Now on with the comics…
Dead Eyes: The Empty Frames #3
Image Comics
By Gerry Duggan, John McCrea, Mike Spicer and Joe Sabino
Buy digitally – Dead Eyes: The Empty Frames #3 (Link)
Dead Eyes caused a mob funeral so he could gain access to a mafia stronghold. When he arrives he only finds that it’s empty-ish. What ensues is the funniest, most violent and effed-up fight since Dead Eyes’ brawl in a hospital MRI suite with laughing gas. This one has it all. Punching, kicking, biting, vomiting, shooting, losing, winning, and of course… the half billion in stolen art. How’s Dead Eyes gonna get out of this one?
Duggan, McCrea, Spicer and Sabino continue to impress with their irreverent humour and intense action. This issue is packed with punches, kicks, biting, vomiting, shooting, and a half-billion dollars in stolen art at stake. John’s art is incredibly dynamic and perfectly complements the chaotic tone of the story.
Moon Dogs #1
Image Comics
By Tananarive Due, Kelsey Ramsay, José Villarrubia and Jeff Powell
Buy digitally – Moon Dogs #1 (Link)
Literary horror icon and multi-award-winning novelist TANANARIVE DUE (THE REFORMATORY) and hot newcomer KELSEY RAMSAY present MOON DOGS — following East African werewolves secretly living in Miami, as this minority within a minority is caught in a burgeoning war that threatens both lycanthrope and human lives.
I know nothing about the whole Horizon Experiment but I love a good werewolf tale so this is a must-read for fans of horror and werewolf comics. It looks to be a fresh take on the genre, offering both a compelling story and breathtaking visuals.
Star Trek #26
IDW Publishing
By Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, Angel Hernandez, Lee Loughridge and Clayton Cowles
Buy digitally – Star Trek #26 (Link)
In its escape from the Delta Quadrant, the U.S.S. Theseus has landed in an unknown sector of space that appears safer — if not a hundred years younger — than their own. There, the crew receive a signal from an oncoming ship: the U.S.S. Enterprise. Captain James T. Kirk is hailing. The two crews join together in the race against Lore’s wave of destruction, convinced there must be some countermeasure that will save their universes from complete annihilation. But will their combined bravery and brainpower be enough? Or is it already too late for both their timelines?
In the same week as we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Star Trek: Generations, Captain James T. Kirk’s arrival in this book adds a nostalgic touch, as the crews of the Enterprise and the Theseus combine their bravery and brainpower to find a countermeasure that could save their universes from annihilation. The stakes are high, and the tension is palpable as they work against the clock to prevent complete destruction.
Flash Gordon #4
Mad Cave Studios
By Jeremy Adams, Will Conrad, Lee Loughridge and Taylor Esposito
Buy digitally – Flash Gordon #4 (Link)https://amzn.to/48ZjrkO
The escape! Flash Gordon, Ming, and Daranek battle their way through Planet Death. Each fallen enemy brings them one step closer to their goal: a ride off this dismal world. The thrilling fourth issue in the hit ongoing series!
This issue follows our heroes as they fight their way through hordes of enemies, each fallen foe bringing them one step closer to their goal: escaping this dismal world. Packed with action and adventure, this book is sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats.
The Question: All Along The Watchtower #1
DC Comics
By Alex Segura, Cian Tormey, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Willie Schubert
Buy digitally – The Question: All Along the Watchtower #1 (Link)
Who watches the Watchtower? In the wake of Absolute Power, the Justice League Unlimited has created a haven for all heroes — but can they keep it secure? Enter Renee Montoya, reeling from an abrupt end to her time in Gotham and looking for a place to hang her hat. But the Trinity didn’t bring her up to the Watchtower to relax — there’s a dark threat bubbling underneath the surface, and only the Question and her ad hoc support team stand a chance of figuring out who the problem is before it’s too late.
