Now on with the comics…
Transformers
Issue 1
Image Comics/Skybound
Script and Art – Daniel Warren Johnson
Colours – Mike Spicer
Letters – Rus Wooton
Buy digitally on Comixology – Transformers #1 (Link)
THE ALL NEW TRANSFORMERS ERA STARTS HERE!
Superstar creator DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON (DO A POWERBOMB, WONDER WOMAN: DEAD EARTH), alongside ENERGON UNIVERSE showrunner ROBERT KIRKMAN (VOID RIVALS, INVINCIBLE), reimagines Hasbro’s robots in disguise for a brand-new generation.
Optimus Prime was supposed to have led the Autobots to victory. Instead, the fate of Cybertron is unknown, and his allies have crash-landed far from home, alongside their enemies-the Decepticons.
As these titanic forces renew their war on Earth, one thing is immediately clear: the planet will never be the same. New alliances are struck. Battle lines are redrawn. And humanity’s only hope of survival is Optimus Prime.
Discover THE TRANSFORMERS like you’ve never seen them before!
I won’t be the only person with this book at the top of their Pull this week. The excitement for this comic has been building for months since the surprise events for the first issue of Void Rivals. With this and G.I.Joe now at Image and Skybound, it’s all change for the Hasbro licensed properties. The big draw for this book is of course the fact it is being written and illustrated by the uber talented Daniel Warren Johnson. His work on previous titles has been stunning and the preview pages of this book, show that isn’t going to change. This isn’t going to be the Transformers we remember, a whole new story awaits us, and I for one am very, very excited.
Birds of Prey
Issue 2
DC Comics
Script – Kelly Thompson
Art – Leonardo Romero
Colours – Jordie Bellaire
Letters – Clayton Cowles
Buy digitally on Comixology – Birds of Prey #2 (Link)
BLACK CANARY’S ALL-NEW TEAM ON THEIR FIRST MISSION! Black Canary has built an all-new team with a very specific and very dangerous first mission: extraction! Their target: [REDACTED]! She’s being held on [REDACTED] and guarded by a battalion of [REDACTED]. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, then we’re explaining it wrong! It’s a terrible mission! And before it can even be launched, the Birds have to gather a few mysterious supplies and see some old familiar faces…that they punch!
Loved issue one. Harley fits in to the team better than I expected, and as a massive Barda fan, I’m more than happy to see her playing a major part here. I’ve been surprised by how much I’m enjoying a number of these Dawn of DC books, and I’m on board for this one as long as Thompson keeps writing.
Shazam!
Issue 4
DC Comics
Script – Mark Waid
Art – Dan Mora
Colours – Alejandro Sánchez
Letters – Troy Peteri
Buy digitally on Comixology – Shazam! #4 (Link)
MARK WAID AND DAN MORA TURN EVERYTHING YOU KNOW ABOUT THE WORLD’S MIGHTIEST MORTAL ON ITS HEAD! Shadiness. Hatefulness. Arrogance. Zeal. Anger. Malice. These are the new powers of Shazam—and if Billy doesn’t find a way to get them under control, the lives of everyone around him will be forever destroyed!
Another Dawn of DC book I’m loving. These titles really remind me of the early 80s DC books I loved. The playfulness and stunning art really do make me glad I’m reading these titles. Waid and Mora really can’t do wrong at the moment and this book throughly deserves to be on your Pull.
Star Trek: Defiant
Issue 8
IDW Publishing
Script – Christopher Cantwell
Art – Mike Feehan
Buy digitally on Comixology – Star Trek: Defiant #8 (Link)
Arc two of the acclaimed Star Trek: Defiant series starts here! Still reeling from the battle on Qo’noS, Worf and the Defiant crew have been ordered to return to Starfleet headquarters where they await learning the Federation’s thoughts on their involvement in the fight against Kahless and the Red Path.
Day of Blood is over, so I’m intrigued to see where Cantwell and Co. take the crew of the Defiant next. These stories have a lot of time to fill before we see Worf again in the live action Picard. Although the series takes the name of the tough little ship, I happy to follow Captain Worf and his misfit crew wherever they end up.
The Rocketeer: In the Den of Thieves
Issue 3
IDW Publishing
Script – Stephen Mooney
Art – David Messina
Buy digitally on Comixology – The Rocketeer: In the Den of Thieves #3 (Link)
Cliff and Betty, with the aid of the jet pack’s mysterious inventor, are smuggled into Berlin on a desperate attempt to rescue Peevy and try to stop the Nazis from creating a fleet of flying doppelgangers for the German Luftwaffe! But even with the repaired rocket at his disposal, can Cliff overcome Hitler’s war machine and the SS Rocketeer prototype and save Peevy and Betty?!
