The Geeky Brummie Pull List with Skybound X
I really enjoyed the first issue so I’ve made the second issue of Skybound X my Comic of the Week this week. Two mutant books make up the rest of the Pull List. Three more new comics make it in to our On The Radar section, including the latest issues of The Silver Coin and Eve and the first issue of Beyond The Breach and you should definitely check them out.
In Meanwhile… we take a first look at Eighty Days from A.C. Esguerra and BOOM! Studios.
Now on with the comics…
Title: Skybound X
Issue: 2
Publisher: Skybound/Image
Written and Illustrated by Robert Kirkman, Irma Kniivila, Tri Vuong, Joshua Williamson and Chip Zdarsky : Art by Andrei Bressan, Ryan Ottley and Ramon Perez : Cover by Cliff Rathburn
The second chapter of the wildest WALKING DEAD story ever—RICK GRIMES 2000! Plus, the debut of a major new STILLWATER character, surprising coda to the BIRTHRIGHT saga, and the first appearance of EVERYDAY HERO MACHINE BOY!
The first issue of Skybound X was a very good start to this weekly anthology. It’s not sometime the American market really goes for but I’m loving it. The new continuing Walking Dead story is pretty neat and the shifting stories that make up each issue all have something to give. This is a great celebration of 10 years of Skybound and it is setting up the future pretty well too.
Title: Way of X
Issue: 4
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Written by Simon Spurrier : Art by Bob Quinn : Cover by Giuseppe Camuncoli
KILL NO MAN! (BUT SOME EXCEPTIONS MAY APPLY). Nightcrawler must act fast to avoid catastrophe as the laws of Krakoa (and physics) are tested to their limits. Also: a nice family bonding sesh with no violent repercussions. Just kidding. This is Xavier vs. Legion in a boozed-up Tiki bar, with the sanity of mutantkind at stake.
Lots of interesting things are going on in this book. With the rest of the mutants establishing new homeworlds and protecting the planet, the relationship between Nightcrawler and Legion as they explore the darker recesses of this new Krakoan utopia is just fantastic. It’s great to see David back and challenging the work of his father. It looks like things will only get more interesting for these mutants as time goes on.
Title: Excalibur
Issue: 22
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Written by Tini Howard : Art by Marcus To : Cover by Mahmud A. Asrar
THE TOWER AND THE STORM! With Captain Britain and Excalibur reunited, Otherworld is their domain. An escort mission reveals deep political unrest among Saturnyne’s court. And a brutal sacrifice bears fruit.
Excalibur is still a book I enjoy – with Rogue moving on to join the main X-Men team I wonder what that will mean for the rest of the group. Betsy still has a lot do deal with since her return and I’m not sure Saturnyne is done with her just yet. I’m hoping we see more of Brian and Meggan in this book too – especially since we now know the are expecting again.
On the radar this week some other comics not on the Pull List but well worth checking out:
The Silver Coin #4
Image Comics
Written by Jeff Lemire : Art by Michael Walsh
The cycle of horror travels far into the future for the fourth issue of THE SILVER COIN by all-stars MICHAEL WALSH, CHIP ZDARSKY, KELLY THOMPSON, ED BRISSON, and JEFF LEMIRE. The year is 2467, and the old world has been buried beneath the junk of a new civilization. From the trash, a scavenger discovers ancient treasure—a coin. The price it carries, however, is unimaginable.
Eve #3
BOOM! Studios
Written by Victor LaVelle : Art by Jo Migyeong
Who can you trust when you’ve always been alone?
Eve finally reaches dry land, but soon discovers she has company.
When she encounters a mysterious group of children, she will have to grapple with the fact that not everything Wexler has told her was true. And if that’s the case, what else about her reality is a lie?
Beyond the Breach #1
Aftershock Comics
Written by Ed Brisson : Art by Damian Couceiro : Coloured by Patricio Delpeche : Lettered by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
Life sucks for Vanessa. Her mother just died and her boyfriend is cheating on her (with her own sister!). To clear her mind, Vanessa is taking the California road-trip that she’s been dreaming about for years. Her postcard-perfect drive through old growth forests quickly turns when THE BREACH hits. A bizarre anomaly in the sky plunges California into a nightmare-world populated with strange, extra-dimensional creatures. Now Vanessa, along with Dougie, an orphaned child, and Kai, a strange, fuzzball of a beast, must fight to survive if they ever hope to make it back home. If there’s even a home to return to. Written by Ed Brisson (Uncanny X-Men, Ghost Rider, Old Man Logan) and illustrated by Damian Couceiro (Old Man Logan, Iron Fist, X-Force), BEYOND THE BREACH is a fantastical sci-fi road trip adventure about perseverance and finding family in unexpected places.