I’m a big fan of The Question, and this issue marks the beginning of an exciting new mini-series from DC Comics, from by Segura and Tormey. It’s nice to see Renee Montoya back as The Question, as she takes on a new role as the sheriff of the Justice League Watchtower.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Naruto #1
IDW Publishing
By Caleb Goellner, Hendry Prasetya, Raúl Angulo and Ed Dukeshire
Buy digitally – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Naruto #1 (Link)
It’s the coolest ninja matchup you could have ever dreamed of, had you dared! The Heroes in a Half-Shell meet the host of the Nine-Tailed Fox in the crossover everyone will be talking about.
When teenage reporter April O’Neil has a clandestine meeting with Tsunade, the leader of the Hidden Leaf Village, it garners the attention of Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, and Kakashi. They aren’t the only ones who are wondering what the two women were discussing, though. The sinister Foot Clan have their own interest in April’s visit, as they think she might hold the valuable information on mutation research being conducted by the scientist Baxter Stockman. With April caught between the forces of the Hidden Leaf Village and the Foot Clan, it can’t be long before the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles show up to lend her a hand!
Working with acclaimed manga publisher Viz Entertainment, IDW is pulling together two of the most popular comics in the world to bring you the four-issue comic book event of 2024!
Now this is what you call a crossover event, and one that fans have been eagerly anticipating, and it delivers on all fronts. This issue brings together the two beloved franchises in a fun and energetic way and it sets the stage for an exciting series ahead.
The Pedestrian #4
Magma Comix
By Joey Esposito, Sean Von Gorman, Josh Jensen and Shawn Lee
Buy from Forbidden Planet – The Pedestrian #4 (Link)
A city on the brink of succumbing to the insidious forces of the Klutch! A hushed hero standing tall in the face of evil! Regular people drawn together by a desire to help each other and their town! Is this the beginning of the end… or just the end of the beginning?! Don’t miss the exciting conclusion of the Pedestrian’s first adventure! Writer Joey Esposito (Batman: Urban Legends) reunites with Pawn Shop collaborator, artist Sean Von Gorman (Ghost Planet), for an offbeat tale that will stick with you!
This is the thrilling conclusion to the first arc of this innovative series. It’s a perfect blend of humour, action, and meaningful storytelling that will leave a lasting impression, and hopefully it won’t be long before we get adventures from my kind of hero.
Each week we’ll be selecting one unmissable trade paperback, that absolutely must be in your collection.
Nemesis The Warlock Definitive Edition Vol.2
2000AD/Rebellion
By Pat Mills, Kevin O’Neill, Bryan Talbot and Steve Potter
Buy digitally – Nemesis The Warlock Definitive Edition Vol.2 (Link)
The Definitive series of the Nemesis the Warlock saga continues as Torquemada’s crusade to destroy all alien life reaches the planet of the Goths, a species of alien which has modelled their culture on early twentieth-century Britain. Nemesis must team up with the Goth leader, the Ion Duke, to stop them being eradicated by Torquemada’s army of Terminators.
Collecting the entire series in order, with the colour centre-spread pages reproduced in their original form, the Definitive collection of Nemesis the Warlock is the ultimate way to read one of the most important sci-fi sagas published in the pages of 2000 AD.
Written by Pat Mills (Marshal Law) and drawn by Kevin O’Neill (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) and Bryan Talbot (Sandman, The Adventures of Luther Arkwright), this definitive series is a collection of the complete storyline in order.
This one came out a while ago, but I wanted to remind people just how wonderful this series is. The paperback version is lovely to look at, but if you can, grab the hardcover edition for an extra bit of decadence, that I’m sure Torquemada would disapprove of it. The transition from Kevin O’Neill to Bryan Talbot in this collection adds another level of gothic beauty to a series what was already one of the most visually interesting stories in 2000AD. I already own these stories in other formats, but this release, especially the hardcover, really make this the definitive edition of one of the greatest strips to emerge from the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic.
