Now on with the comics…
Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives!
Issue 1
Skybound/Image Comics
Script – Dan Watters and Ram V.
Art – Matthew Roberts
Letters – D. C. Hopkins
Colours – Dave Stewart
Buy digitally from Comixology/Kindle – Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives! #1 (Link)
Acclaimed creators DAN WATTERS (HOME SICK PILOTS, Lucifer), RAM V (The Many Deaths of Laila Starr,_ Batman: Detective Comics_), and MATTHEW ROBERTS (MANIFEST DESTINY) rise from the depths for an all-new epic. Years after the events of the original film, journalist Kate Marsden hunts for a notorious serial killer in the heart of the Amazon. Hot on the trail of this madman, she soon encounters an unexpected new threat—but is it friend or foe? Or is it simply…THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON?
This is the second title in the Universal Monsters line, the first being Dracula, which I didn’t pick up. This book though, features one of my favourite movies from Universal’s iconic Golden Age horror films, and this looks to lean into the strengths of a creative team culled from the best examples of modern creator-driven comics. The art looks beautiful and the story should be a great introduction to the world of the Gill-Man. Highly recommended.
Man’s Best
Issue 2
BOOM! Studios
Script – Pornsak Pichetshote
Art – Jesse Lonergan
Letters – Jeff Powell
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Man’s Best #2 (Link)
As the Musketeers explore their newly discovered section of this biome populated by giant robots, it becomes clear that there is more to this civilization of machines than solely logic and steel.
Amidst the sprawling technopolis, when one of the 3 animals disobeys orders, they find themselves captured and helpless, leaving the remaining two on search and rescue duty.
Little do they know that they’re about to discover yet another new world, one that reveals even more about their journey ahead…
The cosmic adventure with furry companions continues, as they navigate the cosmos, uncover secrets, and prove that sometimes, the most extraordinary heroes come in the form of loyal pets. Written by Pornsak Pichetshote, this sci-fi romp brims with heart and stunning artwork by artist Jesse Lonergan.
Dungeons & Dragons: Saturday Morning Adventures
Issue 4 (Vol.2)
IDW Publishing
Script – David M. Booher
Art – George Kambadais
Colours – John-Paul Bove
Letters – Ed Dukeshire
Here there be… Venger?! As the team battles an island beast, Sheila tries to convince Bobby to return to his friends and help Dungeon Master. Little does she know Bobby has other plans. Just as they get the upper hand and find the artifact that might cure Dungeon Master, a tempest rolls in. Venger has arrived… and he wants what the party has. Will Hank, Eric, Presto, Diana, Sheila, Bobby, and Uni finally defeat Venger? Or will this be the end of their adventures? The thrilling conclusion awaits!
Some might find these issue to be a bit slight, but I have found them to be a hugely entertaining slice of nostalgia. Taking the story places the original show had yet to travel, I’m happy to return for more of this Saturday Morning Adventures in the future.
