Now on with the comics…
Transformers
Issue 3
Skybound/Image Comics
Script and Art – Daniel Warren Johnson
Colours – Mike Spicer
Letters – Rus Wooton
Buy digitally on Comixology – Transformers #3 (Link)
Outnumbered and overpowered, it’s time for the Autobots to stand their ground, as Optimus Prime goes toe to toe with Skywarp!
This bold new version of Transformers continues to get better and better with each issue, Daniel Warren Johnson is an inspired choice of writer and artist. His work is visceral and raw, making this the most visually dynamic version of the Robots in Disguise in a long time. This series is nothing short of breathtaking. Even if you’re not a fan of Transformers, you should be reading this.
Birds of Prey
Issue 4
DC Comics
Script – Kelly Thompson
Art – Leonardo Romero
Colours – Jordie Bellaire
Letters – Clayton Cowles
Buy digitally on Comixology – Birds of Prey #4 (Link)
THE BIRDS VS. THE AMAZON WARRIORS! Chaos reigns as the first mission for the Birds of Prey has (unsurprisingly) gone sideways. Even with the collective battle prowess of her hand-picked team, did Black Canary bring enough firepower to fight their way off Themyscira?!
The Dawn of DC range has really brought be back in to the DC fold, and this book is one of the best titles in the line. Filled with characters I love, written and rendered with passion by Thompson and Romero, this book reminds me why I love the DC Universe.
Shazam!
Issue 6
DC Comics
Script – Mark Waid
Art – Dan Mora
Colours – Alejandro Sánchez
Letters – Troy Peteri
Buy digitally on Comixology – Shazam! #6 (Link)
MEET…SHAZAMITE! “Meet the Captain!” reaches its action-packed finale when Billy is forced to battle the very six gods who give him his magic abilities—a fight he can’t possibly hope to win! Once the dust settles…who will possess the power of Shazam? PLUS: The interdimensional imp Bat-Mite has come to Fawcett City and he’s brought his cousin with him: the Captain’s biggest fan, Shazamite! Then flee in terror before the entire city turns upside down!
Another excellent example of just how great the Dawn of DC line is, Shazam! is just so much fun. Waid and Mora are the Kings of DC right now, and every book they work on is filled with joy and a love of comics.
Alpha Flight
Issue 5
Marvel Comics
Script – Ed Brisson
Art – Scott Godlewski and David Cutler
Colours – Matt Milla
Letters – Travis Lanham
Buy digitally on Comixology – Alpha Flight #5 (Link)
FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT! As it all goes south in the Canadian North, can ALPHA FLIGHT at last stand united? Or will DEPARTMENT H shut them down for good? Don’t miss the conclusion of this FALL OF X epic, rife with sacrifice, SURPRISE APPEARANCES…and DEATH?!
This Fall of X tie in ends with this issue, but I hope the book has proved successful enough to encourage Marvel to bring the team back with a regular series. This run has really taped in to what made the original Alpha Flight book such fun. More please.
X-Men
Issue 29
Marvel Comics
Script – Gerry Duggan
Art – Joshua Cassara
Colours – Marte Gracia
Letters – Clayton Cowles
Buy digitally on Comixology – X-Men #29 (Link)
DOOM’S X-MEN! That’s right – Doctor Doom has his very own team of Latverian mutants, loyal to the benevolent leader that keeps their country safe, and they make their spectacular debut in this issue! The X-Men may be in the midst of a fall… but they’re not letting Doom’s personal squad take their title without a fight!
Doctor Doom has his own team of mutants? As if the X-Men didn’t have enough to deal with right now.
The Amazing Spider-Man
Issue 39
Marvel Comics
Script – Zeb Wells
Art -John Romita Jr. and Scott Hanna
Colours – Marcio Menyz
Letters – Joe Caramagna
Buy digitally on Comixology – The Amazing Spider-Man #39 (Link)
