Helen of Wyndhorn
Issue 1
Dark Horse Comics
Script – Tom King
Art – Bilquis Evely
Colours – Mat Lopes
Letters – Clayton Cowles
Buy digitally from Comixology/Kindle – Helen of Wyndhorn #1 (Link)
From the Eisner award-winning and bestselling creative team of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comes this Gothic sword and sorcery epic that’s Conan the Barbarian meets The Wizard of Oz. Following the tragic death of her late father C.K. Cole, the esteemed pulp writer and creator of the popular warrior character Othan; Helen Cole is called back to her Grandfather’s enormous and elustrious estate: Wyndhorn House. Scarred by Cole’s untimely passing and lost in a new, strange world, Helen wreaks drunken havoc upon her arrival; however, her chaotic ways begin to soften as she discovers a lifetime of secrets hiding within the myriad rooms and hallways of the expansive manor. For outside its walls, within the woods, dwell the legendary adventures that once were locked away within her father’s stories.
The award winning team behind the excellent Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow are back with this series that looks to be a captivating blend of Conan the Barbarian and The Wizard of Oz. Whllst I’m a big fan of Tom King’s writing, it’s Bilquis Evely’s beautiful artwork that I’m most looking forward to. More so, that in Supergirl, her art looks to beautifully capture the gothic feel of the series with intricate details and expressive character designs.
The story promises a mix of adventure, magic, and hidden truths, making it a must for fans of classic fantasy. I can’t wait to explore the depths of Wyndhorn House alongside Helen.
Transformers
Issue 6
Skybound/Image Comics
Script and Art – Daniel Warren Johnson
Colours – Mike Spicer
Letters – Rus Wooton
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Transformers #6 (Link)
END OF STORY ARC! ONE WILL STAND, ONE WILL FALL. The Autobots vs. The Decepticons. This is it. And someone isn’t going to survive.
The last issue of the current arc, only just loses out on a sixth successive COTW title. DWJ wraps up his time a writer and artist with another issue filled with dynamic artwork capturing the mechanical warfare in vivid detail, each panel crackling with energy. Mike Spicer and Rus Wooton take it all to another level with complimentary colours and letters.
As the dust settles on this arc, the repercussions of this battle will echo through future issues, with DWJ setting the stage for a expansive saga for our favourite robots in disguise.
Adventureman: Ghost Lights
Issue 2
Image Comics
Script – Matt Fraction
Art – Terry Dodson and Rachel Dodson
Letters – Clayton Cowles
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Adventureman: Ghost Lights #2 (Link)
MINI-SERIES FINALE
Claire Connell, the new avatar of pulp hero Adventureman, faces down the deadly Ghost Gang with the supernatural aid of old friends wearing new guises – at stake hangs the make-up of reality itself!
This all to short adventure wraps up this issue, but it promises to be an action-packed finale what will hopefully leave us eagerly awaiting the next chapter in Claire’s tenure as Adventureman.
The Immortal Thor
Issue 8
Marvel Comics
Script – Al Ewing
Art – Martín Cóccolo
Colours – Matt Wilson
Letters – Joe Sabino
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – The Immortal Thor #8 (Link)
A GOD ENSNARED! Thor confronted his mother Gaea about her machinations in Midgard…and the dark secrets she had kept from him. Meanwhile, a trap was prepared—baited with blood vengeance, laced with insidious poison and carefully set by she who perhaps cared for the Odinson best. This is the story of the IMMORTAL THOR…and of the women who loved him.
LEGACY #769
Al Ewing continues to weave a captivating narrative, and the art by Cóccolo and Wilson really brings the mythic worlds of the God of Thunder to life. What secrets are waiting to be revealed and how will this change the Mother and Sons relationship?
Dead X-Men
Issue 3
Marvel Comics
Script – Steve Foxe
Art – Bernard Chang, Javier Pina, Lynne Yoshii and David Baldeón
Colours – Frank Martin
Letters – Cory Petit
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Dead X-Men #3 (Link)
FAR, FARAWAY! Rachel Summers recruited the Dead X-Men for a seemingly impossible mission…and now they’re about to discover the REAL reason behind their task. As the walls of reality start to bend, will anyone survive the revelation?!
This series features a whole bunch of my favourite mutants, so I’m willing to look past the slightly overused multiverse/coffin dodging storyline. I hope that they can really pull this all together, and it has some impact on the unfolding Rise/Fall story happening elsewhere.
Fall of the House of X
Issue 3
Marvel Comics
Script – Gerry Duggan
Art – Lucas Werneck
Colours – Bryan Valenza
Letters – Clayton Cowles
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Fall of the House of X #3 (Link)
THE END HAS TRULY BEGUN! The X-Men have taken all they’re willing to take from Orchis… Now it’s time for them to do the dishing out. Unfortunately, just when it seems like one threat is over…another rises to take its place. The final battle of the Krakoan age rages as two series that are one move toward a crash that will echo across the universe…
This series is doing a fine job of wrapping up the Krakoa Era, and hopefully it won’t run out of steam before the world changes for the X-Men forever. I hope they find an interesting way to move in to the next era and it’s not just a reset of the story from before Hickman launched this tale all those years ago.
The Amazing Spider-Man
Issue 45
Marvel Comics
Script – Zeb Wells
Art – Carmen Carnero
Colours – Marcio Menyz
Letters – Joe Caramagna
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – The Amazing Spider-Man #45 (Link)
The Gang War is over, but New York City will bear the scars for a long time. While Peter was fighting the war, other parts of his life kept going on and the consequences will be felt here. Plus…what mystery is bubbling up at Ravencroft?
LEGACY #939
Gang War might be over by Spidey won’t get a chance to rest. New artist Carmen Carnero steps in for the next couple of issues.
On the Radar, these are comics I’ve not got on my physical Pull List, but are books I’ll pick up digitally or in trades:
