The Geeky Brummie Pull List with Unstoppable Doom Patrol
I only have 9 new comics for you on the Pull List this week. The Comic of the Week title goes to Unstoppable Doom Patrol from DC Comics. The other 5 comics on the main Pull List come from IDW Publishing, Image Comics and Marvel Comics. Our On The Radar selection includes 3 comics from DC Comics, Marvel Comics and It’s Alive. This week MEANWHILE… ROM returns home.
If you want to send any comics or details of any comic related events we should feature, feel free to reach out to me at keith@geekybrummie.com or comics@geekybrummie.com
Now on with the comics…
Unstoppable Doom Patrol
Issue 3
DC Comics
Script – Dennis Culver
Art – Chris Burnham
Colours – Brian Reber
Letters – Pat Brosseau

THE FAST AND THE NEBULOUS
The Green Lanterns are in hot pursuit of the World’s Strangest Superheroes! When a brand-new metahuman unwittingly becomes a galactic fugitive, Robotman and Negative Man embark on a cross-country road trip to save him! Cliff Steele may be the best driver in the DCU, but can he outrun its best GLs, Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner?! Find out in the story we had to call “The Fast and the Nebulous”!
I’m loving that even in the mainstream DC continuity, this bunch of heroes are still as weird as ever. Crossing over with better known heroes is hopefully going to bring onboard readers who haven’t discovered the merits of the Doom Patrol. So far, this has been a fun ride and it’s great to be back with this family.
Dungeons & Dragons: Saturday Morning Adventures
Issue 3
IDW Publishing
Writer – David M. Booher
Artist – George Kambadais
Buy digitally on Comixology – Dungeons & Dragons: Saturday Morning Adventures #3 (Link)
Stuck in a magically booby-trapped dungeon, Eric and Diana desperately search for a way back to their friends before they become lunch for a Gelatinous Cube. Meanwhile, as Phaelona begins to better understand and control her magical abilities, Hank, Bobby, Sheila, and Presto fall helplessly under her spell. Only Uni seems to be immune. Friends become foes, and now it’s up to Eric, Diana, and Uni to break the spell and save their friends before Phaelona unleashes her full power!
It’s fun to see the characters from the cartoon be integrated with the wider Dungeons & Dragons world. I know there are a lot of fans of the show out there and with the Dungeons & Dragons film proving to be a huge hit, I hope this draws the wider audience it deserves.
What’s The Furthest Place From Here?
Issue 13
Image Comics
Script – Matthew Rosenberg
Art – Tyler Boss
Letters – Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
Buy digitally on Comixology – What’s The Furthest Place From Here? #13 (Link)
Where are Alabama and Lafayette?
Two members of the Academy are trapped in the land of “The Keepers” for their crimes. Life there is brutal, heartbreaking, and short. But tonight, there’s gonna be a jailbreak.
With no further solicitations online at this time, it looks like this is the last issue of WTFPFH? for the foreseeable. Will we be left with a cliffhanger or will everything be wrapped up neatly in a bow? I guess it will be the former and I hope the hiatus is a short one.
The Ambassadors
Issue 5
Image Comics
Script – Mark Millar
Art – Matteo Buffagni
Buy digitally on Comixology – The Ambassadors #5 (Link)
The Ambassadors are special individuals, handpicked from every country for their incredible decency. So why is the Australian Ambassador an old-school, anti-progressive PR nightmare?
The Ambassadors programme hits Australia. Millar is joined on this issue by Matteo Buffagni, who has worked with him before on the Image title Prodigy: The Icarus Society. This book is pulling together an interesting team who have some really interesting origin stories.
The X-Cellent
Issue 3
Marvel Comics
Script – Peter Milligan
Art – Michael Allred
Colours – Laura Allred
Letters – Nate Piekos
Buy digitally on Comixology – The X-Cellent #3 (Link)
UNSOCIAL MEDIA, PART 3
The public is going gaga for the X-Statix! But do their methods for reaching stardom justify the ends? And can Zeitgeist make his way back into the mainstream—or is he totally washed up?
LEGACY #8
This series goes from strength to strength and is everything a diehard X-Statix fan could want. Zeitgeist is a brilliant new foe for the team and I hope there is room on the Marvel schedule for this bunch of misfits for a long time to come.
New Mutants: Lethal Legion
Issue 3
Marvel Comics
Script – Charlie Jane Anders
Art – Enid Balam and Elisabetta D’Amico
Colours – Matt Milla
Letters – Travis Lanham
Buy digitally on Comixology – New Mutants: Lethal Legion #3 (Link)
LIFE, DEATH AND CLOWNING AROUND? Dani Moonstar, Karma and Galura end up tracking the young New Mutants down at Count Nefaria’s mansion, just to enter a scene of pure mayhem. A throwdown between a depowered Gabby and a murderous Count Nefaria, Cerebella trapped inside the Count’s secret vault of treasures and horrors and a drunk Escapade (she’ll never touch grappa again!) going blow for blow against Skullbuster—looks like the supposed “covert” heist has turned into a circus. Meanwhile, Wolfsbane and Morgan’s beastly encounter turns into a moment of discovery.
Plenty to enjoy in this series. Escapade is a great addition to the team and it’s fun having a series that doesn’t spend it’s time bogged down by events happening in a dozen other books. Here’s hoping these mutants survive the fall.
