The Geeky Brummie Pull List with Beta Ray Bill
Welcome to the Geeky Brummie Pull List. This week three titles make up the list. I also have five more great comic books worth checking out in On The Radar – so do give them a try.
In Meanwhile… this week we take a look at some of the best panels from the recent WonderCon@Home event.
Now on with the comics…
Title: Beta Ray Bill
Issue: 1
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Written by Daniel Warren Johnson : Art by Daniel Warren Johnson : Cover by Daniel Warren Johnson
Genres: Fantasy/Superhero/Action/Adventure
From the Publisher:
FROM THE PAGES OF DONNY CATES’ THOR AND SPINNING OUT OF THE EVENTS OF KING IN BLACK! The second-most famous wielder of Mjolnir. The right-hand man to the god of Thunder. And now, a warrior without his best weapon. Beta Ray Bill is tired of playing second fiddle to Thor – and with Bill’s famous hammer, Stormbreaker, recently destroyed at the new All-Father’s hands, tensions are higher than ever. The Korbinite must strike out in search of a new weapon…and a new destiny. Assuming he can first defeat a Knullified Fin Fang Foom! Writer/artist Daniel Warren Johnson (Extremity, Murder Falcon) and colorist Mike Spicer take Beta Ray Bill on a journey beyond the shadow of a god! Plus: This oversize first issue contains an exclusive conversation between Johnson and Beta Ray Bill’s creator, the legendary Walter Simonson!.
I’ve been a big fan of Beta Ray Bill since he first appeared during the Walt Simonson run on Thor back in the early 80s. He’s been a fairly regular player in the Marvel Universe since then including a stint with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Now he’s back with Daniel Warren Johnson providing start and art and it look fantastic. This five issue mini series will hopefully lead to a more regular role for Beta Ray with the Marvel Universe. I’m particularly interested in the interview between the two creators that is included in this issue which should be a fascinating read.
Title: Strange Adventures
Issue: 9
Publisher: DC Black Label
Written by Tom King : Art by Mitch Gerads & Evan ‘Doc’ Shaner
Genres: Superhero/Action/Adventure
From the Publisher:
The Pykkts are attacking Earth. As the only warrior in all the cosmos to ever defeat them, Adam Strange leads the planet’s mightiest heroes in all-out war! The only thing is, evidence is mounting that Adam’s victory on Rann may not have been everything he says it was. There is time unaccounted for, circumstances left unexplained. Even Batman has started to wonder about his friend. Sure, they are fighting side by side right now, but who will answer for all the things that got them here? Why, Alanna Strange, of course! It’s time for the Rannian princess to go out and set the record straight. The hit series continues on a bimonthly schedule.
I’m sure this book is not keeping to a monthly schedule as the wait between issues seems to get longer and longer. I’m enjoying this as much as I did Mister Miracle and we are now in the home straight as things are looking to get even more complicated for Adam. If you’ve not been picking tis up in singles it’s probably a little late to up on board now but I highly recommended you grab the trade when it is available.
Title: X-Men
Issue: 19
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Written by Jonathan Hickman : Art by Mahmud A. Asrar : Cover by Leinil Francis Yu
Genres: Superhero/Action/Adventure
From the Publisher:
ESCAPE FROM THE VAULT!
Just look at that synopsis. Marvel really don’t like to give things away when it comes to the X-books. Never more than two pages of preview art either. After leaving us hanging for over a year and setting things up last issue we get to find out more about what’s been happening to X-23/Wolverine, Synch and Darwin. I hope that nothing terrible will happen to them as I’m looking forward to seeing them feature more prominently in the ongoing titles. We’ve been without Laura for far too long.