Pulp adventure at it’s best. Mooney and Messina are clearly enjoying telling this story as much as I am reading it. The cover of this issue is another great one. I hope IDW find time for me adventures with Cliff and Betty, as four issues isn’t going to be enough.
X-Men
Issue 27
Marvel Comics
Script – Gerry Duggan
Art – Phil Noto
Letters – Clayton Cowles
Buy digitally on Comixology – X-Men #27 (Link)
SOMETHING CAUGHT YOUR EYE? When Cyclops joined this iteration of the X-Men, his pitch was simple—“I am the X-Men.” If this is so, the enemies of X-Men seem to have this fight all sewn up.
It’s not a great time to be an X-Man right now. I’m quite enjoying the reinvigoration of the line the Fall of X story has instigated. Having Phil Noto on board for art this issue means it will look amazing.
Immortal X-Men
Issue 16
Marvel Comics
Script – Kieron Gillen
Art – Lucas Werneck
Colours – David Curiel
Letters – Clayton Cowles
Buy digitally on Comixology – Immortal X-Men #16 (Link)
APOCALYPSE WHEN? When everything has already gone wrong, you may think at least you have nothing to worry about. You’d be wrong.
More mutant action with the final book on the Pull. The fall out of Fall of X continues and with Apocalypse now entering the fray, things are bound to get much more complicated.
On the Radar, these are comics I’ve not got on my physical Pull List, but are books I’ll pick up digitally or in trades:
Fantastic Four #12
Marvel Comics
Script – Ryan North
Art – Iban Coello
Colours – Jesus Aburtov
Letters – Ariana Maher
Buy digitally from Comixology – Fantastic Four #12 (Link)
What happens when a parallel world starts out different from our own but, through random chance and development, begins to resemble our Earth more and more closely? And what happens when those two universes begin to merge not just in style, but literally? It’s a fascinating scientific question that the Fantastic Four will have to consider as they swap places with their counterparts in this other world and find themselves battling for survival in the universe where everyone is a dinosaur, and not anthropomorphic ones, but literal full-scale dinosaurs with all their super-powers, wearing amazing super-hero costumes! Can Sue Storm defeat Brachiosaurus Iron Man? Can the Human Torch take down Lambeosaurus Captain Marvel, her head frill mimicking her human counterpart’s spiked hair? Can Reed Richards ever stop Quetzalcoatlus Black Widow, the deadly assassin of the skies? Beyond the dinosaurs and chaos and two universes merging, this issue also features emotional and heartfelt reunions with some missing members of the Fantastic Four family! So: Dinosaurs and catharsis, together at last. Plus: Sue Storm’s doctorate is finally revealed!
LEGACY #705
Peacemaker Tries Hard! #6
DC Black Label
Script – Kyle Starks
Art – Steve Pugh
Colours – Jordie Bellaire
Buy digitally on Comixology – Peacemaker Tries Hard! #6 (Link)
Peacemaker took on Deathstroke (kinda), Chemo, even the War Wheel, and can now confidently call himself a hero. But with all the death and destruction in his wake, was it all worth it? More importantly, is anyone going to come to his birthday party?
Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons #4
IDW Publishing
Script – Frank Tieri
Art – Inaki Miranda
Buy digitally on Comixology – Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons #4 (Link)
Avast, Mateys! As One-Eyed Henry Hull continues his bizarre tale, Sir Francis Drake and his men find themselves surrounded by monsters, both human and kaiju! While the crew of the Golden Hind have taken terrible losses from giant bats and colossal sea turtles, they’ve yet to face the real dragon. But they might not need to worry about Godzilla if Ebirah slays the King of Monster Island or Drake and his crew first!
G.O.D.S. #1
Marvel Comics
Script – Jonathan Hickman
Art – Valerio Schiti
Colours – Marte Gracia
Letters – Travis Lanham
Buy digitally on Comixology – G.O.D.S. #1 (Link)
JONATHAN HICKMAN RE-INVENTS THE COSMOLOGY OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE! WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE-POWERS-THAT-BE MEET THE-NATURAL-ORDER-OF-THINGS? The infinite détente between THE-NATURAL-ORDER-OF-THINGS and THE-POWERS-THAT-BE nears an end. Old acquaintances are reunited during a Babylon Event. The Lion of Wolves throws the worst parties. Don’t look under the table. There’s a John Wilkes Booth penny on the ground. This ENORMOUS EXTRA-SIZED first issue features DOCTOR STRANGE, who, while not boring at all, is easily the most boring person in the book.
