pull list with another kaiju comic. This series is building on the world created in the previous Marvel series and the backup strips add extra flavour. Even if you missed Rise of Ultraman you can jump in here with no problem.
On the radar this week some other comics not yet on the Pull List but well worth checking out:

The epic adventure comic of 2021 is just getting started!
Look up in the Sky it’s Hey Kids! Comics!
In just a few weeks Howard Chaykin returns with Hey Kids! Comics! Volume 2, this time entitled Prophets & Loss. This mix of fact and fiction celebrates the men and women who created the world of comics and traces a path through the creation of many of comics’ greatest franchises. Volume 1 was seriously good and this comic book history is a great companion to Chabon’s Kavalier & Clay novel, which you should read right now.
Here’s a look at what you can expect from Volume 2 –
Digging deeper into the sometimes-sordid, sometimes-seedy, always-entertaining lives of the men and women who built a multi-billion-dollar industry almost by accident, ‘Prophets & Loss’ traces a path through the creation of many of comics’ greatest franchises, from companies that dared to push the boundaries of least-common-denominator kid stuff — usually at their peril — to those happy just to ride the waves others took the time to create. Along the way there’s exploitation, Blaxploitation, custom toilet paper, death at the dinner table and plenty more as fans turn pro and pros turn bitter.
Hey Kids! Comics! Vol. 2: Prophets & Loss #1 will be available from comic book shops on Wednesday, May 5th published by Image Comics.
Not Nine, Ten Rings
After waiting ages for a glimpse of one of most exciting developments of Marvel’s Phase 4 we are finally introducing Shang-Chi as played by Simu Liu.
