Dueling demons have become a staple of underground life, while a brutal tragedy’s silver lining might have brought Ellie a golden advantage in the infernal prize fights.
Meanwhile, Ellie and Dora reckon with their own internal demons, and Ellie makes necromantic plans that could spell massive changes for the underworld.
I’ve really been enjoying this series. There is just something about moody British magic users that I adore. Fantastic world building and some career best work from Adlard, make this a series not to be missed.

THE CAPTAIN COMES HOME! And she’s got a whole new mission! With Otherworld settled, Braddock Manor restored, and her brother Captain Avalon at her side, you’d think things look pretty good for Betsy Braddock. Only it turns out, good ole Britain doesn’t want her back. No one wants a mutant menace carrying the shield of Captain Britain, and Betsy’s made more than a few enemies along her way. Quest-less and country-less, Betsy must define a role for herself. A fresh take on a beloved character, don’t miss the latest Tini Howard extravaganza and fan-favorite artist Vasco Georgiev’s Marvel debut!
Talking of British characters I adore, Captain Britain is back, in a self titled series. I hope this one goes deep in to the back history of the character and the mythos surrounding them.

Battle Action Returns
After a hugely successful return as a hardback special last year, Battle Action is set to return as a 5 issue miniseries later in 2023. Writer Garth Ennis as drafted in some excellent talent to make this a special event for British comics. Here is the official blurb…
We’re proud to announce that following the huge success of 2022’s Battle Action special, bestselling writer Garth Ennis returns to once again reintroduce and reinvigorate the legendary British comics combo in a new series.
He is joined by some of the greatest talents in comics – including John Wagner (Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog), Dan Abnett (Guardians of the Galaxy, Warhammer 40k), Torunn Grønbekk (Thor, Punisher: War Journal), Rob Williams (Suicide Squad, Judge Dredd), John Higgins (Watchmen, Judge Dredd) and Chris Burnham (Batman Incorporated, Unstoppable Doom Patrol) – to bring new life to even more characters from the pages of Battle Picture Weekly and Action!
Launching 31 May in 2000 AD-size magazine format, and available through comic book stores and the 2000 AD and Treasury of British Comics webshops, the new five-issue miniseries will feature the return of fan favourite World War Two flying ace ‘Johnny Red’ as well as the return of Battle Picture Weekly’s co-creator John Wagner to ‘HMS Nightshade’, the series he co-created with artist Mike Western in 1979, which tells the story of a Royal Navy warship protecting Allied shipping from the U-Boat menace.
Wrapped in stunning covers by award-winning artist Keith Burns, each 32-page issue will feature two incredible stories of daring, courage, and action, such as ‘Crazy Keller’, ‘D-Day Dawson’, ‘Dredger’, ‘Major Eazy’, ‘Hellman of Hammer Force’, and ‘Nina Patrova and The Angels of Death’.
Garth Ennis said: “So it looks like my cunning plan worked, and there will indeed be more Battle Action. I’m delighted to welcome writers Rob Williams, Torunn Grønbekk, Dan Abnett and in particular original Battle creator John Wagner on board for the new series, alongside ten (count them) fantastic artists – some returning from last year’s special, some newcomers to our noble endeavour. Having John produce the first ‘HMS Nightshade’ script in forty years is the icing on the cake.”
Editor Oliver Pickles said: “The Battle Action special last year was a huge success for us, so it’s a delight to be able to return to these classic titles. We have a really first class line-up of creators who don’t just understand the legacy of these characters but how to bring them forward in new and exciting ways.”
Battle Picture Weekly was where the revolution in British comics began. Created in 1975 by writers and editors Pat Mills and John Wagner, it introduced new grittiness into comics with its cast of anti-heroes and misfits. Its bombast and energy sparked a sea-change in what comics could do, leading to Mills’ creation of the controversial Action and the globally influential 2000 AD.
The new Battle Action mini-series celebrates the merging of this landmark title with its controversial stablemate, Action, a combination that took the two comics to even greater heights. Now, more than forty years after the original, some of the cream of British comics talent are bringing these classic characters back to life.
Battle Action #1 is out on 31 May from comic book stores and will be available for stores to order through Diamond Distribution’s Previews magazine. It will also be available in print and digital from the 2000 AD and Treasury of British Comics webshops and digitally through the 2000 AD app.

Time Bomb Goes Quantum
In more good news for British Comics, Time Bomb Comics this week announced a return to newsagents across the UK with the new title Quantum. As a kid of the 70s, grabbing the latest issue of my favourite British comics, was the highlight of the week, and it’s great to see Time Bomb doing something so amazing. There books are always exceptional so readers are in for a treat. Here is the official blurb…
Time Bomb Comics is proud to announce Quantum, a new, physical comic magazine which will be available in newsagents across the UK and select international retailers, in a bold new step to reach a new audience.
Following on from the success of Time Bomb’s 2022 Gerry Anderson Spectrum anthology, Quantum will be available bi-monthly in WH Smith’s, alongside independent newsagents. The title will also be available internationally, with distribution already secured in Germany, Sweden, Australia and the United States.
Quantum #1 will contain five stories, and begin four ongoing serials, each one set in a world alternate to our own. Full details of the stories themselves and the creators involved will be revealed soon. Time Bomb also plan to feature original articles about British indie comics.
Time Bomb Comics chief, Steve Tanner, spoke about his hopes for the new comic and for the decision to make Quantum a title mainly available through the distribution channels that were once traditionally used to reach comics readers but which most comics publishers now avoid:
“I think the response to Spectrum being on sale in WHSmith’s made us realise that there’s a whole readership out there that don’t buy comics online, at conventions or even comic shops. Quantum is what we’ve produced for those readers, but we’re hoping that a lot of our existing readers will come along for the ride – via their newsagent, of course!”
Quantum importantly also marks a new stage in Time Bomb’s story, with Steve stating, that Quantum is, “a first step; some of the things we have planned long-term as part of the Quantum project are things that genuinely haven’t been done before. Not just by an indie UK comics publisher. Not by any comics publisher. Ever.”
Quantum will be available in retail newsagents and select comic shops in late April and will have new issues available every 2 months.
Expect Quantum to hit newsagent shelves in April, we’re looking forward to it.
