Now on with the comics…

Gatchaman: Ryu Scavengers #1
Mad Cave Studios
By Steve Orlando, Riccardo Robaldo, Rebecca Nalty and Frank Cvetkovic
Buy digitally – Gatchaman: Ryu Scavengers #1 (Link)
When modernized scavenger pirates—the ruthless Sea Vultures—launch a surprise attack on his harbor, Ryu, the steadfast pilot of the Science Ninja Team, steps out of the cockpit and into the spotlight! Determined to protect his community and prove he’s more than just a pilot, Ryu embarks on a high-stakes oceanic adventure, piloting his amphibious tank to outwit the pirates and uncover the mystery behind their deadly ship. The tides turn in this explosive solo mission of courage, ingenuity, and redemption on the high seas!
Another week, another Gatchaman comic takes my Comic of the Week top spot. This time it’s another of the excellent series of one-shots that focus in on one member of the team. This time it’s the turn of the often overlooked pilot of the God Phoenix, Ryu. I’ve been loving these stories that give us a much more in depth look at the members of the Science Ninja Team and this promises to be one of the best yet.

Masters of the Universe / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles of Grayskull #4
Dark Horse Comics
By Tim Seeley, Freddie E. Williams II, Andrew Dalhouse and AndWorld Design
Buy digitally – Masters of the Universe / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles of Grayskull #4 (Link)
THE MASTERMIND IS REVEALED! In the wild conclusion to this wicked series, we discover who has been tying the threads of the He-Man and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universes together. He-Man and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles find themselves facing-off against unthinkable mutations and chaos — but this time there’s no reboots, no safety net, and no rules! Can our teenaged heroes prevail?
This has been an absolute blast, and boy, can that Freddie E. Williams II draw a wonderful He-Man. I’m a huge fan of this insane crossover books featuring the Turtles and this has been one of the best. Dark Horse should quickly do a sequel with the same creative team.

Universal Monsters: The Mummy #2
Image Comics/Skybound
By Faith Erin Hicks, Lee Loughridge and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
Buy digitally – Universal Monsters: The Mummy #2 (Link)
Ten years later, Helen Grosvenor surprisingly reconnects with her past at Cairo’s most famed museum. But nothing can prepare Helen for the truth as she’s confronted by an unexpected arrival who may be friend, foe… or something else entirely!
Another hot for Image’s Universal Monsters series of books. The choice of creative teams on each book has been inspired, and Faith Erin Hicks is doing some career best work here. Can a crossover book be far away?

Star Trek #31
IDW Publishing
By Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, Davide Tinto, Lee Loughridge and Clayton Cowles
Buy digitally – Star Trek #31 (Link)
Friends and foes clash when Worf and his mind-twisted crew on the U.S.S. Enterprise come into contact with Sisko, Kahless II, and Beverly aboard the U.S.S. Phoenix in Alpha Quadrant space. Nothing in Lore’s universe is clear — but when Sisko sees his old friend on the viewscreen, he knows what he must do: wake Worf the hell up!
Lore War continues to be a fantastic event. It is beginning to look like Lore War is bringing this run of Trek books to a conclusion in the coming months, and it certainly looks like it will be going out with a bang.

Each week we’ll be selecting one unmissable trade paperback, that absolutely must be in your collection.

Spector: Incorruptible TP
Rebellion/2000AD
By John Wagner, Dan Cornwell, Carlos Ezquerra, Jim Campbell, Dylan Teague and Tom Frame
Buy from 2000AD Webshop – Spector: Incorruptible TP (Link)
Just a few years into our future, faced with unsustainable levels of corruption within the branches of city government, and a police force that is equally rotten, Spector is created. A robot detective, untainted by corruption and beyond bribery, Spector is charged with cleaning up the city. But it is an uphill battle, as many people currently in positions of power want the robot to fail.
Written by John Wagner (A History of Violence), this standalone graphic novel represents the final work of Carlos Ezquerra (Judge Dredd), with Dan Cornwell (Rok of the Reds) completing the story.
Serialised in the Judge Dredd Megazine in 2023/24, now is your change to grab the collection of the final work of the maestro that is Carlos Ezquerra. The first twenty pages of this collection are pencilled by Ezquerra, before Dan Cornwell steps in to fill some pretty big boots. And to his credit Dan does a magnificent job. This brilliant series has a sharp political edge and is a fitting way to pay tribute to one of the Progs original legends.
