Now on with the comics…
Guardians of the Galaxy
Issue 2
Marvel Comics
Script – Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly
Art – Kev Walker
Colours – Matt Hollingsworth
Letters – Cory Petit
Buy digitally on Comixology – Guardians of the Galaxy #2 (Link)
The Guardians are caught in the middle of a civil war! Will the Guardians be able to stop it, or was it already lost from the start? Grootfall is coming, and it does not take sides…!
LEGACY #182
The first issue took the COTW title last time around, and after a barnstorming opening and Kev Walker art I couldn’t not award it the coveted title again this month. I’m loving the space western vibes with a hint of cosmic horror. This is great stuff and anyone coming to the book on the heels of the latest movie should find something exciting and fun.
Planet of the Apes
Issue 2
Marvel Comics
Script – David F. Walker
Art – Dave Wachter
Colours – Bryan Valenza
Letters – Joe Caramagna
Buy digitally on Comixology – Planet of the Apes #2 (Link)
THE CRIME OF TIME AND HUMANITY’S HUBRIS! Humanity slips ever closer to the brink of extinction as the Army of Man continues to target apes in a misguided attempt to end the spread of the ALZ-113 retrovirus. With groups of apes in Europe, Africa and Asia continuing to grow in intelligence and power, the threat of simian domination of Earth becomes increasingly possible. Meanwhile, the United Nations makes a bold move to the save the human race.
This does a great job of fitting in with the more recent interpretations of POTA and the art is spectacular. The viral outbreak themes seem even more scary after the events of the last few years. The is a solid book that you should definitely check out.
She-Hulk
Issue 13
Marvel Comics
Script – Rainbow Rowell
Art – Joe Quinones and Andrés Genolet
Colours – Bryan Valenza and Dee Cunniffe
Letters – Joe Caramagna
Buy digitally on Comixology – She-Hulk #13 (Link)
She-Hulk’s new villain makes a big move that throws Jen for the loop of her life. Plus, Patsy Walker, also known as Hellcat, returns to help Jen set everything straight.
LEGACY #176
Come on. This book is just a breath of fresh air and is both humorous and heartbreaking when it wants to be. It’s great to see Jen in such a way and to have a comic that doesn’t have to deal with universe threatening events. Sometimes the personal stuff is what makes these stories soar.
Star Trek
Issue 8
IDW Publishing
Script – Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly
Art – Mike Feehan
Buy digitally on Comixology – Star Trek #8 (Link)
The newly established Obsidian Council of Cardassia Prime has spoken: The time has come for Benjamin Sisko to stand trial for the atrocities he ordered and for his contributions to war crimes by the Federation during the Dominion War. Arc two of the critically acclaimed Star Trek flagship comic series continues here!
I’m really enjoying these IDW Trek books. The characterisations are spot on and the the art does a great job of capturing the look and feel of the shows. This second story arc looks to be going to some very interesting places and I recommend this book to any Star Trek fan.
X-Men
Issue 22
Marvel Comics
Script – Gerry Duggan
Art – Joshua Cassara
Colours – Marte Gracia
Letters – Clayton Cowles
Buy digitally on Comixology – X-Men #22 (Link)
ORCHIS RISING! Mutantkind may be stronger than ever, but that just makes their enemies more determined than ever to tear them down. Orchis’ plans are in motion, preparing for the fall…
Having polished off the Brood, the X-Men must now face M.O.D.O.K and pals. No rest for the wicked.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Echoes
Issue 1
IDW Publishing
Script – Marc Guggenheim
Art – Oleg Chudakov
Buy digitally on Comixology – Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Echoes #1 (Link)
When a space anomaly thrusts a bounty hunter and her target-a criminal mastermind-into their universe, it’s up to Kirk and his crew to stop them from unintentionally starting a war with the Romulans and unleashing a superweapon of foreign tech onto the system. But the strangers from another universe are more familiar than they assume for underneath their helmets are their doppelgangers from an alternate reality!
After Star Trek: Year Five finished I said I’d like to see IDW explore the Motion Picture era. Now here we are with the first issue of this mini-series doing exactly that. I hope that this isn’t the only exploration of that time we’ll get as I do have a fondness for this point in Star Trek history.
On the radar some other comics not on the Pull List but well worth checking out:
