The GB Pull List – S.W.O.R.D. 9th December 2020

The Geeky Brummie Pull List with S.W.O.R.D.

A another fairly quiet week for comics this week. Today sees the release of the first issue of a new S.W.O.R.D. series from Marvel. This week also sees the release of the penultimate issue of The Rise of Ultraman and final issue of Bill and Ted Are Doomed.

In Meanwhile… we take a look at some more comic related news stories.

Now on with the comics…

Title: S.W.O.R.D.

Issue: 1

Publisher: Marvel Comics

Written by Al Ewing : Art by Valerio Schiti : Cover by Valerio Schiti

Genres: Superhero/Sci-Fi

From the Publisher:

ONE GIANT LEAP FOR MUTANTKIND! The Mutant nation of Krakoa has quickly become a major force on the world stage…but why stop there? Krakoa has relaunched the Sentient World Observation & Response Directorate—a fully independent organization dealing with all things extra-terrestrial on behalf of all of Earth. Al Ewing (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY) and Valerio Schiti (EMPYRE) bring us the tale of Mutantkind looking to do for the galaxy what Krakoa did for the planet.

A new S.W.O.R.D. series written by Al Ewing – yes please! Al is on a roll at Marvel right now so I’m very excited to have him in the driving seat for this series. Spinning out of the X-Books this series brings back Abigail Brand who is joined this time by a team of mutants to project the Earth from space borne threats. I’ve enjoyed previous series featuring the Sentient World Observation & Response Directorate, but they never tend to last long. Hopefully this one will be around for a while.

Title: The Rise of Ultraman

Issue: 4

Publisher: Marvel Comics

Written by Mat Groom & Kyle Higgins : Art by Francesco Manna : Cover by Jorge Molina
Genres: Action/Adventure/Superhero

From the Publisher:

Overrun by Kaiju and pinned behind enemy lines, Kiki could really use the help of the newly merged Ultraman — but what went wrong with the merging process, and how will that impact our hero? With that to deal with, Shin must also decide whom to trust — the benevolent-seeming but deeply secretive USP or the bitter whistleblower Dr. Yamamoto… And a wrong choice could cost him everything he holds dear!

This series has been a lot of fun and taps into the appeal of Ultraman. With one issue left in the series it’ll be interesting to see how everything is wrapped up.

Title: Bill and Ted Are Doomed

Issue: 4

Publisher: Dark Horse Comics

Written by Evan Dorkin : Art by Roger Langridge
Genres: Comedy/Fantasy/Movies & TV

From the Publisher:

The official prequel series to the new film! The evil metal band Vile Empire unleashes a horde of chaotic trolls to destroy Bill and Ted, while back in San Dimas, the Stations and robots form a plan to try to save their friends. But can help arrive in time to save our most harried heroes, not to mention our totally excellent universe?
This is the end of this bodacious mini-series. It’s been excellent to have Dorkin back guiding Bill and Ted through the dangers of rock. Sometimes you just want a comic to make you smile and this is a comic that achieves that easily.

It’s Karmen, baby!

Image Comics is bringing the fantasy Karmen by writer and artist Guillem March to english reader this March. First published by Dupuis in Belgium as a graphic novel, Karmen will be translated and introduced to english speaking audiences in five issues.

Karmen is a provocative story that explores grief, suicide, and redemption told as a visual feast-for-the-eyes and featuring ethereal, fantastic artwork to set the tone.

Punctuated with humor, Karmen is the story of Catalina, a recent suicide, who is taken under the wing of the strange and quirky angel, Karmen, on a journey of discovery and reflection.

Catalina’s story is packed with surprises and metaphysics, tenderness and humor. It dives deep into the topics that matter and is brought beautifully to life by the creator behind the acclaimed Monika (Titan Comics) and The Dream (Europe Comics).