On the radar some other comics not on the Pull List but well worth checking out:
The Sandman Universe: Dead Boy Detectives #6
DC Black Label

Thessaly the witch presents Edwin and Charles with an impossible choice in this series’ thrilling conclusion—what would two dead boys be willing to sacrifice to save themselves from the terrifying unknown, and the very order of magic as they understand it?
Warlock: Rebirth #2
Marvel Comics
Script – Ron Marz
Art – Ron Lim and Don Ho
Romulo Fajardo Jr.
Colours – Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Israel Silva
Letters – Joe Caramagna
Buy digitally on Comixology – Warlock: Rebirth #2 (Link)
Adam Warlock has been stripped of his Infinity Gem! But who is the new bearer calling herself Eve? As Adam falls into a coma, Gamora, Pip and Genis-Vell must seek the help of Doctor Strange!
Roachmill #2
It’s Alive
Script – Tom Mcweeney and Rich Hedden
Art – Tom Mcweeney and Rich Hedden
Buy physically from Forbidden Planet – Roachmill #2 (Link)
IT’S ALIVE! presents the return of this fondly regarded series from the 1980s by Rich Hedden & Tom McWeeney about a mutated exterminator in 30th century New York. Need an exterminator to handle those rats? Pesky roaches ruining your sleep? Maybe Grandma’s getting on your nerves? Call Roachmill Pest Control and we’ll get the job done! The year is 2998 and the pest control industry has changed. Injured and pursued by police, Roachmill realizes he’s been framed, and must clear his name before he becomes just another dead roach. Classic cover by Rich Hedden & Tom McWeeney. Variants by Mark A. Nelson, Niall Orourke, and Gary Fields.
The Spaceknight Cometh
Some rather excellent news broke this week. Fans of the show will know of my love for the Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema comic ROM The Spaceknight. The character was a major part of the Marvel Comic Universe for his 75 issue run, even being partly responsible for making the X-Man Rogue change her ways and fight for good. Now after many years of licensing problems that have kept those incredible comics from being reprinted, Marvel and ROM owners Hasbro, have reached a mutually beneficial deal that allows Marvel to reissue the run in Omnibus form.
Due to arrive in 2024, the first of those Omnibuses, ROM: The Original Years, will reprint issues #1-#29 of ROM The Spaceknight, along with the hard to find Iron Fist and Power Man #73, which has also never been reprinted due to ROM’s appearance. To get the excitement going, Marvel will publish as facsimile edition of ROM The Spaceknight #1 in September.
Here is the full press release from Marvel –
Marvel Comics is thrilled to announce an exciting new collaboration with Hasbro, a global leader in play, that will result in brand-new collections and reprints of Rom’s original comic book adventures!
The popular toy turned comic book superstar headlined his very own solo series throughout the 80s, igniting readers’ imaginations for 75 issues. Set in the main Marvel Comics universe, Rom was a full-fledged Marvel icon who had memorable team-ups with the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men, and even battled bravely against the likes of Galactus and the Skrulls!
These incredible stories by industry legends Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema, along with various Rom guest appearances, will be reprinted for the first time ever in ROM: THE ORIGINAL MARVEL YEARS OMNIBUS VOLUME 1, on sale January 2024. In addition to this long-awaited collection, fans can pick up a facsimile edition of Rom’s comic book debut, 1979’s ROM #1, this September!
ROM: THE ORIGINAL YEARS OMNIBUS VOLUME 1 will collect ROM (1979) #1-29 and POWER MAN AND IRON FIST (1978) #73. He strikes from outer space…and nothing can stop him! Marvel Comics is proud to present the iconic early adventures of the greatest of Spaceknights — Rom! Centuries ago, Rom pledged his life to protect his planet, Galador, from the evil Dire Wraiths. Now, Rom has tracked these vile creatures across the cosmos to Earth, where they have infiltrated the highest levels of power — including S.H.I.E.L.D. itself!
Armed with his energy analyzer, only Rom can see the Wraiths’ true form — and with his neutralizer, he can blast them into Limbo! But what will Earth make of this armored invader? Will Rom’s quest be aided or hindered by encounters with the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Jack of Hearts, Nova, and Power Man and Iron Fist? And when Galactus targets Galador, can Rom and his fellow Spaceknights save their homeworld from destruction?
ROM #1 FACSIMILE EDITION boldly re-presents ROM (1979) #1, one of the all-time great Marvel comic books, in its original form, ads and all! Long ago, Rom offered his life to serve his planet of Galador as a Spaceknight — an armored warrior, sworn to protect his people from the vile alien invaders known as the Dire Wraiths.
Now, his solemn vow brings him to Earth — the latest front in an ancient cosmic conflict! The Wraiths can assume human form, and they’ve been worming their way into our society. Only Rom’s trusty energy analyzer can detect them — and with his powerful neutralizer, he can banish them to Limbo! In this landmark first issue, Rom blasts his way into the Marvel Universe, meets his future ally Brandy Clark and begins his quest to free Earth from the Dire Wraiths’ invisible infiltration!
Experience these beloved and rare stories all over again or for the very first time when ROM #1 FACSIMILE EDITION hits stands in September and when ROM: THE ORIGINAL MARVEL YEARS OMNIBUS arrives next year!
I am super stoked for this release, and I hope it opens the door for ROM to return to the Marvel Comic Universe and perhaps Omnibus editions of The Micronauts too.
