I have a wallet busting 15 comics in the Pull List for you this week. Our Comic of the Week is Flash Gordon from Mad Cave Studios. The other comics on the main pull list come from IDW Publishing, BOOM! Studios, Image Comics, DC Comics and DC Comics Black Label. Our On The Radar selection includes 6 new comics from Image Comics, Dark Horse Comics and IDW Publishing. In MEANWHILE... Rebellion’s first Kickstarter, Roxy, goes live.
If you want to send any comics or details of any comic related events we should feature, feel free to reach out to me at keith@geekybrummie.com or comics@geekybrummie.com
Now on with the comics…
Flash Gordon
Issue 1
Mad Cave Studios
Script – Jeremy Adams
Art – Will Conrad
Colours – Lee Loughridge
Letters – Taylor Esposito
Buy digitally from Comixology/Kindle – Flash Gordon #1 (Link)
Flash awakes on a secret prison planet somewhere in the galaxy. Upon learning that Dale Arden is the subject of an assassination plot, he’s forced to break out and make his way across the galaxy to save her. Along the way, he encounters old friends, new threats, and a greater mystery surrounding WHO is pulling the strings of this universe. The first exciting issue in an all-new ongoing series!
Mad Cave have been doing a great job reviving some of my favourite characters. Ahead of the return of The Defenders of the Earth, we get this Flash Gordon solo series. The FCBD issue was a lot of fun and the ongoing series promises some exciting adventures for our hero, who is celebrating his 90th Anniversary this year. Well worth checking out if you are a Flash Gordon or King Features fan.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Issue 1
IDW Publishing
Script – Jason Aaron
Art – Joëlle Jones
Colours – Ronda Pattison
Letters – Shawn Lee
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 (Link)
NEW SERIES PREMIERE! NEW JUMPING-ON POINT!
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have all left New York to pursue their own interests, but there are forces gathering that will pull them back together—whether the bad guys like it or not. First up: Raphael! But why is everyone’s favorite brawler in prison?! When a surprise attack behind bars puts Raph’s position in jeopardy, he needs to figure out how to get out of jail and warn his brothers that trouble is coming.
Superstar writer Jason Aaron (The Mighty Thor, Batman: Off-World) teams up with Joëlle Jones(Lady Killer, Catwoman) for the first issue of a new TMNT series that will start a bold new era, celebrating the TMNT’s 40th anniversary while setting them up for the next 40 years to come!
The Turtles return with a new Issue 1 and a new creative team as IDW relaunch the title. The previous 150 issue run impressed a lot of fans and IDW kick off this new series with some incredible creative talent on board. I’m looking forward to seeing where they take the turtles over the next few months.
Universal Monsters: Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives!
Issue 4
Image Comics/Skybound
Script – Dan Watters and Ram V.
Art – Matthew Roberts
Colours – Dave Stewart
MINISERIES FINALE
It all ends here. Who will survive the final showdown with the Creature?
This has been an excellent sequel to the original movie and really cemented the quality of the Image Universal Monsters line. We reach the end of our time with the Gill-Man, but I hope we get more stories further down the line, but next we have Frankenstein.
Void Rivals
Issue 11
Image Comics/Skybound
Script – Robert Kirkman
Art – Lorenzo De Felici
Colours – Patricio Delpeche
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Void Rivals #11 (Link)
War in the wasteland. Zertonian forces have caught up to Darak and Solila, but thankfully, they have a little Cybertronian help! Springer to the rescue!
The cover gives away the Triple Changer who is helping out Darak and Solila this issue, as the series makes a firmer connection to the Transformers and the wider Energon Universe. I’ve really been enjoying this series and I hope it keeps up the quality we’ve been treated to here.
Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers II
Issue 4
IDW Publishing/BOOM! Studios
Script – Cullen Bunn
Art – Baldemar Rivas
Colours – Andrew Dalhouse
Letters – Johanna Nattalie
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers II #4 (Link)
With the help of some of the greatest giant monsters in history, the Kaiju Power Rangers areborn! New powers! New weapons! New Zords! The next evolution of Mighty Morphin PowerRangers—and the next mutation of Godzilla’s friends and foes—is upon us! And if you miss thisbook, you’re missing history in the making!
I absolutely love these crossover books. This has been a hugely satisfying follow-up to the original run and with only one issue left to go in this mini-series, I hope it’s not long before we see these characters meeting again.
Zatanna: Bring Down the House
Issue 2
DC Black Label
Script – Mariko Tamaki
Art – Javier Rodríguez
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Zatanna: Bring Down the House #2 (Link)
MARIKO TAMAKI AND JAVIER RODRÍGUEZ BRING ZATANNA TO DC BLACK LABEL! Magician on trial! Despite Zatanna’s willful determination to avoid Real Magic at all costs, a terrifying showdown with the interdimensional demon that interrupted her stage show reveals that she might not have run as far from the world of sorcery as she once hoped. Now a mysterious group of magic casters emerges from the shadows to accuse her of wielding great and terrible power against one of their own — her late father and greatest shame, Giovanni Zatara!
Just fantastic. This is a beautiful book, that really does some interesting things with our Mistress of Magic. Zatanna is a hugely underrated character and whilst this exists outside the regular DC continuity, I recommend you pick it up.
Star Trek: Defiant
Issue 17
IDW Publishing
Script – Christopher Cantwell
Art – Angel Unzueta
Colours – Marissa Louise
Letters – Clayton Cowles
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Star Trek Defiant #17 (Link)
Enter a brand-new arc and the beginning of a new era for the disavowed- mercenary crew of the U.S.S. Defiant!Political corruption ensues as Sela and her father- General Revo- leverage the imprisoned Defiant crewmates to kidnap the Romulan praetor and chairman of Tal Shiar Intelligence to advance their sinister plot to take over Romulus…
A new story arc kicks off this issue and if you thought the last one was epic, you haven’t seen nothing yet. The whole IDW Star Trek line has been nothing short of perfection and any self respecting fan of Star Trek should be reading these incredible books.
Batman: Dark Age
Issue 4
DC Comics
Script – Mark Russell
Art – Michael Allred
Colours – Laura Allred
Letters – Dave Sharpe
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Batman: Dark Age #4 (Link)
MARK RUSSELL AND MIKE ALLRED TAKE ON THE DARK KNIGHT LIKE ONLY THEY CAN! Batman’s world begins to grow as the people of Gotham realize they only need a costume to justify their problematic behavior. Fortunately, with Robin at his side and an empowered populace, Batman begins to turn the tide in his war against crime. But he isn’t the only one preparing an army — Falcone is readying his own recruits to take the battle to new lows. Will a figure from Bruce’s past play a key role in the battle to come?
Russell and the Allred’s are bringing us one of the best Batman stories in years. It looks beautiful and the alternate history of Bruce and his friends really does chime with modern times. I hope DC see fit to keep these creators together to bring us stories featuring other members of the original JLA.
Power Girl
Issue 11
DC Comics
Script – Leah Williams
Art – Adriana Melo
Colours – Romulo Fajardo Jr
Letters – Becca Carey
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Power Girl #11 (Link)
CAN PAIGE GET HER GROOVE BACK? Forever alone?! Dating is hard, especially if you’re Metropolis’s breakout hero Power Girl. Will an innocent date with the mysterious Axel be just what Paige needs to get her groove back? Or are there some skeletons in her suitor’s closet waiting to be set free?
This is such a fun book and if you’re not picking it up, you’re missing out of one of the most delightful books DC are putting out right now.
On the Radar, these are comics I’ve not got on my physical Pull List, but are books I’ll pick up digitally or in trades:
