I’ve got some great comic for you on the Pull List this week. Our Comic of the Week is Defenders of the Earth from Mad Cave Studios. The other comics on the main pull list come from Image Comics and Marvel Comics. Our On The Radar selection includes 5 new comics from Marvel Comics, Dynamite, Vault Comics and IDW Publishing. And MEANWHILE... takes a breather.
If you want to send any comics or details of any comic related events we should feature, feel free to reach out to me at keith@geekybrummie.com or comics@geekybrummie.com
Now on with the comics…
Defenders of the Earth
Issue 1
Mad Cave Studios
Script – Dan DiDio
Art – Jim Calafiore
Colours – Juancho!
Letters – Carlos M.Mangual
Buy digitally from Comixology/Kindle – Defenders of the Earth #1 (Link)
Flash Gordon, The Phantom, Mandrake the Magician and Lothar are united again in this reimagining of the classic animated series, Defenders of the Earth. Picking up with characters and storylines from the original series, Flash confronts Ming in a final battle, only to find that even greater threats await him as his teammates as they each must confront ghosts of their past to protect their families and future. The first action-packed issue in an eight-part series!
Mad Cave Studios follow up their nostalgia filled Gatchaman books with their reimagining of the Defenders of the Earth cartoon series. This issue will reintroduce readers to iconic characters like Flash Gordon, The Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, and Lothar, while injecting their world with a contemporary edge. The art looks to be a visual treat, capturing the essence of the original animated series while adding some modern flair. If this is as good as the aforementioned Gatchaman books this should be an absolute treat.
Transformers
Issue 11
Image Comics/Skybound
Script – Daniel Warren Johnson
Art – Jorge Corona
Colours – Mike Spicer
Letters – Rus Wooton
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Transformers #11 (Link)
Only Optimus Prime can save Earth and Cybertron.
But will all of the Autobots stand with him?
Daniel Warren Johnson and Jorge Corona continue to deliver a thrilling and visually stunning Transformers saga with each new issue. The art continues to be nothing short of spectacular, with dynamic panels that capture the sheer scale and power of these iconic characters, while the colours by Mike Spicer enhance the intensity of every page.
Ultraman X Avengers
Issue 1
Marvel Comics
Script – Kyle Higgins and Mat Groom
Art – Francesco Manna
Colours – Matt Milla
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – Ultraman X Avengers #1 (Link)
THE GREATEST HERO OF JAPAN AND EARTH’S MIGHTIEST HEROES JOIN FORCES FOR AN EPIC ADVENTURE! Spider-Man has disappeared from New York, an intergalactic invader has arrived on Ultraman’s doorstep and the Kaiju of Earth are acting even more mysteriously than usual. This can only mean one thing: It’s time for Ultraman to meet the Avengers! But what cosmic threat is great enough to require a team-up of Marvel’s mightiest champions and Japan’s greatest hero? Find out as Shin meets Sam, Spacium Ray meets Repulsor Ray and “THWIP!” meets “SHUWATCH!” — in the epic crossover event: ULTRAMAN x AVENGERS!
I’ve enjoyed the previous Marvel Ultraman runs, but now Ultraman and the Avengers finally unite to face a cosmic threat of unimaginable power. We’ll get to witness the clash of titanic forces as the Spacium Ray meets the Repulsor Ray. This is a crossover event that promises to be huge.
X-Men
Issue 2
DC Comics
Script – Jed MacKay
Art – Ryan Stegman and J. P. Mayer
Colours – Marte Gracia and Fer Sifuentes-Sujo
Letters – Clayton Cowles
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – X-Men #2 (Link)
INVASION! The X-Men fly to the rescue of a mutant in crisis in San Francisco. The problem? Alien invaders seem to have a similar idea. Six X-Men vs. an invading alien fleet? Sounds about right. PLUS: THE CONCLUSION OF DEADPOOL/WOLVERINE: WEAPON X-TRACTION!
LEGACY #302
The X-Men’s return set up some interesting story threads which look to be left dangling as the team tackle a new alien threat.
The Sensational She-Hulk
Issue 10
Marvel Comics
Script – Rainbow Rowell
Art – Andrés Genolet
Colours – Dee Cunniffe
Letters – Joe Caramanga
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – The Sensational She-Hulk #10 (Link)
What is the fate of SHE-HULK and JACK OF HEARTS?! Their love has blossomed over the last two years of this She-Hulk story, but this issue will define it for the future!
LEGACY #188
Well, this is just heartbreaking. This issue brings Rainbow Rowell and Andrés Genolet’s sensational series to a close. This run has perfectly balanced humour, heart, and action, delivering the series that Jennifer Walters deserved. The relationship between Jen and Jack of Hearts has been the beating heart of the series and it’s disappointing to see this comic come to an end. This is a book that will be cherished by She-Hulk fans for years to come.
The Immortal Thor
Issue 14
Marvel Comics
Script – Al Ewing
Art – Jan Bazaldua
Colours – Matt Hollingsworth
Letters – Joe Sabino
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – The Immortal Thor #14 (Link)
ALL-FATHER VERSUS SKYFATHER IN A 775th ISSUE CLASH OF TITANS! Thor and Hercules were trapped in a realm of endless night… where Nyx and her children were at their full power. But there was a greater danger caged in this dark realm — Zeus, King of the Greek Gods! And when twin thunders met, could either survive? This is the story of the IMMORTAL THOR… and the second test of three.
LEGACY #775
Having faced Hercules last issue, Thor must now face his father Zeus, in what promises to be a colossal showdown. Al and his team are blast running the gamut of Marvel’s mythology and it’s great fun being along for the ride.
The Amazing Spider-Man
Issue 55
DC Comics
Script – Zeb Wells
Art – Emilio Laiso
Colours – Bryan Valenza
Letters – Joe Caramagna
Buy digitally on Comixology/Kindle – The Amazing Spider-Man #55 (Link)
The last arc nearly killed Spider-Man (others weren’t so lucky). Peter hopes to take a breath but gets a new challenge to face in this, the 949th legacy issue of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN! This is the last domino to fall as we head into our next big centennial!
LEGACY #949
So the last issue wasn’t quite The End, as we reach a transitional issue that serves as a bridge between the previous arc and the next big story that ties up Spidey’s issues with Tombstone..
On the Radar, these are comics I’ve not got on my physical Pull List, but are books I’ll pick up digitally or in trades:
Fantastic Four #23

Art – Carlos Gómez
Colours – Jesus Aburtov

The Fantastic Four will need teamwork, cleverness and an old vehicle dug out of storage to save the world… plus some super-science! And that’s before the aliens show up! Johnny Storm gets in over his head in this Johnny-narrated issue!
LEGACY #716

POLYBAGGED FOR YOUR PROTECTION!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Nightwatcher #1

Art – Fero Peniche
Colours – Luis Antonio Delgado

After making a dark debut in the Free Comic Book Day special, fans have one burning question: Who is the Nightwatcher?
